You kidding me, the empire are the big bad corporate entity, they'd have red tape coming out of their ears and health and safety officers running riot on the Death Star. Even Vader would have cowered at the might of the red pen brigade Do you not remember this scene from the movie?17 points

The Toy Shop re-boot hurt all of the Winter theme sets (and more). Having "The" Winter Toy Shop, "The" UCS X-Wing, "The" anything, is special. Now instead of having "The" special set, you risk getting stuck with the shameful inferior one. People paid for that special, "one day I would love to have that set" feeling. Replacing that feeling with "I got screwed by overpaying for this inferior model" has a lasting impact.8 points

Time to move on people. The Death Star still lives. Obviously it was such a great seller, why get rid of it? Why are people so surprised? It had the longest production run of any set ever and there are new STAR WARS movies coming out with the Death Star in it. Chalk it up as a push and look at all the other top notch sets being released. A few bad sets like the new DS or AOH don't affect my view of LEGO designers. The new Porsche and Technic sets are amazing. Disney Castle...stunning. Slave I...wonderful. Honestly, the 10188 was and is an iconic set and I have a few, but I will never build it. I really don't like it...Looks like a kid's set. The $500 price on the new one is a joke. Sorry. I will buy one to have it. I have wasted enough time and resources on this set. The silver lining is that the 10143 just went up in value...8 points

In production for 8 years is exactly why it shouldn't have been killed off. Here's why (and time for me to throw my two cents in). The Death Star should be the LEGO Star Wars evergreen set. It should never be out of production. I have a grand total of ONE DS. I bought it from Goodwill, missing minifigs and bag ones. It was going OOS, and honestly - I was afraid we'd never get it back and I wanted one for my (then) 3 year old when he's older. And that's my point - there will *always* be new Star Wars fans. And if LEGO was going to do anything evergreen in that line, then the Death Star should be there. The Death Star is that one set that should never retire. It should always be around for new fans. It has to be in the top 3 iconic ships/places in Star Wars. On top of that - it was available for 8 years. It was stock piled heavy. You had 8 years to buy it. No matter what, this set was going to be available for years to come, and at a reduced price. The big fallacy here is the $ signs a lot of people saw. 10179 and 10221 were available for three years. There's no way that 10188, even without a remake, would hit the same dollar numbers as those two sets, considering the length of availability.5 points

As a collector, I'm extremely disappointed. This would have been a day one purchase for me. No waiting for Christmas, no waiting for Rogue One. Doors open and I'm driving two hours to the LEGO store, buying one of these bad boys, taking it home, and starting the build process with my kids. I'd probably invite a few nieces and nephews over to help with the experience. That excitement isn't there anymore. Maybe some new fans that are just now coming out of the dark ages will get to have that experience, but for me, I just don't see the appeal over a handful of new minifigures and extra pieces. I guess I have higher expectations for LEGO. The brand is supposed to be about creativity. They mailed it in. Just like Assault on Hoth. That's two UCS duds in a row. I understand the logic behind the business decision, but LEGO needs to understand how they got here. Disappointing their most loyal fans does not help the brand. I'll be surprised if this flies off the shelves at $500. I'm passing on this set. I'll just a buy a couple of the new minifigures I like off Bricklink and call it a day. As an investor I am also very disappointed. Asharerin is right, this would have been a $1,000 set. Time to move on, though. Congrats to those that knew this was coming and cashed in at the peak. I should have sold for $600+ a month ago but I took the gamble hoping the new set would be different. My buy-in wasn't as low as others but I've only held these for about a year so its not a terrible CAGR. I should have bought more 75054 at retail.5 points

It's funny how the 10188 and 75159 get into mind of people and causes them to react so emotionally. The 10188 has wreaked havoc for years and people still haven't learned anything. It's the end and beginning of nothing. It's one set. A popular set. It made LEGO lots of money and will do so again. Why mess with success? We all have to consider the fact that LEGO rehashes the STAR WARS theme constantly because there are new fans annually. LEGO will not stop producing X-Wings or TIE Fighters (There's over 20 versions of each). There will be more Falcons and Imperial Star Destroyers and whatever in the future. I was hopping this would be a stellar set and we will see, but I would understand why LEGO didn't change much if it comes out in a similar design. The thing that bothers me is the price. $500 for a tweaked 10188 seems high and a bit 'cocky' to me. Being the highest price set ever should mean it the best ever in my opinion. If that kind of pricing continues, look at the next UCS Falcon to be priced at $600. Now that's something people should be upset about.5 points

