  3. Hi, I'm new to this website. I just wanted to share with you my latest MOC. I am pleased to announce my most challenging and rewarding build, the American supercar, the Hennessey Venom GT. IMG_0030 by lachlan cameron, on Flickr Flickr photos: https://flic.kr/s/aHskNRp6jE IMG_1242 by lachlan cameron, on Flickr This build has a V8 twin turbo engine, a motorized rear wing, working steering wheel, 6x lights and a 8 inch GPS built into the center console. IMG_1089 by lachlan cameron, on Flickr This car has quite a few new ideas and build styles that I will definitely be pursuing in the future. IMG_1257 by lachlan cameron, on Flickr When I got stuck designing the front of the car, Dugald designed one of the front wheel wells. [thanks Bro!] IMG_1270 by lachlan cameron, on Flickr This car took about 2 months and has the most detail I have ever put into a car. So grab a cup of coffee, get comfy and enjoy the video! IMG_1274 by lachlan cameron, on Flickr Twin turbo and interior IMG_1210 by lachlan cameron, on Flickr My new car in the driveway. Wish it were real.... IMG_1111 by lachlan cameron, on Flickr I am a much bigger fan of the Hennessey after researching the car for this build. The curves on this beast were incredibly hard to replicate, and now I know why not many others have tried it before in Technic Lego... IMG_1252 by lachlan cameron, on Flickr The Suspension Works really well on this car, even though its 6.5 pounds. These Porsche wheels spread the weight of the car over the width of the tire and support this car SO much better than the old tires. 6. I think you're being too hard on this one. It's Rebels, sure, but look at the actual set. We have two classic Star Wars spacecraft that as far as we know are not imminently due for remakes, plus a Vader minifig. I have no idea who the Rebel pilot girl is, but she still looks cooler than a generic A-Wing pilot, so that's a plus too. Check out how the last Vader's TIE Advanced did (not the UCS; the minifig-scale one). I think Rebels is a worthless label, in that it doesn't help any, but I can't see buyers thinking "Ew! Not Rebels! I wanted Vader and his custom TIE, but not if the box says Rebels on it!"

  7. I just got a big Star Wars set at 72% off the local RRP, you trying to compare that to Chima, really? This cost be €37 each. RRP is €130, Smyths have it "reduced" to €110, I'll sell all 3 on local sites for probably €90/€100 each with no fees. What's not to like?

  10. Interesting phenomenon for me today. I picked out a set for $41 and a shopkin for $24 (gift). $65 total, something like 25,000 back in points. Had 12k surprise points and saved points came out to 40k in points. Of course if I applied all 40k points my points back reduced ridiculously to like 4-5k. So i decided to use a discounted gift card I bought a while back that I could never use because it always screwed up my point stacking. I applied a $19.xx GC and my points back rose up to like 8k. That was interesting. I got more back after I added a GC. I decided to not use all my points and just get the Lego for more than 50% off, to see If I could get more back in points. So I dropped from 40k to 25k and my points back jumped up to 19090. I played around with it and 25k was the sweet spot. If I cashed in only 24k I'd get 18xxx back. If I cashed in 25500 I'd get 18xxx back. For some reason 25k gave me the most back. So I got a haunted light house for $16 (and shopkins for $24). Received 19090 back for next time.

  12. Yesterday was my daughter's 6th birthday. We built the Friends Amusement Park roller coaster set. I think it might be the best Friends set ever. Really a great deal for the price, with a ton of cool pieces. Lots of playability. The Ferris Wheel is well done and was easy to build (her brother helped her quite a bit). Great set based on the recent sale prices for sure!

  13. This is a great set. Great build and looks great. Just great. Really great. Id buy them all day for $100. Or until I was broke. Or divorced. Or both. But, on the bright side, I'm sure I would get to keep all of the ninjago post big D.

  14. Medieval Market and Winter Bakery $190 from Craigslist. 100% complete with boxes and instructions. MMV even has an extra sticker sheet. Seller's kids are teens no longer into Lego. They had a bunch of other sets at pretty good prices too. These are for personal collection. I've been wanting the MMV since I built the kingdoms joust a couple years ago. Looks like a really great set. Part of me wanted to tell the lady not to sell them, her kids will probably regret it later. All of the boxes were in pristine condition and the pieces all look almost brand new, you could tell they really took good care of them.

  18. The right thing to do is keep them because you bought them from a different retailer. You can always work out a trade on here. Chances are, someone might want to get their hands on a few of these sets and you can pick up some new/different sets without fronting much cash.

