Got my stuff! Like Christmas in June, and my wife has a hard time believing - "No way you won all those Legos, and all Star Wars". One of the box is squashed on one side, but completely my fault of leaving it in super humid NY outdoor for more than 1 day and having cat litter delivery sitting on top of it4 points

I kinda miss the sound a typewriter makes, and the ding when you go to the next line. Does anyone know how do people type mathematical symbols? I'm pretty sure I've seen a summation sign in old textbooks before.2 points

LEGO Walkman, too. @TheOrcKing I think we have an idea for a new photo thread - Obsolete Tech I agree! It does look a lot better. This is definitely one of those times where they took the Idea, and improved the looks of it to make it a far better product. Me too. I took a semester long typing class in high school, on a manual typewriter. I think I ended the class with a 45 WPM score. Now I type something like 130 WPM? Something insane like that. But obviously not on a manual typewriter, lol.2 points

I'm old enough I typed reports on these in Elementary School and actually had to share time on manual typewriters in Typing Class in High School. This set definitely looks neat.2 points

Y'all need to chill a bit. The FBI couldn't break Apple's encryption on the San Bernardo terrorist shooter's Iphones and had to use an outside firm to finally crack it . . . 6 years later! https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/04/14/azimuth-san-bernardino-apple-iphone-fbi/ Simply put, there's no way they cracked the encryption and this NPR article lays out the three likely scenarios with this caveat: According the article, the most likely situation was one of the hackers agreed to work with the FBI for a fee. This would explain the quick turn around.2 points

They used Colonial as a honeypot and traced the payment. They were partially successful in grabbing some of the coins and getting physical ownership information on the wallet they were in. So nothing about backdoors, really just luring and catching in the act.2 points

I still think a fleet of predator drones armed w/ fire retardant "bombs" is our best hope on the West Coast to address wildfires can access entire west coast states, get to a target within 10-20 minutes; eradicate threat1 point

That was a great scene... right until Scottie started typing 200 wpm. The first time I saw this movie I asked, how in the world does he know how to type like that?1 point

The usual suspects have equipment. Plus Sideline Swap. A lot of rinks out here do "learn to play" programs, where they will provide the equipment at no-cost for 6-8 weeks, so kids can figure out if they enjoy the sport. My son tried roller hockey, but it just wasn't as exciting to him as being on the ice *shrug*. You may want to reach out to USA Roller Hockey, the governing body for the sport to see if there are any programs in the area, or how they might help set one up. One of their core missions is to grow the sport, so hopefully they're in a position to help.1 point

That happened to me two summers ago. We were really lucky, tho. That particular summer, there were only 4 days were I ran it (that's how I knew it was going out). That was right before the R32 mandatory change in California, too. I chose not to do anything to fix it, putting off the issue until last year. When I started considering replacing the AC last year, it was right as COVID hit in March. So companies had laid people off, and were running specials. I managed to get a great deal (relatively speaking for California, more on that in a sec). At the time, I helped get a couple guys back to work, got it installed with little wait (also because it was spring not summer yet). Overall, everyone was happy. As for the great deal - my cousin-in-law has an HVAC business in Michigan. He died when I told him how much it cost to get an AC installed out here. Triple what he charges in Michigan (but he charges far more for a heater there, than they do out here)1 point

Youtube as a learning tool. Baseball has NOT been a primary sport for me growing up so I went on YT to bone up on proper throwing and hitting fundamentals as I am helping my kid and his friend prepare for baseball camp. And as always; everything I thought I knew is wrong. depending on the channel, the instructors do a great job of the WHAT and WHY. For those baseball fans out there; is it a new thing that in hitting, back elbow UP is WRONG? Suppose to be down by ribs.1 point

Same here. Does everyone know the history of why the typewriter keys are laid out in the weird arrangement? The original typewriter was laid out with ABCDE... all in order. It had to be changed to what we have today in order to slow down those who could type so fast they would jam the typewriter. Personally I thought it was fun to jam a manual typewriter, unless I had a paper I needed to get done for school. It was like a reverse break the ice game to pull each striker back until they all came apart. Of course, it was annoying to get the ink off your fingers afterwards. Once computers caught on they tried changing the the English keyboard back to ABCDE... but so many people were used to the typewriter configuration it was rejected. A LEGO real-to-real could be easy to motorize and with a smart phone, have it play music like the LEGO piano.1 point

Looks nicer than the original design (for once). This could start a new series on obsolete tech. 8 track player, slide projector, fax machine, and outhouse all have potential.1 point

Tbh I never understood how secure crypto is, I mean there have been many reports of significant loss due to hackers. Iirc Mt gox loss was in the hundreds of millions and that was many years ago which is probably worth billions now. Anyways I'm expecting at some point crypto will get clamped down whilst various governments back their own digital currency....1 point

Your Bitcoin is not safe. Feds have a backdoor and I'm guessing always have. Stolen bitcoin is hard to get back, but the FBI says it just did it (msn.com) Officials said they looked at bitcoin transaction records and identified a bitcoin wallet used to hold the digital currency and were able to seize it under court order. The FBI had obtained the private encryption key, similar to a password, used to transfer funds out of the digital wallet, officials said.1 point

Margins are tight. The best I can say is price out the missing pieces and don't forget to figure shipping into your cost. See what your break even price is and see if you can beat it. I admit, I seriously debated about piecing out my 10030 lot (especially since it was the old light and dark gray,) after realizing what the large wheels, trans-blue dishes, and shield generator bases were selling for. But I enjoyed putting the set together and in the end did make about $100 profit even after the new SD was announced. BTW, just for selling comparison of your 10129: https://www.ebay.com/itm/164840572039?hash=item2661438487:g:4LMAAOSwyfRghKvo1 point

When I picked up a used 10030 ISD, it was in similar shape. All the important stuff was there, maybe $20-$30 worth of BL parts needed, but no plaque sticker. I ended up ordering a new sticker from a guy in Australia on eBay, and was sure to note that it was not an original sticker in the listing. Sold without issue. I guess I'd figure out whether it's worth your time, effort, and money to complete it vs the potential selling price of individual expensive pieces vs "as is" condition.1 point

It was so dry here in SoCal last week, that last Friday, we had three separate small brush fires start from the tiniest of sparks, all within an hour of one another, all within 5 minutes of my house/each other. I am definitely concerned.0 points

Speaking from personal experience, that tree is a goner. Best case scenario it will fall down to the other side since it is way too heavy with the trunks & branches. Might as well pay someone to remove the whole thing. I would love some rain since my HVAC unit is toast and new one is not going to be installed until tomorrow0 points