I really don't mind the rehash. It is not in TLG's best interest to take risks with such an expensive set. Most UCS sets are poor sellers and lose money. For every Slave 1(which is a hot seller and will be around for an eternity) there are 5 very slow movers. 10188 had a proven track record. It was the best selling SW set of all time. 75159 will continue that trend and its profits will help support the next round of losing UCS sets. TLG did us all a favor by keeping 10188 at its original $400 price tag from 2008. That was a gift. How many of us are still earning the same amount or paying the same rent or paying the same price for food as in 2008? A 20% markup over 8 years is tiny. After real inflation it is much cheaper than 10188 was in 2008/2009. This move will hurt resellers for sure. TLG did their best to give a heads up. As a reseller it is your job to do research and remain nimble. Like any other job if you do it poorly you will have your head handed to you by your competition. It is disappointing because 10188 would have been one of those rare $1k+ sets and in short order. Will there be others? Probably not. These days if it sells it stays. If it is a dog it gets discounted or tagged "retiring soon" and that ensures oversupply on the aftermarket. Not alot of chance for something to slip through the cracks. Don't let 75159 distract you. TLG is watching the success Lepin is having with its retired sets. It is getting a free window seat to a grand experiment. As resellers sometimes we try and "fool" ourselves into thinking that this or that will never ever happen (just look at the first pages of this thread). A fool and his money are soon parted.4 points

It's not about calming down the community...It's about expectations. This ONE set in particular is causing too much angst around here and the wounds are self inflicted. Many of us made the wrong decision on this set if rumors are true. Suck it up and move on. LEGO obviously thinks this set still has some legs in its current form, thus the new tweaked version rumors. I'm actually happy in a way...I won't have to invest too much money into the new version.4 points

Exactly. Like I stated earlier. It's one thing if this was such a step ahead of the original. Some were saying this was going to be a fully realized sphere that looked just like the Death Star, and you would open it up and it wold have various compartments that were scenes from the movie. That would have been awesome. A re-release that's basically the same set with just regurgitated figures that are also just updated... well that is almost unacceptable. But it's becoming too prevalent in the Star Wars theme. I'm going to give you another example, and it's the fact they released two Poe Dameron x-wings this year. Why? If these same fleet of xwings appear later on in Ep8, or Ep9, why not wait until then to release the blue version? They released a microfighter of the blue version with a mini of Snap Wexley... Couldn't they have just kept with Poe's Black one this year? They basically created the same exact set a few months earlier, but just put in 2 exclusive minifigures. If you want those minis, you have to buy the entire xwing (which is the same design just with differenet colors) all over again. Another example this year was the Homing Spider Droid - only a change in pins and minis seperate two sets put out a year and a half apart. I'm a collector of lego star wars, but that's starting to hit a point where i'm not going to just buy re-releases just to get new minis when the sets are so close to each other. Minus what we know for the rogue one sets, next year's lines are looking unexpiring, as well. Another jedi interceptor but instead of Anakin, and Obi- we get Yoda. Another phantom, which was just released a year and a half ago - but I guarantee the only difference will be if you want Thrawn, you got to buy the entire set! This is where this BS is going. At that point, just put out a collectible line of minifigures and just produce less sets, and make them more spectacular. If Episode 8's sets just regurgitate half of the Force Awakens sets with just a box change and a few minifigures updates related to the current movie, I really would at that point just stop collecting complete themes. But, I wouldn't doubt 3 or 4 of those sets could get regurgitated, and I almost guarantee that will happen with the Millennium Falcon for the Han Solo film. No point in being a completist at that point, and even though the minifigures are a key driving force behind getting sets, they shouldn't be the only reason. If Lego ups the game, and each set was a substantial evolution from a previous set that is one thing. The Sandcrawler you listed, was a case in point. The Slave 1 was another. More than likely the UCS Snowspeeder will also be a step ahead of the previous one. But, anymore that's not the norm, it seems. The rehashes are becoming too quick in the release cycle, and almost always they are uninspiring and a simple re-release with just new box art, a couple change in pieces, and a couple new minifigures to try and get one to bite.4 points

