  6. Personal experience (and you can look at my post count to see this): It takes a LOT of time to get really familiar with the ins and outs of LEGO investing. I've been visiting this site for about a year now, active member for 6 months, active investor (ok, parter-outer) for about the same time. I've read almost everything on this site. I've followed discussions. Only after about 4 months of active studying did I feel I got the hang of the game (and I'm by no means calling myself an expert). I keep detailed track of all my purchases (350 sets and counting so far) and my purchase history tells it all. I had a bunch of bad purchases in the beginning, which I'm hoping to spin into something good. A few purchases were lucky ones (Ghosts for $50 ). Also, I used to be excited if I got 20-30% off. Now 40-50% is the number I'm going for. I didn't even fathom that was possible 6 months ago. To get back to the point: Just reading a few threads here is not going to make you a good investor. Sure, you can jump on the next Tumbler train once it leaves the station, but that's like a stockmarket novice buying stock in a company because they've read in the news it's the next big thing. And as others have said: it is easy to amass a large collection of LEGO. Selling it for a good price is not so easy. Anyone can undercut of course, but that's only going to get you so far .... Net, because this game now requires a significant investment of time AND resources, I don't think we're heading off a cliff anytime soon. The well-informed get the good deals, and the well-talented and well-established get the best sales. Breaking into that requires way more time most people are willing to invest for a quick buck.

Even bought some sets on Friday night and sold them on Saturday. A few notes about the sale Friends were a hot seller. Girls really liked those and having a selection was important. Duplos also were another hot seller – could have sold more if I had them. I sold CHIMA!!!! - $281 worth. It was nice to move some of that. Enough to almost cover my sand crawler. Now that is an upgrade in my mind I ran for three days this year. Last year I ran for two and since it went so well I increased it to three days this year. Super hero sets did not sell this year. Last year they flew off the shelves. Never assume what will sell. Have a selection so they can go through everything. Collector sets hardly ever sell. Really, only sold two sets that reached “collector status” in both years I have done this. You can sell current sets if the price is right (falcon, shuttle, etc.) So, anyway I took my profit and put it towards the family vacation and started to reinvest the original investment. So far – I have purchased three brick bounties from a local mom and pop shop that still had them at retail (99.99) per, a sand crawler (which I bought for May the fourth), a Tyridium shuttle, a deep sea helicopter, a rhino vs. sandman, nether fortress, desert outpost, general Grievous, batboat harbor pursuit, helicopter pursuit (2), and a boulder blaster. My moral, if you can do it, those small sets do payoff if you can sell them en masse. My second garage sale allows me to do it. Not everything has to be sold as small sets but if you sell 50 of them then that profit and effort is worth it. My second moral, if someone is willing to buy Chima – Sell it!!! Sell it quick and when they come back to buy another $100 worth of chima don’t let them see you do the “I’m selling my Chima happy dance.” - JUST SELL IT!!!! In case you were wondering 60117 was given to my wife to give to a friend. I counted it as a sale but hat is why it is a Zero

  13. Like Phil B, I rarely buy Lego for investing these days unless I get a hefty discount (40% and up). If you think something isn't hoarded, think again. I recently sent some Ant-Man sets into FBA thinking that there was a clear path to $80+ but boy was I wrong. Somebody parked 350 units last week and the price has stagnated. 350 units! How the hell does one seller buy up that many? What concerns me most about the current market is the number of sellers. Even before retirement, lots of sets have 100-200 sellers on Amazon. That was unheard of a couple of years ago. Most of these sellers are not Lego aficionados like you or I. They heard about the returns on Lego and they are treating it as a commodity and they buy IN MASS. They'll eventually crash the market and then move on to something else.

  19. Nothing has a guarantee return. As return offered is a function of the risk of return, and if you think you’ve found something that does, then it’s mis-priced. What to look for is a risk/return ratio that is favourable. When actually gambling and I once was a semi-professional gambler (before the online books got sharp) the aim was to look for mispriced odds. Where the odds offered are out of line with the probably of the event occurring and even then you only have to be right 51% of the time, assuming you get your units correctly managed. Anyway, the current risk/return ratio on Lego is still incredibly favourable, in many cases the worse-case scenario is a no or low loss risk weighted against a sizeable upside opportunity. And the reason for this is that Lego “investing” is rarely more than retail arbitrage with Lego as a vehicle to monetize the marketing incentives and discounts offered by big box retailers trying desperately to compete with each other and Amazon.