  20. Question on yield. I'm a long term investor in the stock market. I love its passive nature, you buy stock, sit back and wait for its dividends to roll in. Investing in Lego is similar to commodity investing. In other forms I hate commodity investing, if you're stuck with a commodity that doesn't go up, you can't even take solace in the fact it will be paying dividends while it's in the doldrums. Lego on the other hand has this strange addictive pull, I don't know what it is that attracts me to it, generally I hate non passive investments (by non passive I mean the fact you have to box the products up and ship them hoping you don't catch a bad buyer that derails any profit from your hoard, not to mention the hoard itself, my office looks like a Lego shop more than an office) Due to some recent news articles on Lego as a viable investment form, I can see a lot more people jumping on the bandwagon lately, thus I see everyone's yields being put under pressure for a short time until those Johnny-come-lately investors get their fingers burnt and walk away. What's the minimum yield you guys would do this for? Personally if I don't get more that 15% a year from the time I've held an item, I consider it a waste of time and wish I'd just put the money in to the stock market with my other savings. I fear my current stock may take some time to shift thus reducing my over all yield target. My other question is, why is Lego investing so addictive? Is it just it's accessibility (i.e. Low buy in) or is it just the game of working out what sets will make you Lego rich? MoonKill.

  23. Hello, and welcome The question of yield has been brought up a number of times, but the answer is different for every member. It's true that you need to get at least a certain yield % to make it worth it, but it's difficult to say what the exact number is. There's things like shipping costs and fees you need to take care of, which you can account for pretty easily. Other factors are more difficult to estimate, such as the time you put in and the risk factor of buying sets. Also keep in mind that yield in % might be great on paper, but if you have to send out 10 different small sets and only get 15%, your actual profit in cash will be very low. People also just love to do this, even if they only make a small profit. To some it's just a hobby like any other (or an excuse to buy Lego ) I think the second part of your question is more interesting, but again it's going to vary for everyone. First and foremost, a lot of us are Lego fans, so that means we'd end up buying Lego anyway. There's other factors, which are more psychological such as nostalgia and the love of collecting things. I'm sure there's varying degrees of hoarders over here too, who just can't help but buy stuff. A certain amount of self-control is certainly required. That's why most people agree you need to set a budget. I would definitely agree that buying Lego can be an addiction, because you get a certain sense of fulfillment or high when you buy stuff. This topic has been discussed a bit as well, though perhaps not as much. This article from January comes to mind:

  25. didn't you see the asterisk and fine print? also 75150 is the cheapest way to get Grand Moff and you get a set exclusive Vader torso. throw a 6-7 month production life to sprinkle the magic reseller EOL dust. the thing that sucks about this set is it is a big box to ship. putting money in this set certainly feels like more of a wager than a "sound" investment but eh, what the hell. can't just keep buying Trevi Fountains, White Houses, flat irons and Wall-Es.

  28. I'd estimate 95%+ of people who frequent this site are best described as "collectors", not "investors" in the academic sense of the word. We're just collectors who have come to find a way to monetize our hobby. If reselling markets were shut down entirely tomorrow, we'd still doing much the same we are now - simply buying in quantities of 1-2 instead of 10-100. The collector mentality is the crux of the "addiction" part of things.

  31. There is a lot of choice, and the size of building just depends on what you're going for. If she's 6 years old, I would check out the buildings in the Friends' line of sets ... tons of cool, playable buildings there (Supermarket, Bakery cafe, Popstar house etc.) that won't break the bank at $25-$50 (not sure what the UK pricing is for this). They are open from the back to allow dollhouse-like play but still look good from the front facing a LEGO street. The creme-de-la-creme are the modular buildings, but you'll be forking out $150+ (again, I don't have the UK pricing handy) and the builds are long and challenging for a 6yr old (more something for you). The newest ones do allow for quite a bit of play, and are wonderfully decorated inside. However, to get to the inside you would have to remove floors (easy, because they are built to be removed), no dollhouse-style playing.

  44. Built the Seacow. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I think it looks very cool. I keep staring at it, it's just so nice.

