jaisonline Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 This thread will be like my previous builds (links below).Intro : While waiting for the missing 10173 elements to arrive, i decided to build 10125. It was recently picked up on eBay for $109 shipped (used, no box). The $179.99 set was introduced in May 2012 and consists of 2,127 elements including a R2D2 minifig that was recently refreshed. The elements are in 15 bags. For more pictures of the box, please refer to this review found on eurobricks.http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=69410Like other builds, I'll will walk through the building process, take pics, discuss various topics like elements used / how, and provide a recap.Bricklink's element inventory of this set is ...http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=10225-1The 4 reddish brown "Hose, Flexible 12L with Tabbed Dark Bluish Gray Ends" elements are exclusive to this set and can cause some difficulty in bricklinking this set (usually costs about $2.50 -$4.. The UCS sticker sells for about $10. For more details about harder to obtain elements, refer to Grolim 's review. Here is the Lego Designer video of this set. jaisonline Posted July 18, 2014 Author Posted July 18, 2014 I started with R2's dome. 50 steps. This so actually the last section to build when following the 3 manuals. Pictures were taken about every 10th step. Final picture of the complete dome / head I might eventually order 1x1 flat plates and slope elements to smooth out the head some. At some angles, it kinda resembles the late 2000s VW Beetle set. Sent from an iPhone using the Brickpicker app 1 Quote
biniou Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 I might eventually order 1x1 flat plates and slope elements to smooth out the head some. I would really like to see that. I hate that R2D2 head full of acne... 2 Quote

DoNotInsertIntoMouth Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Man I may need to switch my build order for my sets. I really want to build this one. Quote
jaisonline Posted July 20, 2014 Author Posted July 20, 2014 Still going out of order to keep this build interesting. I'm only building it currently since I purchased it "pre-owned" without being "certified". Ha Here we have the middle leg. There are 23 sub-steps within 2 steps. This will ultimately attach the upper inside part of the dome head and allow 360 degree turning. Sent from an iPhone using the Brickpicker app Quote
@rtisan Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 This is a great set, wonderful display. Only thing is I kind of wish it was a bit bigger, even 3-4 inches more, even though it`s on the small side this makes a fantastic set. Quote
Grolim Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 R2 has been one of my favorite builds. Not as big as some of the other large UCS sets, but the design and intricacy of some of the parts was great. The whole unit is very solid, with a lot of internal structure so that's where a lot of the part count goes. Loved mine so much I got the light kit for it: 2 Quote
wooble Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Where do you get the light kit from? Are their instructions for this on the net? I did the build for the 3rd leg wrong and it was a pain to fix. Its a really hard set to pull apart to make adjustments. Quote
jaisonline Posted July 21, 2014 Author Posted July 21, 2014 Decided to resume building from the beginning. Here is the lower portion of the body. 30 steps with many sub-steps. Completed lower portion. Sent from an iPhone using the Brickpicker app Quote

The interior is so... multicolored. Almost makes me dislike the set because of it. Still, it's a good think those pieces are pretty common so I can satisfy my OCD. Quote

Still, it's a good think those pieces are pretty common so I can satisfy my OCD. I had the same reaction when I was building the set last year. I thought the set would be mostly white, blue and gray, with some black thrown in there, but Lego has to add some yellow, green, red, and I think some orange too. Quote

It was too much white (sorta like building larger mostly gray SW sets). Instead of saying "red rum, red rum", i was walking around the house crying "white need rum, white need rum". Quote
Pseudoty Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I liked this part of the build all of the colors none of which are visible in the finished product. Once the technic rods are added it makes for a solid core and gives good weight to the set. Quote
biniou Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I was getting ready to ask the same thing. What's the significance of the different colors, if there is any? I think it's to help the assembly with the instructions, these seem to be hidden bricks so it's quite smart IMO. Quote
Silburned Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I was getting ready to ask the same thing. What's the significance of the different colors, if there is any? Since these colors aren't visible in the end, I think Lego does this to help with the building. It's much easier/ quicker to see where parts go if different colors are breaking it up. Quote

jaisonline Posted July 21, 2014 Author Posted July 21, 2014 The Power Function battery and 2-3 light kits would also work. There are only 5 - 6 areas on the head that will allow light to pass. Not sure if the option above is better. I will try the Power Function option after my 10225 build is complete. The PF items are cheap so I picked up a few.