  34. You have to take the good with the bad in this hobby, and it is a hobby for most of us. The reason UCS MF is over $4000 is due to the media coverage and speculators. I remember a few years ago looking at the price of a new one on Ebay for $800 to $1000 and I just could not get myself to buy one. (or all of them) Kicking myself now. I had the capital but I just couldn't see spending that much on a Lego set. The most I had spent on a set was for 10188 DS when it came out because my son was really into SW Lego. I debated buying an extra one to keep sealed but in the end passed on it. That was 7 years ago! I have recently gotten back into this because it is fun. It's fun chasing down clearance at Walmart or Meijer and when I do find something it is awesome. Here in the Metro Detroit area, we don't get the kind of clearance finds like some of you guys get. We are lucky to find 1 IAC or 1 IST on the shelf at 50% off. I am grateful for the shared information because I have saved a lot of money on personal Lego buys by not paying RRP which I had in the past. I do think making this site subscription based would be a decent idea as it would weed out anyone that isn't in this with their whole heart.

  39. A while back I purchased some lego from one of the owners of Brick Bricks, a terminator salvation MOC, a few other bits and this along with a bulk lot of loose. After asking him I found out it was the beginning to a basement for the HH. Its been sat in the cupboard since, until a few day back when I fitted the HH to it a started covering the floors and adding details. Now don't get me wrong the majority of the work was not done by me, he is an amazing builder and has added secret passage ways sliding doors, prison cells, and there is a battery pack installed ready for a lighting kit. Any way just thought I'd share, get some tips and feedback. I've got a brick link order coming with various bits and some more olive bushes and lots of olive grasses, which I think will finish the front off nicely. I haven't started on the back, but was thinking of a graveyard, with a tree? I was also thinking of a large lamp post and the street. Much bigger and gothic style rather than the modular ones. Anyone have any ideas for this?

  42. Good luck with that. That thing is huge with lots of tiny pieces. Those kind of sets I build the main building first and give them that. Then I slowly give out the peripherals, like the vehicle and some of the extra minifigs. That way it keeps being fresh and I have something to use as an award later on. And it can save you half an hour to an hour off the initial assembly. I pace out the Legos for my kids like a morphine drip.

  43. Going back to the OP no-ones mentioned the elephant in the room - this site. Im not sure how many tens of thousands of members there are but for anyone wondering what brickvesting is all about then a quick google search will lead you here, and there you have it, pretty much all the information at your fingertips. Long gone are days of using your own initiative, searching sold prices on eBay and taking your own risks - it's all here and most are success stories. All you need is the cash and away you go. Why wouldn't anyone want a piece of the action? Maybe it's time this site went subscription only? (I'll get my hard hat!!!)

  44. I think you are greatly underestimating the popularity and intrinsic value of the LEGO brick in this whole equation. It's not so cut and dried. Regardless of whatever resellers and collectors stockpile, that will have little affect on the primary LEGO market. LEGO is designed for kids for the most part and they will drive the entire market, both current and future. LEGO controls the primary market and overall, they are producing some dynamic sets and products. Sure, there are some retreads and turds, but overall, their product line has never been better and more varied. If the primary market remains strong, the secondary market should remain relatively stable.

  45. Well I obviously FAIL at LEGO. Putting together my bricklinked 10212 (so having to use printed out instructions). My excuse is cheaping out on ink but I've got to the stand and seem to have 2 4x1 dark grey bits left when I actually require black ones. Worrying thing is I also have 2 x 1x6 dark grey ones in my pile as well which i'm sure shouldn't be right. Will I be OCD enough to take apart the shuttle and see where I went wrong? Absolutely epic model though and HUGE - dwarfs tiny Jango Santa. I'd heard the thing was big but I reckon it'll be the corner stone of my display. Fun build and I didn't actually find it repetitive at all. I knew it would be up there but having one put together its firmly in my top 5 sets. .
