  4. To add on to my previous post - you can not combine both holiday trains with one motor. I built this set this morning and I'm very disappointed with it, because I own 10173. 10173 is an odd train but at least it's a full train with good features (tender, passenger car, tree wagon). This new train is NOT worth the money, except than you can get promos with it. However, there are still good features and they are: 10254 Pros: The engine is improved and much sturdier than the old model with a nice color setup (and steam!) The dark blue and gold are much improved accent colors compared to the amount of black in the old train. Rotating Christmas Tree More secure Christmas branches by using the lights to secure them on the side of the wagons It's easy to switch to RC for the engine and tender 10254 Cons: It's tiny at almost exactly half the size of the old train It's really overpriced at $100. You're paying $80 for the train itself if you assume $20 goes towards the track and that's ridiculous for what you get. The 60052 Cargo Train is currently the best available train set based on value, plus you can sell the parts and keep track and power functions and half cash left over. The flatbed car is rather ugly and only fits some of the presents. I don't like having small things laying around from sets and there is nowhere to keep the extra features and the bench bricks would be better used adding another car. There is no easy way to add the power function lights to the engine which is a missed opportunity. The set needs some straight track added to it. You really need to add another passenger car to make this train worth running and a place to store the parts of the motor that you won't use (black wheels). The winter sets haven't appreciated in the last 12 months and the 10254 Train looks to be best used as a flipping opportunity than a long term hold. It's a poor train for train fans and a weak set for winter fans (ranking just above the 10235 Winter Village Market). At least you can get this at a discount when you factor in Double VIP and selling the Promo.

  7. OK, yes, FBM sellers undercutting the Prime listings, I can understand that. The Prime sellers who undercut by $.01 or $.25 with autopricers and such drive me nuts though. You're not helping and you will still sell at almost the same volume if you just match lowest Prime prices.

  9. I guess it comes down to what you have in your inventory. I'm still sitting on MIB sets that that are from 2011 to 2013 and many of them are up to 3x, and in some cases nearing 4x what I paid for them... to me this is becoming the prime time to sell quite a few of them. That's why I don't mind blowing out slacking sets or minifigures by undercutting, even at a slight loss to rack up my 25 and be in the holiday selling game to sell these sets. Many architecture sets for example move nicely during the holiday season but during the rest of the year just sit idle without many people buying them at higher prices. If I strictly had sets that retired last year i'd probably not be bothered by this, in fact next year i'm going to be out of Minifigures, because i'm liquidating my stock, so i'll need a new strategy for next year. But architecture is one theme that moves very nicely from around black friday into mid december. And of course, Star Wars will have the new movie coming out right around then. Last year, Star Wars sets were rising in value during the Force Awakens period. It was actually a great time to sell.. I'd expect the same this year, before things fall off come january. Unless, Trump has already nuked half the world, then undercutting everything and converting that money into an underground bunker with a years supply of MRE's would probably be a good strategy for the present. I just need two more sales and i'm in. So, barring some catastrophe, I should get in...

  10. Sold 21118 The Mine for $142 free shipping. Buy in at 55% off from B&N back in June. These have really started to take off. Hope I didn't sell too soon. Better than QF'ing back in June for $15 profit.

  12. 2 Deals to report from BN.com: 1. 21307 Caterham is available for online purchase https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/toys-games-21307-lego-lego-ideas-carterham-7/30284850?ean=0673419267885 EDIT: Never mind this one, I thought release date was 10/15, but see now that they have this in all retail outlets excluding TRU. 2. Coupon code BNOCTOBER15 gives you 15% off purchases of $40 or more. It excludes LEGO, but just like last time, as long as you have $40 of non-LEGO items (but can be LEGO books, I added 2 LEGO Contraption books to my cart to get it to apply) the discount seems to apply to the LEGO part of the order as well. Math is a little wonky and it didn't seem to be a straight 15% (more like 10%). My educator discount applied to the LEGO books so that might have caused some of the wonkiness.

