  2. Interesting. That was really the only thing I could think of was the term was used when they were children and now that they are adults they want to be identified differently. Why can't we just refer to people as people instead of constantly trying to put everyone into buckets? *sigh*

  4. English is my second language. Colleagues come to me to help phrase and spell-check their communications - I seem to be the only one who can put a proper English sentence together and not confuse their, there, they're, it's, its and the aforementioned loose and lose.

  6. I work with parents and school-age children and I can assure you the preferred term is "special needs". It is impossible to take the full spectrum of "special needs / disabled" into account in a simple post but "special needs" (needing a non-traditional method of learning / performing a task) is VERY different than "disabled" (limited or unable to learn / perform a task). It makes sense why parents prefer one over the other. Doesn't make any sense to me why those terms would suddenly get reversed.

  7. And here I thought the more inclusive term is "differently abled". On a serious note, you may want to save a physical copy of whatever HR guide you signed. You never know when HR decide to change the preferred pronoun from "they" to "your excellency" or preferred term from "women" to "womxn". At least when you are singled out for offending someone, you have a physical proof of what the expected norm was as of the signed date.

  10. side note on topic; the preferred pronoun thing is really messing in terms of grammar. I just had to sit thru sexual harassments training for corporate (I work for fortune 500 so we get all of the latest corporate punishments lawyers cook up)...and it's been drawn out to over an hour now because of all the many new ways to offend coworkers. the thing about transgender person preferring to be referred to as "They" for a singular person; grammar-wise is messy...is it a big deal; nope. Also when did the term "Special needs" become offensive? I didn't know the preferred term is "disabled".

  12. they can magnify the BEST and WORSE of us Yup, clowned for my "cheap shoes" every day by these two kids just before 5th period (which always ruined my lunch dreading it) Coming from an immigrant household where parents worked 13 hours/day 7 days a week...my shoe choices were limited to Payless Shoe Source (pre-dates Ross/Marshalls/TJ Maxx options we have today)...looking back I am glad I was raised well enough NOT to ask my parents for more expensive shoes...and to the parents of Tony Grassis and Richard Harden...F you for the crappy values you taught your kids)

  13. I would be offended if everyone thought me or my son was a Patriot's fan. At age 3 my son started in a public school program being speech delayed w/ a nonclinical diagnosis of being within the spectrum for autism. Truly a great program that we were fortunate to be in...I know of a family that actually sold their home and re-located just to be in this program. I've been told that they get experts from other countries (UK most recently) just to observe and learn from this program. Anyway, that said...there is definitely a stigma associated w/ any such programs which, unfortunately starts from other parent's narrow perceptions and gets passed on to their kids.

  14. Same for people using loose for lose. Drives me nuts!

  15. This. AFAIK, in schools, "special needs" is an umbrella term to identify kids who need non-traditional learning methods. Perhaps some kids need a lot more attention due to ADD and on the other hand some kids need a separate advanced math class to keep them learning. Both would fall under "special needs".

  19. Why are the terms "sell" and "sale" or "resell" and "resale" confusing to people? Facebook marketplace is full of: "Baseball cards for sell" "I'm saleing (not even a real word) this for my parents" "Amazon overstock for resell"

  23. Hi Margo, You will probably want to inventory the sets by set# first; Microsoft Excel works the best sine it's a common file type anyone can work w/. But if you're short on time; the most efficient way is to line up a bunch of a the manuals and take a few pictures. Post the pics here and you will likely get offers. The fact you found yourself here suggests that you are informed and expecting something close to market prices. Bricklink.com is a one-stop LEGO and pricing guide which gives some idea. BL also has weights for sets so that's a general way to check for level of completeness if you were so inclined without spending too much time. Folks into this era LEGO are probably decent...but you know what the say about "den of thieves". I don't have a horse in this as I don't consider LEGO sets before I was born to even exist.

  25. Hi Margo, and welcome. Do you have any never opened Lego Samsonite sets mostly sold via the Sears and JC Penny catalog in the USA from the early 70’s? I am always looking to add good specimens to my collection. If so please message me with pics. They look like this (that is me and my sister in the pic)

  30. So I was sweating the FedEx signature required for UCS SD delivery. The updates kept pushing the delivery date out by day pretty much since it left Romeoville...towards the end it said Delivery Tuesday; but on Saturday (3 days before) I see the "sorry we missed you " sticker on the front gate (WTF!). So I am mulling over my options and FedEx sends another update: will try again Tuesday. Monday (day before) we see a giant box left on the porch. "Signature required" my ass!
