Well I bought the Assault on Hoth set tonight and compared it to the new Bat Cave that I bought a few days ago. No comparison really. The Assault on Hoth should have been a $219.99 set at most...without the UCS tag. While the set is not as bad as I originally thought, there are just too many other intriguing sets out there to recommend this set.8 points

I think this is one of those times when the acronym should be a little different. We should just go with ASS. Everyone would know what set we're talking about.6 points

Hey, BPers! In addition to being a fellow investor and Lego-Dad, I'm a filmmaker, and I just completed a mash-up of The Lego Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy. The two films are virtually identical story-wise, so I edited footage from both into a single video, cutting back and forth seamlessly. I'm very proud of the way it turned out, and I think you guys in particular will enjoy it. Thanks for watching! John EDIT: Apparently I have no idea how to embed. Thanks to TheGallows for posting a link.6 points

I do too. Even though considering how closely we follow stock levels these days, the suspense is about as thick as waiting for the convention to find out who the nominee is when everyone has already dropped out and conceded. It's more like a punctuation mark. Finality. Closure. You are RETIRED Tumbler. RETIRED. good NIGHT sir.4 points

Unreal. My thoughts. Many of us (I think I'm outdone by @gregpj) take great care and pride in our packaging. IF you showed these images to USPS they would probably not insure the items, b/c the sender did not package the items properly. Wraping the items in a single layer of thin packing paper does not constitute proper packing methods. IF the sender didn't have a box and actually gave a crap they would have notified you and requested more time to get a box. But obviously they didn't and don't care. Since you have contacted the seller and they say they are not at fault then it's now time to get ebay involved. For me its worth my time to confront this seller b/c A: I don't want them to keep getting away with it and B: I'd prefer others not have the same issue and buy from someone else. Obviously we've seen sets get damaged even when shipped in a box, but that is beyond lazy and careless.4 points

As a UCS completionist i will end up getting it at some point. But I'm not in any rush and I'm certain this will end up with a reasonable discount to shift units. The technic porsche that's coming in June however, is a definite day one purchase for me. Hell I'd happily pay for my pre order right now for that set. That's how i expect to feel about every Star Wars UCS set at release but this one just doesn't do it.4 points

It will be sub $95 this weekend. Selling CMF is not for the weak of hearts3 points

Mystery Mansions are $76.49 and Avengers Tower is $44.99 at Meijer right now. Might not be a bad weekend to get a few with the 10% off MPerks.3 points

That's a SNAD case. Period. The seller is responsible if the shipper destroys it. It also doesn't matter that the seller marked "no returns", by accepting PayPal and selling on eBay they do take returns, or they lose the SNAD case and you get your money back and keep the items.3 points

Here is my rendition of a drag racer “funny car.” Not built for looks, but for acceleration. This was achieved by both including raw power but also limiting the weight of the model (989 grams), and also reducing friction as much as possible (thus the odd front wheels). This build was somewhat inspired by Lego 42050. Contrary to many, I actually really like Technic set 42050. Not for looks to be sure, but at least the looks were consistent with the name usually given to these cars (i.e. “funny car”; TLG mercifully titled the 42050 “drag racer” but I think “funny car drag racer” fits better). The obvious lacking in the set was any speed. How can you have a drag racer and no speed? I did not want to depend on PF components, nor RC motors. IMO, they lack the authenticity of an engine that at least sounds like a real engine. So I turned to my pneumatic engine I purchased from Alex Zorko at LPEpower.com a while ago. I love this little engine. Tons of power but also gives the sounds of a real engine. In fact, in the video below, when played in slow motion you can hear the pistons (pneumatic cylinders) firing independently. I worked with two gear ratios…. 2.8:1 (here in the next few pictures you see the first set of gears in the drivetrain, these are the only ones that were adjusted, the other set remained consistent with a 12t gear as the driver and a 20t as the follower): and 1.6:1: Surprisingly, it was the latter that worked the best. I say surprised because although I knew the vehicle was light, and the torque of my engine high, I thought I would still need more of it to really get this car accelerating fast. But I did not. Also, I initially thought I would need to double-up the gears to limit slip, but I did not. By only needing one set of gears in the 2L size I had set for myself I also reduced friction (with both sets of gears in an 2L space you can see there would be a lot of friction). As can be seen in the video, I used two PSI figures. At 50 PSI the car started fast, with no tire slippage. At 60 PSI, gearing down to 2.8:1, and getting the tires wet I could actually lay down some rubber. Some Lego rubber! The drivetrain was incredibly simple but effective. Neutral… and one forward drive gear. This is the gear set-up for most drag racers. This can get complex though, with many sophisticated models allowing a type of clutch that limits slip and only allows a certain amount of torque to be applied at different RPM levels. But for all intents and purposes, for this model, all I wanted was neutral and drive. This certainly tested Lego gears, changeover catch, and drive rings. But incredibly, there was no skipping. This was quite amazing given the amount of torque that was applied to the drive train. This is similar to real drag racers. I remember a documentary I watched a while ago stating that the gears in a real drag racer only last 2-3 races before needing replacement because of the tremendous torque, heat, and stress applied. The goal of the drive train was to have a neutral gear so that the engine could first rev up. Although the engine is quite powerful in and of itself, the fact that it was already running at approximately 1500 RPMs before the gears engaged really resulted in the car’s speed. The whole set-up looked like what is below. To explain the picture you have the arrows pointing in opposite directions representing the tendency of the drive ring to want to pop out of place because it was trying to engage a set of gears where moving at different speeds (well, one was moving and the other was stationary) and the rubber bands acting against it. Initially, when the engine was started I had an axle placed in the hole where the left arrow is to hold it in place. Placing the axle here would stretch the bands back and disengage the drive. So I would first start the engine, let it rev to approximately 1500 RPMs, put the axle, the bands would pull the catch, engage the drive ring into the receiving gear and….. we were off! Nah, it was in the last round. I didn't check too closely on the City stuff. I'm pretty sure Fire Emergency and Station (60003 &4) are new, as well as the ATV. But I didn't see a whole lot of earth-shattering sets. Birds was my favorite on the list.2 points