  15. No, but right now you've still got the 10€ code. Once 2xvip starts, the code is no longer valid so it's either 2x vip or 10€ off + 1xvip. 2xvip is essentially 10% discount so it's only better than 5% (standard vip points) and 10€ combo once you get above 200€. For items less than 200€ it's better to get them now.

  16. I'd like a Green Arrow as opposed to Legolas, but I'm not a completionist so it's no big deal if I can't get one. As long as Supergirl doesn't have any exclusive powers I could do without her too. If they wanted to just sell polybags of the all characters, instead of fun packs, I'd be down for that, I rarely use the vehicles. Here is the official Sloth picture from their Twitter.

  17. Be careful, you just might be starting a dangerous and costly habit. It only started with an innocent cinema but then came the Pet Shop, the Green Grocer and the Grand Emporium and the cold sweats at night thinking maybe there won´t be a new modular coming in January.

  21. I have so far only built Parisian Restaurant, and have it on permanent display in my Lego collection. I think PR is the best combination of outer looks, inner design and enjoyable building experience. Though the latter is the most subjective because I don't have experience with building any other Modular so I don't have any comparison. In my long-term Modular stash I do have a PS, a PC, another PR, and a DO. If they don't reach a good price to sell (many) years from now, I can still decide to actually build them. But until then they will sit nicely stored away.

  22. It's a tough one to Bricklink. The car baseplate are expensive, as are one or two other parts. I've had a pile of parts in a bag for a 10173 for a long time, even having TLR's Constitution Train and this new one coming. I'm undecided on continuing the 10173 build now that this set it out. I'm considering adding the one Constitution Train I set aside for a Christmas train to my "to sell" inventory, and abandoning plans to BL 10173. I think I'm going to be happy enough with 10254. I also doubt I'll be adding Power Function anytime soon.

  23. Some good ideas. The school does do various events throughout the year that they get more of a variety of things donated to them. I was just looking to see if any one thing would really motivate people. I can see the vast majority would rather win large and expensive LEGO sets/lots than other non-LEGO products.

  24. It's expensive to Bricklink 10173 compared to buying a used one. The rare parts are: The red baseplate (only in this set) The Black Roof Tiles (form the centre of the car) The motorcycle The books (red, purple, brown) The red umbrella pole (lance) The doors: green and white versions The animals White window panels and the windows (only available in old train sets but subs may be available at Lego in new mold for some of them)

  25. 10173 is quite rare and even more rare in Canada. I would rather spend $800 or more on other things than to buy a NISB 10173. Can always go the used route for about half price which doesn`t interest me either. It would be better to buy a couple of 10254 and combine them to build a better train. I am sure there will be some MOC`s coming out improving it in the near future.

  28. Alright.. got the low down. Shopyourway lady was already aware of this promo (guess I wasn't the first phone call she had).. she told me "Has to be a single item over $60".. ( it still didn't show up) so I waited and as soon as order showed up on their end she manually credited my $20 in points. So basically place order online, make sure you don't spend any points on it, wait ten minutes or so for it to show up on their end, then call to claim ur points! Pain in the A** but $20 is $20.

  34. Couple of recent builds. Claas Xerion was a great build apart from me missing a cog from the gearbox and having to tear it half apart again. At £80 it was probably the best value set I've built in a while in terms of build time and enjoyment. New RO At-St next to its big brother. I can see a lot of these being sold as they'll be coveted by OT AFOL's aswell as kids. Finally I gave one of the architecture skyline sets a shot. See what i thought of them and if they'll be worth investment. I just can't see how these will catch on. The buildings are so small to show any details. I love the normal architecture sets, I'm amazed how they can create detail at small scale but these skylines are simply too small, I can't see many people posting over the odds for a complete set.

