  1. If you - any person - have a 3000$ mortgage then you have a really high income and logic stipulates you would have some money saved in the bank . As far as the first part goes , if left unchecked the virus can affect up to 80% of the population to which humans have no immunity against . Even at 1% mortality that’s a lot of humans dead . Is it a bit over the top ? Maybe . Is it worth the effort to save lives ? Absolutely !

  2. I think we all understand the flattening of the curve and are willing to sacrifice to help with that. The problem I see is how long do you wait and destroy the economy and people's lives to flatten the curve, especially if you don't see millions dying from this like some people predict. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

  3. The people who are going to die haven't died yet, you can't just do a quick math based on those numbers, also, the hospitals aren't yet overrun as they are in northern Italy. THAT is why we are doing what we are doing. More people can survive this with better care, that's what "flatten the curve" is all about. Decrease the rate at which the hospital ICUs fill up. If it's successful, people will claim the virus was not that bad and we've all stayed home for nothing. It's not intuitive, it takes a bit of thinking to understand. It's not because the mortality rate isn't THAT bad, it's a combination of a high number of asymptomatic carriers, a long incubation time, a high transmission rate, PLUS a very high mortality rate for certain populations, this is not like the flu, it's a novel virus, no one in the world has antibodies against it, it has also mutated already at least once. I know it goes against every capitalist bone in your body, but maybe put some human lives ahead of the almighty dollar for a bit, and if all goes well, maybe we'll overhaul the whole apparatus and we can all be better for it in the future.

  4. Nah, a personal attack would have went something like this: That random county may have a “Super Spreader” not like your first girlfriend in high school, but I think you married your high school sweetheart so didn’t go there On a separate note perhaps if the US government went with the conspiracy theory that this is a man made Bio-weapon we would get better buy in from the general public. I think if people thought this was a Bio weapon out of some movie or a video game they would be scared and wouldn’t leave Home but little do they realize that Nature makes the best weapons of all just ask a dinosaur.

  5. That is just a nature of governments. Their actions tend to be draconian one way or the other since they have to enact "one size fits all" policies. On the other hand, most of US population are just dumb and or ignorant. Something has to be catastrophic or drastic to get their attention. Even then, we have those spring breakers filling up the beaches in FL and those dumb kids licking toilets. One thing to criticize was the campaign to mock the effectiveness of masks. Masks are not for the protection of the wearers but to protect everyone else. Since CDC botched the test kits, everyone should have been asked to wear a mask, because we could not know who was infected. Masks would have limited the spread of not just Covid but also flu. Especially since there was an outbreak of Influenza B around January. That was just logical. I would have rather seen people walking around in masks and gloves than being cooped up at home. Quarantine should have been last measure But again, most people are dumb. Now I have to begrudgingly agree with the government's decision to have everyone stay at home <end rant>

  10. I seem to get lucky and stumble upon a nice local bulk lot every now and then. The last one I bought had a few unopened sets mixed in. This was one of them. I sold my Gunship on eBay a couple weeks ago. $460 shipped. Any guess on who my buyer was........?? Toycentric. He must have sold his phantom stock on Amazon for $525-$550ish and he hired me to fulfill his order. Fingers crossed his buyer doesn’t pull a fast one on him, because then it will come back on me. He’s bought from me a couple of dozen times over the past couple of years with no issues, so I’m not terribly concerned. As soon as he gives me one sniff of trouble though he’s getting blocked.

  13. I'm not a math guy. I majored in microbiology in college. I would tell you without early testing and large amounts of testing in general, we will have a difficult time figuring out where we are in relation to the curve and severity of this disease. Given some time though and much more testing, smarter people than me can figure out where we are.

This thread seems to represent two camps: those that watch what was happening in CHina in January ...eating popcorn and complaining about supply chain issues and those that saw China and worried about how much worse it would be here currently we have that 1st camp that's watching whats happening in Italy...eating popcorn and complaining about shelter-inplace

  17. That is not how you calculate the fatality rate since you do not get this and instantly die. The deaths we are seeing today are from people who were infected 2 weeks ago so you have to divide buy that case number. The issue we are seeing with New York is that 18% of the confirmed cases require hospitalization and the healthcare system will be overwhelmed as healthcare workers get infected and PPE supplies are exhausted. Once this occurs then many other people with many other medical issues will not be able to get treatment. Elective surgeries, PT/OT, Chemo and many other areas are already being canceled or decreased.

  18. As Dr. Fauci predicted weeks ago, the current mortality rate is around 1% here in the USA. The rate of the seasonal flu is .1%. That’s a 10x increase. Please do not take this pandemic lightly. If you listen to one person about this whole situation, listen to Dr. Fauci. His opinion is non-bias and he is not afraid to tell the truth.