As with the car restoration business, there are a certain amount of components that can be replaced or redone and still be considered original. I believe LEGO sets can be looked at in a similar way. To prove a set is 100% original after it has been opened and built is impossible, but if the vast majority of pieces are original and the instructions and stickers are available, to me, the set is worth more than a pieced out set.2 points

The short answer is it has to do with their inventory system. Because these items are already removed from their in store inventory, if you scanned the original barcode it would say item not found. The repackage/online item red tags are a way to circumvent this when they find older items in back/elsewhere. A couple years ago, I happened to stumble on about 10 Monster Fighters Mad Scientist sets this way. For example, if you do a ******** search for the Cube DCPI you'll notice that it doesn't show up as existing in the system.2 points

Someone was complaining about missing Hoth Leia, but I think she was way hotHer in Jabba's barge... Can I get a hi-five for that?2 points

That is exactly the case. The set itself is good. What is not good is the price and UCS label and these are what people hate. For a UCS it sucks hard. For a regular set it is excellent.2 points

I think if many of you ever want the LEGO world of "collecting" to be considered in the same league as other big time collectibles, then originality has to matter.2 points

I think that if you don't have one your opinion or comment on it is irrelevant and should not exist........come to think of it that should be the standard for any set.2 points

In the UK AoH has stayed in number 8 on the daily lists all week behind all other Star Wars exclusives and the MF which has been on sale at Amazon £24 cheaper than the LEGO Shop at Home offer last weekend. That's not great for release week.2 points

physically, I agree with you. I was speaking more on the emotional side of things. trying to convince a person that is not a fan of bricklinking (and when I say bricklinking, I only mean the top dogs, falcon, carousel, café corner, etc) but trying to convince them with just physical points misses the entire picture. diverting to substitutions, or bulk lots also misses the point. most who are not fans of bricklinking just "feel" its not the same. yes, we know that technically, if its the exact same pieces, its the same, but just like the woman who cried over the painting, and then hated it when she found it to be a fraud, there is an emotional element to collectibles of any sort, whether, art, jewelry, guns, lego, cars. people are not paying $5000 for a lego set or a $100 million for a painting just for the physical aspects. let me put it this way, is there a single, original lego set that you bought and own, that holds a special meaning to you? would you sell it right now for triple the value and then just replace it with a bricklinked set? maybe you would, maybe you would not. I have a particular lego set that I refuse to sell, it means a heck of a lot to me. is that logical? no. is it silly, sure, but trying to convince someone who sees an emotional connection to things with physical arguments will not be successful. I know, I know, cue the namecalling, substitution argument, bulk lot, and love of just arguing for the sake of arguing, but I do think there is a huge emotional connection that is sometimes overlooked. back to lurking.2 points

I think the reaction might have been a bit different if this set was not pushed back and the AT-AT was still available. I am guessing TLG is in scramble mode to print more 75054 or get a new AT-AT set announced.2 points
