You mean you haven't got him working out the net profit on each sale when ebay, paypal and shipping fees are taken into account? On a serious note, a while back someone mentioned how they helped with their kids geography knowledge by having them put pins on a map of every location they had a sale in. I think bringing the kids into the numerical side of this business would be a good way of teaching them maths and getting to help with Dad's hobby, you do enough sums without making it work and it becomes second nature.. Here's my 16 month old daughter helping with the business. She wasn't impressed with how I was storing the Mixels, so moved them all to the other side of the room6 points

Perhaps the reason the teacher gets the answer wrong is because he/she is a math teacher and failed English. This helps explain the poor comprehension of the problem. I am enjoying reading all of the replies on this subject.5 points

Simple problem if you don't use common core math and just teach "math straight up." 117 boys 196 total kids Fewer means less than, subtraction, opposite of addition. The number of boys minus the number of girls must equal 79. Since it's the opposite, adding 38 and 79 equals the answer. No need to round or do funny stuff. My sons grade two math teacher asked me to stop teaching him advanced techniques for solving math. I said ok, then didn't. He's starting to solve grade five level problems at the end of grade three. Thanks but I'll keep teaching him.4 points

My brain works differently than most people's, to solve that I would do this... 80+80= 160 + 38 =198-2= 196 total 200-80=120-3=117 boys that way of thinking seems overly complicated for such a simple problem, but that technique allows for doing more complex math in my head quickly without writing anything down. Used to drive my teachers bat ship crazy in school. An overly simple example figure out 78x7 in your head. I would do 80x7=560-14=546, just how my brain works. I would say that kids should be made to master the more traditional method first, then use the above method if it works for them. Not sure what the eff your kids teacher was doing.3 points

Interesting read. I would tend to agree with red that the problem here is an "english" problem rather than an arithmetic problem... The key word here is 'fewer' changing the meaning of fewer changes the answer. As greg put it in a simple and elegant answer 38 fewer girls than boys is equivalent to 38 more boys than girls then just simply add the numbers to get boys (117). Add girls once again to this to get total (196). The teacher apparently interpreted the problem as "38 less boys than girls" so he/she forgot to invert the meaning of fewer at some point in her logic. If this is a recurrent thing, I would be very concerned about this teacher... though it is possible that she was just having a really bad day/was completely distracted by something else going on.2 points

I've had no issues, but I usually mention having kids. Just remember some places don't have any left or the employee doesn't realize there are some in the back. I've been told no at a GameStop and gone back another time to have an employee find one in the back. Side note I just saw the Chima Ice Bear Mechs all over the Gulf Coast region Targets and a few boxes of $5.99 C3POs at TRUs in that same area.2 points

Who wrote down the problem? Seems to me the "teacher" might have just written down the problem wrong, or perhaps switched it up from a previous year and forgot to update the answers. Still, that's super frustrating. Math is not hard. Telling kids it is hard makes it hard. Telling kids it's easy and then showing them you're not lying by quickly solving the problem is the best thing you can do for their confidence. You can easily brainwash errr... show kids how easy it is if they apply themselves. Argh, you got me all wound up.2 points

There are lots of ways to teach kids how to manipulate numbers without screwing with basic math. The results are in for provinces in Canada who've been doing this crap. Competency in math is down. http://truthinamericaneducation.com/common-core-state-standards/look-to-canada-to-see-the-future-of-common-core-math/ My partner teaches a required course in quantitative statistics in University (for the arts, but still they need to know the basics of math). In the last 10 years she's seen the decline and bemoans it every time she has to grade tests. Now that our kids (8 and 5) are starting down this path, we understand why it's so bad.2 points

You've hit the nail on the head. My wife and I haven't been a fan of this teacher since day one, even though she gets rave reviews from others. I've gotten a "plays favorites" vibe with her, as I've heard from a variety of different parents how kids are treated/not treated. My daughter was already asleep by the time I looked at her homework and did the digging tonight. I need to find out for sure who helped do this problem - was it the teacher or was it a fellow student? And, if so, why the teacher gave it a pass without marking it wrong. Something is fishy here. Edit to add: This is 2nd Grade Math (my daughter is 8 years old)2 points

up to 18 now after seeing these on multiple survival levels in Battlefront which is one long commercial of IST. Need to make an MOC of my lifeless body being blasted by a shocktrooper minifigure while hiding underneath the IST in the rain on the Endor base level. Imperial Shuttles seem to be rare in the rotation . There have only been 6 Imperial Shuttle LEGO sets and 3 of those were polybags or small sets under 100 pieces. There should be at least 4-5 years of no remake at a minimum - maybe even longer given the new movies and new material. This is the second largest Imperial Shuttle and will be the 99%'er 10212 UCS Imperial Shuttle. I would anticipate EOL to commence at the end of November during the holiday black friday double VIP annual mass extinction event. maybe we get lucky and it goes sooner but i doubt it , it is loaded in stock _EVERYWHERE_ at the moment. expecting target to clear these at 30-50% off coming up in June-July. yes its hoarded and being hoarded - on the shelves of every walmart, target, TRU, kmart, but assuming no remakes for at least 4-5 years and the frequent screen time in Battlefront and ongoing re-birth of dark age AFOLs , $240 by November 2019 would be my price target. at an $80 buyin, you are easily doubling your money post fees etc but again, that's like 42 months from now which probably sounds like forever to a lot of BP'ers.2 points