  37. I picked up the new train today (something about double VIP and giveaways) but I won't be building it until Sunday or Tuesday. However, I saw your post and tested it with the old holiday train when I got home. Results: 60052+ the cars from 10173 (no engine and no tender): This setup worked OK, but still sluggish and I don't recommend it. The train started moving around the 4th speed level and the real issue seemed to be the power of the magnets because the new train magnets are terrible. 60052+ entire 10173 (engine has rechargeable battery pack), using only 60052 for power: This setup didn't work at all due to weight, the engine simply spins the motorized wheels in place. Example for 10233 Horizon Express - I run 6 passengers cars (from 3 sets) and 2 engines, with power functions in each engine. Next test: Pair the holiday trains together and make one long train with only one engine. I don't think that this will work because of the design of the 10173 engine but I have a little hope because some of the wagons are pretty light. Conclusion: You need a power source in the winter train to pair it with another train.

  38. Hello BrickPickers... It's that time of year again. Time to raise money for my son Max's school, St. Paul School in Burlington, NJ. After a very...VERY...successful first BRICKPICKER LEGO RAFFLE in which we raised over $62,000.00 for the school, it is time to start thinking about this year's version. The money we raised last year literally kept the school open...which is a great thing. It's a special school that once again was voted BEST Private School in Burlington County, NJ by The Burlington County Times, along with numerous other awards. We picked up 25 new children this year, which is great news as well. This year, Jeff and I will be chipping in some sets (UCS 10221 Super Star Destroyer comes to mind) and the school's PTA will be donating some items as well. As always, I will accept donations from members that we can raffle off. We got some really good stuff from members last year that helped sell a lot of tickets. Last year we had ELEVEN separate LEGO raffles and winners from around the world. Surprisingly, the raffles all were pretty much equal in tickets sold, with the 10188 Death Star being the most popular and the Friends themed lot being the least popular. Regardless, the Friends lot still help bring in thousands of dollars, which was wonderful. I am here today asking the community is there anything else that would interest people? It has to be something I can buy and drop ship for ease and cost factors. How about an Apple IPad or similar electronic device? How about gift cards? How about watches? You let me know. I want to sell tickets and I really don't care if there are some non-LEGO items mixed in. I'm looking for ideas, because I have to address the school PTA on October 3rd to see how much we will be raffling off. I will put up a simple poll to get some feedback. You can also respond with some ideas that will give me some direction. Thanks for your responses ahead of time and I am looking forward to raising even more money this year. Ed Mack

  39. I'm definitely not a large player compared to most on here. I'm more of that sector that is a hobbyist that uses the profits to pay for the collection, and while i'll sell throughout the year, I try and sell those sets that I think are at their height in terms of monetary potential in December when demand tends to spike. Like I said, this year, i'm planning on moving mostly architecture and star wars sets that retired around 2011 to 2013.. But, I think what it comes down to is quantity vs quality. I try not to accumulate 500 sets, that I'm just holding so that I can make 5.00 to 10.00 each off them. To me that is a lot of work, and time that I don't have. I try to accumulate less sets, but spend my time thinking about sets I think will make the most after 2 to 3 years after retirment.. Sometime you win, sometimes you lose. This year, i'm ramping down. Once, I blow stock out, I don't know if i'm going to reinvest the profits like previous years because i'm not so set in the future of this as a money maker where it's worth the effort.

  44. Just a quick reminder to everyone that TOMORROW sees the issuance of the JAS16 EBay Bucks certificate. Unfortunately, you can no longer "lock in" this certificate and earn Bucks by buying an EBay Gift Certificate - all Gift Certificates no longer earn EBay Bucks as of last Saturday (10/1). So you either spend the bucks on a purchase before the end of the month, or you get an EBay Gift Certificate for no earned bucks and then earn the bucks later. That latter option is ONLY available this quarter, after which EBay bucks can no longer be used for EBay Gift Cards (but can still be used for other Gift Cards such as 15% off TRU/BRU cards - but no more earning of Bucks on those).