  45. Hello. My name is Elaine, and I am a Lego addict. I have often said this in jest, but I’ve started to realize that it is not a joke. I woke up this morning, and the first thing I did was check Brick Picker for the deals buzz. As soon as I had put the kids on the bus, I started planning my buy of the day. Since I went to see “The Force Awakens” (again) last night, I was feeling like I needed some more Star Wars sets. I took to the web, and made a plan to go to TRU (since it was Thursday) to buy a First Order Tie Fighter, using the Walmart price (20% off) plus another 10% through TRUTH and 8% back in rewards. It was only 9 am. I spent the next hour itching to buy as my local Toys R Us opens at 10 am. I even considered settling for price match plus 5% off using my Red Card at Target because they were already open. I didn't used to be like this… I am a collector. I still have 90% of the sets from my youth, and I started collecting again around 2010ish. For several years it was buying a modular for my birthday and lots of sets for the kids. It wasn't until a snafu with the Town Hall that things started to turn ugly. It was October 22nd, 2014. I had a lovely birthday dinner and decided that I would buy a Town Hall as my present. I already had a Fire Brigade, Grand Emporium, and a Pet Shop. I had briefly flirted with the idea of buying a Green Grocer long after it went EOL, but decided that $500 for NISB was too much to spend. (This was some time before the Town Hall incident, but it was what first enlightened me to the existence of the Lego reseller market.) Needless to say, when I went to my local Lego Store that day, I was dealt a crushing blow. I could not understand. I was buying each modular in order, I should have had plenty of time to buy the Town Hall, but it was gone. I was heartbroken. I was devastated. I was desperate. At first, I was ready to scrap the whole idea of my Lego city. It seemed pointless to not have all of them (or at least all of the ones released since I had started collecting modulars). I was still secretly pining for a Green Grocer, and to miss out on the Town Hall too was too much to bear. Within a couple of weeks of calling and searching stores and coming up empty, I bought one on eBay for 50% over RRP. I justified it saying that if I did find one in the wild for RRP, I could always resell that one to break even or better. For a little while, I was content, but it didn't last... Fast forward to March of 2015. It was my anniversary. There was an hour wait at the restaurant, so we went to the Lego Store. It was double VIP and I was determined not to let another modular pass me by, so I bought myself current, and had a lovely dinner. The next day, I was feeling guilty about spending so much, and I came up with the perfect plan. I would buy two of every Lego set I liked, build one, sell the other when it hit 2x RRP. Perfect! I immediately pulled $2k out of a never-touched savings account (because bank interest is a joke anyway) and had the most satisfying Lego spree I had ever experienced. I felt so powerful and successful with every package that arrived. It was incredible. I wish I could have stayed up there forever… Within a few months, (but just over 90 days), the reality of what I had done started to sink in. After that first $2k, I spent at least another $1k acquiring discontinued sets via eBay and craigslist, and probably $1k buying new releases because I was still flying high and I had 5,000+ VIP points to burn. For those of you who roll big, I will put this in perspective for you: $2000 is my entire monthly spending budget for utilities, food, etc. I spent 2 months of my household budget on toys. I panicked. I couldn't return anything. I couldn't break even through selling because everything was still readily available. I watched my stocks drop at sickening rates. I wanted to take it all back, but I had gone too far. All I could do was wait and see… It was the release of Lego Dimensions that brought me to the Brick Picker forums. My stocks were still junk (TB, ToO, EV, PS, PC, Simpson House…), but my buying had calmed down some. I started watching the Daily Deals. I started hiding purchases from my family. I started getting carried away again. I started bargaining with myself. If I didn't buy a coffee for a week or if I put off a haircut or if I returned some other nonessential item, how much could I spend on Lego instead? I started exchanging my “investment” sets for things I wanted to build. The lowest point was when I returned some sets that I had bought at discount, for full exchange value, to get my husband a Red Five for Christmas. I took a few weeks off after that... I used to have other interests. I used to have a modest savings account. I still have a roof over my head and my kids are well fed, but all I see are Lego. I want to know why I got this way. I can rationalize any purchase. “It helps me relax” “I had a coupon” “I had extra money this month” “But I need to have ALL of them!” (I tell my husband that I would have been a great Pokemon trainer). Sometimes I get mad at TLG. Sometimes I blame the QFLL. Sometimes I blame the AFOL trying to reclaim a happy childhood build. The truth is, I can only blame myself for getting so caught up in a hobby that I really can't afford… This morning, while I was planning my hunt, I came upon the “why did you start?” thread. The story is slightly different, but it's really all the same. “One time_____ and then I was hooked”. I can't decide if it's genius or predatory, either way, Lego is like a drug, and we are all pushers or addicts. I have 2 Tumblers in my trunk...
