Are fruitcakes running rampant on eBay lately? Selling, buying, listing, feedback, etc...

Okay here's one I can't figure out:

I contacted a guy on CL two weeks ago.  He had listed a bunch of Rebels sets, NIB, and below RRP.  Including a Ghost for $50.  The Ghost I was picking up for investment purposes, but the other sets that he had (AT-DP, TIE Advanced) were for my personal collection.

He tells me he only has the Ghost left.  I agree to meet him.  When he shows up, I've got my family, he's got his (wife, two kids).  We quickly exchange.  He asks who the Lego fan is, and I say, "we all are, but I'm also a reseller.  This is going into the resell pile because we've already built it.  If you've got more that you're trying to get rid of, let me know, I'm buying."

No word out of him since.

Fine, whatever.  Wife tells me he probably thinks I'm reseller scum.  Whatever.

Over the last week, he's been listing like crazy on CL.  But everything he lists is crazy cheap.  Friends Lighthouse for $30 (RRP $40). Star Wars ISD $90 (RRP $130).

I bought from him originally because it seemed like he had one of each set, and I thought he was just liquidating stuff he bought and couldn't return.  Now I'm thinking 5-finger discount, since he's listed multiples of some of these sets.

Any I nuts?  What am I missing?

Seen and experienced this before. Five finger discount.

Sad, he brings his kids with him to sell stolen merchandise.

Sounds like 5 finger discount to me.  Why wouldn't he sell to now though?  Sounds like he wants to get rid of the sets so why does it matter that you are a reseller?  That shouldn't matter to him if he is selling a bunch of sets and wants to get rid of them for quick cash.  Have you hit him up again to ask about other sets?

interesting note about ebay feedback: i know a lot of people have complained about the lack of positive feedback left for sellers on ebay. Well recently i sold some old coins on ebay for a friend and of the 6 coins i sold, 3 buyers left me feedback. compared to my last 15 lego sales on which only 1 buyer left feedback.

just some food for thought i guess.

Had you communicated with any of them? I think people tend to leave feedback if you've had an exchange.

Coins are a much more mature market than LEGO in every sense of the word.

nope, no more communication than usual. maybe the rate of scams for coins is higher than for other items, so the buyers were just extra thankful about not getting schemed. or maybe coin collectors are more active ebay members, as opposed to lego buyers who may be purchasing a set as a one time thing for a birthday or holiday.

Nice.... so I just recently sold a $1000 Lego set on eBay and shipped it insured with signature confirmation of course. It was attempted to be delivered but the buyer wasn't available/home on the 21st. So today I get this message from the buyer:

"Hi, I am actually travelling outside the U.S. And will be back in April. Please have the no signature required as that's what I usually do..they can leave it outside as my doorman then stores it inside my storage. Really sorry for the inconvenience."

Yeah right! I don't know if this is a scam or he really thinks that's okay for such a high value item.

I would never send a high value set without insurance no matter what. But I don't believe his story anyway.

I wish you luck with this.

No kidding. I definitely insured it. But it's USPS so god knows if that actually means anything lol. I told him to reschedule the delivery for a date his doorman can accept the package since he said "doorman isn't there on weekends" and USPS attempted on a Saturday. Hopefully it works out. I just hope eBay has my back on this one if s*** hits the fan, especially if I get negative feedback over this.

More issues in last week then all of holiday season.

Of last 10 sales, 6 haven't paid (most are auctions, I usually do immediate payment with buy it now). And I have my first return that the guy is keeping, he said I gave partial refund and case is closed. Yes, I made mistake offering partial refund before I got it. Figured all messages there ebay has my back. We will see, it's only $10 and the other guy has feedback of 800 so he knows the game more than me and is trying to take advantage of the situation

I got a great message on eBay this morning.  I'm selling a polybag that hasn't been generally available, but is something that I purchased at Legoland.  The sender wants to know where I bought it, asking, "can you tell me where you found this item? I have some concerns about its validity as it is unreleased."

Umm...no.  I'm not telling you my source.  And yes, it is valid.  I'm not answering this guy.

I sold sealed CMF sets and was asked frequently how I knew the contents of the packages without opening them.  My answers were along the line of "if you just buy the complete set I am selling, you would not have to worry about that" :D :D :D

Yep.  Hey, I'm bummed that there are Joker Bumper Cars on eBay, and I don't have them.  But I know at least one BP'er found them out in the wild.  So, it happens.  Some of us are luckier than others. LOL
