  3. Sorry if someone has already posted it, but here are a couple of photos of the set from my local store. It's hard to capture the scale of the set in these photos, but it's impressive. The box is really cool too. Whenever someone stopped to gawk at it, someone else would ask "are you getting one"? There seems to be only two answers....1) oh, yeah for sure... or 2) are you kidding me? It's an $800 Lego set!?! The former mostly from dudes...the latter mostly from moms with teenage kids..haha

  4. Bought a 90% complete 10178 Motorized AT-AT a few weeks ago for $80 locally. After 2 Bricklink orders totalling about $20, I've got this baby complete and walking again. Only missing the General Veers fig now. Such an awesome set!

  6. After trying not to buy much lately, I've found a few decent deals that I couldn't pass. Used, 99% complete Sopwith Camel, no instructions - $25 Sealed 4736 Harry Potter Freeing Dobby set and sealed 7913 Clone Trooper Battle pack - $10 total. And the buy I'm most happy about: Green Grocer, Town Hall, Fire Brigade, Grand Emporium, Pet Shop, Town Plan, and 7938 Passenger train. All are built and dusty, appear to be mostly complete, and there were no instructions - $300

  11. Talking to customer service. First time trying this. Rep was very good and I basically told her that almost all my orders come in plastic bags which result in crushed boxes. I told her to please tell the packaging department to use boxes So everyone can rest assure no more bags ?

My take on it is that TLG have observed how prices on the secondary market went crazy and decided they wanted a slice of that market too. THey realised there were now enough people willing to pay over 500 USD for a single set that they could produce their own mega sets and be successful (early UCS sets were not great sellers and tended to have shorter lives). This has been hugely damaging for the secondary market as now buyers have much more attractive new sets for the same price or less than the classics. Also, they know the classics are likely to be be remade soon and with a better look than the original. There is now just so much choice on the market - if we can add the Chinese fakes to the mix for the cheapskates, then the potential for reselling large sets at a good profit is ever diminishing. 75192 at 800 $ is a crazy investment unless you bet on a quick flip due to supply issues. The same set at 400/ 500 does make more sense, though.

  15. Hopefully the special VIP card is metal or something better than a regular card. Something like the Starbucks cards they have around Christmas would be cool. I'll still buy it, but the minifigs are a big disappointment. Any minifigures in this set should have been given the 10123 Cloud City treatment - more detailed and exclusive to the set. I do appreciate that they spent .03 giving Han and Leia new face prints. A fully molded mynock and furby would have been better too.

  16. Timed this Kmart round of closing perfectly again. Stores that close first week of October hit 50% today and will drop 10% more each Thursday till closing. I have to look into dates for the next round of stores. I believe the new 20+ close in December. Which would make the last Thursday of October 50% (give or take a week) I'll figure it out before then. Everything 55% off (used 10% off and 25 back in points coupon) ALSO if you use gift cards at a closing store they need paper (cannot scan from phone or manually type it in) I guess I'll save the GCs for the other store that's closing in 2 months.

  17. My local Lego store has it on display (and is displaying the box as well). They said they don't know how many they are getting.

  20. Model on display at local LEGO store today but no box in sight. Walk in customers are ohhing and ahhing but may have a hard time with the price ($900CDN). In the 2-3 minutes I was standing by the display 3 people commented it must cost about $500-$600. I tell them it will be $900 and they are all were speechless. Maybe seeing the size of the box on the shelf will help convince them later on...

  22. I can't give it to 2017, two UCS remakes disqualifies it. I like 2010 quite a bit. Imperial Shuttle, Imperial Flagship, Tower Bridge, Motorized Excavator, Grand Emporium, Hogwarts, At-At Walker, and Shuttle Adventure were all cool sets and great investments (except for immortal Tower Bridge) 2008 had Taj and GG but I think 2010 is deeper.

  24. Deals in Europe are horrendous. The usual trash is discounted, and no Scarif Tropper. Count me out. 3xVIP is nothing, I get better deals in webshops.