This is just a stupid move on Lego's behalf. I don't even have enough stock of DS's to where this is going to effect me. I have 2 - both bought at enough of a discount where this isn't going to kill me. I can just give one to my son for christmas and call it good. What does irk me about this is how much of an uninspiring move this is. As I read through these threads, I thought to myself, "Yeah a lego death star that looks complete from the outside, but you open it in half and it's a playset sounds FREAKING AWESOME and such an upgrade over the old one. That will be worth it!". But nope, we aren't getting anything better. Nothing improved. Nothing new. It's just a boring redo. It's a reset. This also makes me realize one other thing. Why would I ever pay 2x or 3x on ANY set! Definitely not anything in the creator line, because there is a chance they will come back. The UCS line is the same deal. New x-wing, new snowspeeder on the way. I'm sure there will be a new imperials star desrtoyer, millennium falcon, etc. I don't have green grocer, and there's days where i seriously consider pulling the trigger on buying one. Especially during days i'll wake up and find I sold three of my sets that I had in stock and made 3x profit on it, so I think to myself if I just shuffle it around and use the profit on the set, it will almost be like buying it for a touch more than RRP, and in the end it's a wash when I factor in my profit and subtract what I paid for retail. But, why bother ? Why waste the money, why blow my current profits...because there's a chance if I wait it out, they'll bring it back and i'll be able to get one at of course 199.99, since lego will continue to serve up the same thing, but just jack up the price every year.. So, in the end.. lazy, boring, uninspired rehashes like this does have much further implications. It affects the reseller market, and it also affects my opinion on lego as a collectible. There's only so many times where they can serve up the same dish where you start getting bored from it. And i'm not alone in those thoughts.4 points

I am still stubbernly waiting for the (leaked) pictures. However, trusting all the stories and rumours are true. And usually they are. *** Hereby I will throw the towell in the ring. Up until around 2008 they weren't exactly far off.... Anyone who relies on the Big Mac Index needs to have their head examined. McDonald's prices things to what they believe the market will pay instead of offering an average of what consumers are willing to pay across the board. All this means to me is that people have been willing to pay more for the convenience of fast food in the last 10 years. * Note - I'm not an economist nor do I have any interest in being one. But I am willing to use some common sense when interpreting what I read on the internet.3 points

According to a fellow BrickPicker (I can't remember what thread but I read it a few months ago), to bypass the no required immediate payment for accepted best offers, he submits a counteroffer for $0.01 less than the best offer received. If the buyer who submitted the best offer accepts, which he most likely will since it's less than his offer, the system will require him to make immediate payment if you have that option checked. I haven't had a chance to try this yet, since I don't sell much, but he confirmed that this works. Maybe someone can give that a try and post their results here? It's a pretty genius way to workaround the issue if it actually works.3 points

Personally I try to price my items appropriately (looking at recently sold items) and only use BIN. Some sellers that use BIN or Best Offer take into account where they are shipping the item. For instance lets say that you have a 10188 (DS) listed BIN or Best Offer for $475.00 (free shipping). Shipping to the west coast from the east coast could cost $40-$60 more than shipping to zones closer to you. You'll need to take this into account when selling heavier items. Some sellers use Best Offer to offer a discount to buyers closer to them b/c it saves them $ on shipping costs. To me if you are ok selling a product at "X"% lower than your listing price why not sell it at that price and not mess around with Best Offer. Unless its a sought after item most people won't pay your asking price if "Or Best Offer" is available.3 points
-
When using the Best Offer option, please make sure you set the auto-decline and auto-accept options (you need the "advanced" listing tool but you should be using that one anyways) to limit the amount of BS offers. Some here like to include a BO option, to give people the feeling they "got a deal". Auction style listings are typically a no-no, as results are not guaranteed, unless you are looking at something in very high demand.3 points

Just want to remind you that most AFOL UCS sets historically sell badly while still in production. The colorful and playable Slave I as an exception, but basically all sets in that range sold badly. 10144, the AFOL DS, was a bust. Even the 10179 was a bad seller. Its price is more reflective of its limited supply rather than its overwhelming popularity. If it got a rehash, it would be one of the most embarrassing episodes in LEGO sales. If you still doubt me, look at the TIE fighter sales, which is not even a remake... Killing an outstanding seller and money maker to come up with a mediocre product (in terms of sales) would be an asinine move. In this light this 'copy and rehash' discussion is pointless. The 10188 was outdated, seriously needed an update and probably was not including the higher Disney tax in its price. If LEGO wants to keep it in production, this is the most logical move. I am baffled why anybody is surprised. Also, at least $50 from that price increase is going straight to Disney. Don't have any illusions about the price hike. Just bumping up an outdated set by $100 would hurt LEGO's image, the update was needed even if it only happened because of Disney wanting more money.3 points
-
I have been saying repeatedly on this forum that people should not mix DS with the other exclusives. 10188 was not meant to be retired. The new one is not a rehash. It is an update. Its continuous presence is a proof that people were buying it. No other set had its lifespan. Therefore don't expect rehashes of less prominent sets. ISD may come, but I doubt 10179 would happen due to inflated prices and Disney license. Modulars will never happen (Toy Shop fiasco). Metalbeard, Orthanc, Tumbler, etc even less chance. Just choose wisely. This panic about 75159 ending LEGO investing is ludicrous. It is not so hard to figure out what is potential rehash material. We can bet which one will pop sooner: Marvel/DC or Star Wars. It takes only 1-2 bad movies to ruin the party for a while.3 points