Hello New BrickPicker members and forum users... Due to spammers, jerks and bots that attack the site and forum constantly, we have implemented a 20 Post Approval System for new members and forums users. Each of your first 20 posts needs to be approved and content checked by Admins/Mods. After the Admins or Mods approve 20 of your posts, you will no longer need to get approval to post. We constantly check for new posts, but we apologize if there is a slight delay for post approval. Thanks...Ed Mack1 point

There´s only a few more listings for this than the Seacow so I think that by the end of the year and Rogue 1, we could be hitting a sweet spot of a further price jump to near 1.5k.1 point

Definitely a psychological thing. People feel much better about spending 99c vs 1EUR and i think it just scales up. And then when it breaks 1k it wont break it by a few EUR (although I'd hazard that a lot of people would be willing to let this go at 1k so it might stick there a while).1 point

ball = $0.05, bat = $1.05 I agree the wording could be improved, but if you slow down and read it properly the answer should be obvious. If you're rushing or careless, it's easy to make mistakes. Funny enough, that's why in math you ALWAYS show your work and write neat and tidy. It is _sooooo_ hard to teach that to an 8 year old, but I try anyways.1 point

No, but there's a useless bucket on the track machine that you can remove and use for something else. The blade needs to be _in front_ of the tracks to be effective, otherwise what the hell is it going to be used for?1 point

I love how they built the whole MF in it's entirety instead of using CGI. This is what made TFA feel authentic. The number of sets, vehicles, and aliens they actually built/made is incredible. They cover a lot of this on the TFA blu-ray.1 point

Your post really got me thinking... there is nothing wrong with what you did since it gives you the right answer!! In fact, it follows concepts of "estimation" in math. It is something that is part of traditional math - quickly estimating the result of something that doesn't need a precise answer. And most important: The way your brain does math still requires knowledge of core concepts like "carry the 1, or borrow 1" which they no longer teach. That's one of two fundamental problems I have with the new wave math. 1) Certain basic skills that are no longer taught when they could AUGMENT the ideas of common core math. 2) At my kids school, learning in groups is encouraged which does ZERO to help the stronger or weaker students. The strong students do the problem for the weaker kids, but the problem has to be simple enough for the weaker kids to understand. There is no benefit to either group.1 point

Toys'r'us do price match online prices, at least they did with GG and DV last week. They'll only price match amazon prices and not 3rd party sellers on amazon.1 point

Interesting approach but I'm not sure the SSD is a good example. As mentioned before, the part-out value of this set is way below the current NISB value. Apart from the stickers, there are no real exclusive or hard-to-find parts in this set. If you look at other similar sets (e.g. Death Star) the part-out value is way above the NISB value because of parts that are (almost) exclusive to that particular set. I don't see this one hitting 2K anytime soon.1 point

There is probably no issue whatsoever - I would just send the buyer an invoice (as a reminder). Regarding the feedback - Most feedback that people leave are just the same standard feedback that they leave for everyone (unless something is out of the ordinary).1 point

See I'd go with the opposite line of thinking. If you have a new playset that's not selling well, retire the alternatives to push customers towards your new product that you've invested in.1 point

This entirely depends on the sets you are building and how much you want to rebuild them. Many sets can be separated by build and placed in ziploc bags, mostly built together. Examples of this include Harry Potter, City houses, all of the winter sets, Arkham Asylum. Modular sets nicely fit in any 12x12" box and the dimensions of a box of pallet wrap is 12x12 at the base and 16 or 19" high. If you have a warehouse near you or work for a company that ships pallets of goods, then you have a source of 12x12 boxes. Pirate ship sets can be carefully packed into boxes with the masts and sails removed with no damage. Exclusives like the Mini and VW Camper Van are perfect sets to simply drop into a box together Instructions perfectly fit into Large Flat Rate USPS boxes and can be sorted by set type. Trains can be placed in either rubbermaid type containers or medium flat rate boxes, long type. I recommend that you gather some USPS boxes for Lego storage and buy the Extra large freezer bags. Smaller sets can sometimes fit in Medium or Large freezer bags without taking them apart and simply take apart the ones that you want to rebuild. I rotate my display sets 2-3 times a year and sometimes I take them apart and sometimes I don't. Please don't use the Kragle and good luck.1 point

My kids build the sets from instructions, display them for a bit and then just sort of smash them together. They later make their own stuff with what they have. I feel like the instructions teach technique. It should teach how to make a car instead of slapping wheels under a box. Sure, my girls are still at the box stage, but their boxes are utilizing a bit more finesse than a year ago.1 point