  29. I totally agree...a cloud city treatment would have been Awsome with an additional updated lando and a bespin luke(minus the hand with a distraught face print) but as of late, exclusive minifigs are unimpressive with all this 40th anniversary hype goin around you'd think we'd be getting Awsome exclusives like that...heck a "chromed headpiece" for R2-d2 with Print would be a great polybag extra...for example. so I'll be honest...the fact we get anything is a welcome surprise. I was a little let down when the dual molded leg rumor of these figs was false but the exclusive face prints was really nice to see... so let's recap: we are getting a cool VIP Star Wars Falcon card a scarif trooper exclusive poly bag (ummm ok whatever -lol) cardboard wheels(probably in store) and one heck of a nice Box with over 7500 pieces to build something rediculously fun and collectable ???not too shabby sy

  31. I still have three 10179 from the first production run cause I just didn't want to part with them. Could have made some money but decided not too. It's not always about the money. I have three kids so maybe one day they'll each get one. And I bought the sets originally myself from lego so I didn't pay too much for them either.

  32. Drag it? Who said drag it? Those wheels will never hit the pavement when I buy one! Too nice to mark up.

  33. I really just want one of those LEGO boxes with wheels and a handle. If I have to buy one of these sets to get one, I guess I will suck it up.

  34. Don't underestimate how knowledgeable LEGO fans are about their passion and/or when money is concerned. The internet is a powerful tool that has informed many to this fact. LEGO produces sets for speculators all the time. They might call it "collector," but you get the point. All you have to do is go to any Comic Con or convention and see how LEGO feeds the market. Collector this. Limited that. Ultimate Collector Series was the start. We can discuss the LEGO secondary market all day...It's origins and effects on the primary market. It's my opinion there is a connection between the secondary markets and LEGO's recent success. Not only did they pivot with brands, but they pivoted to adult buyer's tastes and pocketbooks. Sets got bigger and more complex. This set has "adult collector" written all over it. Sure, people buy boxes of plastic all the time, but obviously, LEGO didn't sell enough boxes of plastic in the 80s and 90s because they almost went bankrupt. Don't discount how important a smaller group of uber passionate collectors/investors are about LEGO sets. They buy much more than a "regular fan." As for resellers/specualtors, many view this as an opportunity. Their sugar rush has been going for well over a decade and they will figure out ways to make it continue. I for one sit on the proverbial fence. I don't like the remakes...but I love LEGO sets and appreciate the improvements. To me, crying about the value of the 10179 dropping is a waste of time. People have had years to resell that set. Once again...welcome to the site.

  35. Lets break this down. 10179 = 5,197 pieces 75192 = 7,541 pieces 45% increase in piece count. 10179 retailed for $500 in 2007. Adjusting for the 45% increase in piece count: $500 * 1.45 = $725 Then, let's adjust the $725 for inflation: $725 is $850 in 2017 dollars. https://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?cost1=725.00&year1=200710&year2=201707 So at $800 MSRP the set is already on sale! BUY BUY BUY We all thought we'd never see a $500 set at retail and now we have a $800 one. What will be the first $1,000 set?

  36. First.. correlation doesn't mean causation. Lego was in trouble and it wasn't due to lack of inflated sales due to speculation. Sure the new speculator sales help immediate revenue, but like all sugar rushes, it's not real, nor is necessarily healthy. Lego pivoted in what they were selling and what brands they were licensing - that is what turned Lego around... not scalpers. People have been buying "boxes of plastic" for entertainment for decades. Speculators don't create a market - they obfuscate it. If anything, one would argue it's more harmful as it creates a false view of the market that is unsustainable. I bet 99.999% of Lego buyers have no idea they can resell their sets when they are done as anything but "a box of misc legos". Sure, the UCS and other limited run sets are a different market and those buyers are different. But I'd wager that most fans still don't buy with the idea of flipping or 'selling for appreciation'. Most just know there are secondary markets where they can get sets that are NLA. The "investor" crowd only works when you are ahead of the curve or can influence availability. With Lego re-releasing sets, the availability angle disappears. With the decade or so now of the flipper behind us... there is no more 'ahead of the curve'. Lego isn't producing for the speculators... so when someone groans about their piece that used to be an exclusive showing up in other sets.. boohoo.

  37. I still get that 'special' feeling when building my sets and exploring what the designers have created. If speculation was the only thing 'special' about Lego to you.. *shutter*
    2 points
  38. These updated re-releases are the best thing to happy to the hobby. They are enabling fans who passed on sets earlier to get back in... they are enabling updates with new building techniques... and they are taking the hot air out of "investing". Of course the new prices points are a bit tough at times, but as long as the sets move forward.. I'm cool with it. (tho I did just buy an original 10188 as a gift for a friend instead of the new one..).

  42. My kids saw it in the little LEGO mailer and they like it too... then again, they always want me to buy them that garbage from the toy vending machines so I take their opinion on quality with a grain of salt. _Maybe_ if it goes on a great sale it would be worth picking up.
