Rankings are certainly a great way to gauge demand for a set, particularly the smaller ones with less AFOL/VP office focus. The only problem is LEGO has started paying more attention to these as well....

Traditionally LEGO has put stuff on sale to clear stock. However there is no reason they can not get smart and start to play the number game. IE sell the train a discount (not even a loss leader for them), and hook other sales like castles. Keep in mind 20% is really the new RRP. Or is this giving LEGO retail too much credit?

Its all relative to buy in. The Blue one was available a few times for around 50% off, and is currently selling for over 50% markup on amazon. Pretty good return. If you bought closer to 30% and are only selling on ebay then its pretty bad. this new one also has the added unknown of the new drive system. not tuned into the train crowd so I dont know how its being viewed.