  19. And what will the body count be if this thing infects millions? Tens of millions? What will be the economic cost of that? We are doing exactly what was done with the Spanish flu of 1919, which killed more people than WW1. That’s how we would have handled this 50,60 years ago

  24. well Gallileo was under house arrest till he died...so you're in good company...of sorts. The best team is someone that has key information with a marketing guy... like in Stranger Things...the paranoid conspiracy guy told the young couple that is didn't matter they were right about monsters taking over their town...the general public cannot accept such information...if the goal is to evacuate; change the message into the government is hiding secret testing that is releasing toxic gas...keep the goal in mind and not trying to "be right"

  27. I’m kinda hurt that I got blacklisted and mocked for saying that without testing we would know nothing and be screwed later. I guess the difference is I said it weeks ago when it would have made a difference and yes I said the people in charge were the ones to blame for not getting testing out sooner, which everyone is also saying now. Anyway I guess being right at the wrong time is the same as being wrong.

  28. emphasizes the need for more efficient and available testing the reality is...money matters and abled bodied folks WILL go back to work...that list from SF of essential business leaves enough latitude for pretty much ANY business to claim "essential". SO how to beat the spread of the virus with THIS reality? every bright mind needs to be working on testing options because folks that KNOW they have it will stay home (hopefully), but pretty much anyone who thinks they MAY have it will go back to work because that's simply not enough reason to not work.

  29. I think the sentiment is shifting from..."people needs things to do to overcome boredom", to "prices for all non-essentials are going to tank as this economy tanks"...hoarders will start fire sales soon....and 50% off will be the new 20% off for toys at retailers.

  30. You can use this site to drill down to county just tap on the state in the list not the map for details. Depending on where they pull data for any specific state it may lag as my state goes by DPH and so far they have not reported on the weekends but they have gone from updating the numbers daily to twice a day. Also you may have to select USA and English your first time. That random county may have a “Super Spreader” not the type you find at your local strip club but someone with a very high viral load that has close contact with a large amount of people. This is what happened in S Korea where one ill lady attended church. https://coronavirus.1point3acres.com/#stat Also don’t want this to get lost on the last page: Maybe this will better help explain the “healthcare systems getting overwhelmed” situation that we do face. This is from a fellow AFOL so I think he dumbed it down enough for the audience.

  33. So many expert opinions... and the name calling has begun! Good stuff. PS: 3K mortgages and 2K rent for a 2 bedroom apartment are completely normal in NYC. $1K is nothing. It's 10 days rent/living/housing/whatever.

  34. Not sure where you are getting information, but you seem very ill-informed. CoVid-19 HAS mutated twice, that we know of. Once for the leap from humans to people. Then again in people, there is now an s&L strain. How many stains would you like? I see it as a thread people are using to decide which side of history they prefer to be on. Sadly, most wont learn until directly effected. One of the many unfortunate pitfalls of humans.

  35. This thing is averaging 2% in most places and much higher in Italy. It’s already hit our area and shut almost everything down. This must be endured to prevent a greater catastrophe. And beyond the death rate is the possibility of long lasting lung damage and other effects in the survivors. 25% of SARS survivors experienced this. My city Toronto suffered that bug particularly hard.

  36. $3000 mortgage in NY or SF is probably below average and not luxurious by any means. It’s because the housing is so expensive that savings are hard to come by.

  37. 14,000 cases, 244 mortalities. Fatality rate is below the seasonal flu. This is being incredibly blown out of proportion. How would we have handled this 50,60 years ago? Not overreacting , and sending our economy spiraling out of control. The reaction is so much worse than the virus, and is having dire consequences. Ny is essentially shut down, NJ too. If you don’t have an employer footing the bill while you are home, or unemployed, you are screwed. A $1000 relief check will not pay a $3000 a month mortgage.

  40. Italians (I am one), tend to be very touchy-feely. Lots of hugging and kissing of friends and family. Japanese don’t usually go around doing that. So if I had guess, I’d say the social distancing that a lot of Japanese typically practice has worked in their favor. On another note - my school district sent out a note this morning that a parent tested presumptive positive. The parent has two kids, one at the elementary and one at the middle school. So, we’ll see how it goes. It’s a long chain to get from there to here, but we’ll have to see what happens.

  43. Believe it or not, Kmart.com still exists in 2020. They are down to ~60 different LEGO sets in stock. I received an email today giving me $15 on a $100 purchase, plus there is a $10 back on $40 promo. Some sets have long since retired. Minecraft 21136 Ocean Monument is going for close to $200 FBA right now, and can be had for ~$110 after shipping, tax and freecash (before any points you might have), with $11 back in points. Not a lot of margin yet, but if you have more points to burn this might be of interest. No guarantees on the condition of the set once it arrives - haven't ordered from them in almost a year (since they closed all their stores in a 100 mile radius from me).
