I agree. IMO the Technic holes are no more a distraction to the model than the studs on every Lego set or the pixelation of using mostly square parts. I think the real turn off for AFOLs has been the genre. The most challenging Technic sets are mainly construction vehicles, which have limited appeal both for building and displaying. However if TLG released a $350 Technic AT-AT I'm sure AFOLs would be waiting in line, as I expect they will be with this Porsche.4 points

My confidence in this set is starting to build again. The late 2015 restock definitely hurt its growth out of the gate but sales have been consistent on eBay, approaching the $575-600 mark over the past couple of weeks. eBay has actually been higher than Amazon for a while but that gap has since closed. I haven't seen "Internet Seller" as the lowest on Amazon so I can only assume they are auto-adjusting their price as sellers drop off. I agree with Exciter, its probably a drop-shipper or broker account of some kind. We can only speculate how many sellers have large stashes of 10188. Nobody really knows. Some of these sellers could have dumped their inventory last year when prices spiked before the restock. Others could have already sold if their buy-in was low enough and they've been sitting on them for 2-3 years and want to reinvest that capital. For LEGO to keep it around for so long I have to assume it was a popular set. Like everyone else I'm interested in what the new version looks like. If its an Assault on Hoth type of flop, I expect a bright future for 10188. If its a home run, I think its still some slow and steady growth from here on out. Either way, the general public doesn't know about a potential new Death Star on the horizon so $600 is a reasonable price for most collectors or affluent parents given the number of pieces, minifigures, and OT nostalgia/classic value. Chances are most of these sets are being opened, displayed, and played with. I think that helps the long-term growth prospects as well. Feel free to disagree or provide counterpoints to the above. I enjoy hearing everyone's perspective, whether you've invested in this set or not.3 points

To members who think this price hike + coupon is a new thing for TRU, all I can say is get used to it. TRU has been doing this type of behaviors for years. Just go back and look at the "I hate TRU" posts (on other threads) from years past3 points

You shouldn't have to ask up front. You made the correct assumption. This is a slam dunk SNAD.3 points

I'm actually kind of surprised they are asking you guys with invites to buy $150 to get the dinky space slug set. With this type of event for VIPs, you'd think they'd give it to you when you show up, for free.3 points

I haven't a clue as to which term came first and seeing how loosely defined "planetoid" is doesn't help much. Still your points made me think something within the proximity of our gas giants wouldn't work (I imagine, this is science-fiction after all, haha). Just going by the holographic representation in The Force Awakens comparing the Death Star to Starkiller Base suggest to me perhaps the two Death Stars could have been even smaller than Ceres' dimensions while Starkiller Base was close to it. I guess when they go on over how big the thing is, I get spun around and lose my bearings on more realistic proportions. Haha. That would have been a golden opportunity.3 points

Well this is one set that all investors should be getting, no excuses, as most Technic sets stay out for 2 years my strategy will be getting one or two every other month, shooting for 10-15. and since as its coming in June I should have 300 VIP Points so the first one will be free, remember 2 yrs come fast so please don't wait forever. IST might go quickly at that price, but $79.99 isn't all that much of a discount over "effective" RPP on Amazon and the others. (Cue double points debate...)2 points

I would say it had more to do with the coupon working online. Many peeps can't find most of these in their local store, so being able to use it online woulda probly poofed any $150+ set.2 points

#LIMITED EDITION, RETIRING SOON, AVAILABLE FOR A LIMITED TIME! EXTRA EXTRA! Yeah, no news on this means it will be the next Death Star.2 points

That's why I can't understand the complaints. This is exactly like the two Comic Con sets. Those sets retail at $40. The piece count is the same. About the only difference is minifig vs no minifig. There's only 2000 of the Comic Con sets made, while there are 3500 of these (worldwide).2 points

Just got a letter from Tesco regarding their double boost they do with club card vouchers. As we know Tesco have been hit hard with all the other lower priced supermarkets, so I imagine thats the reason for this. Come this May and June 2016 - It will be the last time Tesco double the value of your vouchers. So £5 becomes £10 etc. Useful of course if you buy LEGO from there. So get those purchases in between the 16th May and 26th June2 points

It is apparently the new mantra .... everything is beneath .... I'm with you I'm happy2 points

That's the whole point, at least to me. You get to see a fairly accurate representation of a vehicle/machine but at the same time you can easily access the mechanical components and see how they work together. They look just fine on a shelf, and you get to learn and apply basic mechanical principles. If I want an exact depiction, there's the Creator Expert line, I have all 3 cars, but I don't like them as much as the Technic sets. I'm actually a bit disappointed in the fact that the gearbox of the Porsche is entirely covered on the underside1. Hopefully the body is a drop-in component². 1. 2.2 points

I'm thinking this is what happened: 1) TRU wanted to do a 20% off promo, but (yes I blame this thread, @exciter1) thanks to the clever coupon printing folks they know how much money they'll be losing on exclusives and other hoarded sets so the executive brass says "we need to make it impossible to buy hard-to-find items with this coupon, or else we'll bleed to death". Some folks over in middle-management get their running orders. 2) Mid-management has the team work on a few scenarios on how to avoid this rampage. Simplest plan gets the go-ahead first "let's just mark up the price on those items so that after 20% discount they are back at normal price". This gets implemented. 3) Come Monday (or whatever day it was the promo went live) mid-management gets feedback from CS or Marketing saying these prices are causing a lot of upset. They quickly ask the IT guys to implement plan B: just delist all the HTF items from the website. This gets done pronto. 4) Promo is over. Everyone has forgotten the crazy price-hike idea. IT resets the flag on the HTF items and they reappear. Lo-and-behold, with crazy pricing from point 2 still in place. Prediction: Within 24hrs those prices go back to normal, unless there's another 20% off going on (and didn't we see one), in which case - depending on the success of the FRIENDS20 promo and the HTF-disappearing-act - we might see those items go into hiding again.2 points

I hope everyone makes money on 10188, but I'm glad I don't have any anymore except for our display model. Takes up too much space for the time it's going to take to make decent earnings. When you see a seller on Amazon with darn near 1000 of these at a modest earnings price(though he/she could raise price) you know you're going to have to be in it for the long haul.2 points

For all those chasing the "next best thing". Just sold second to last DC character encyclopedia for $13 shipped. Sold all the pirate batmans for $13+ shipping. Did the same for every decent book/DVD recently released. After fees 50-80% profit, did rinse and repeat ×20 or so this round. $150-$200 in my pocket. How long with those tumblers sit to see those returns?2 points

That wasn't a movie it was a complete travesty and that's not really a mini either. Both cheap ass, crap copies of the originals. It's a legendary car in Europe. Probably one of the most successful cars in motorsport running the monte carlo one week and battling mustangs and ford galaxie 500's in touring car championships the next. Even so 10242 hasn't done great in Europe. The reason. The chose the wrong model and the wrong colour. If they'd done a 60's cooper s in Red, White or Blue it would have been a bigger winner. But the chintzy 90's model in british racing green with a picnic basket, yuck. I Finally, reluctantly ordered one this week to use vip points and get another Mr freeze but I'll be using the kit to turn it into a countryman asap. To keep things on topic. Based on the above i think lego should have done this porsche in white with red details. Still buying it though.2 points
