  1. You might want to look at Kmart.com - they're on sale there, and after coupon 9700063739387343 ($10 off $75) and coupon 9700063707757949 ($10 back in points for purchases of $100+) your total pre-tax is $137.53 - plus you have ~$12 in savings for the next order, which then becomes (using the same coupons) $125 pre-tax. Unless you get better deals elsewhere of course.

  2. $105 off retail + red card discount. Easy pick up for a set that might be going away before we know it.

  3. The further we get away from anything the more flaws you can find. Here's my favorite flaw from ANH. Some kid shows up with a kid princess to your secret base. Based on the ending ceremony there are dozens of available pilots. You have 24 fighters. The kid says he's a good pilot and some guy that's been with the rebellion a day longer say he's a good pilot. Without running any tests, you figure, "Let's give him one of our only fighters." In the middle of the fight, you place him in charge of a flight element. There is no logival reason why he should have been in the seat of that X-Wing or been the one making the shot in the trench run. Or,what about some of these? Apparently there was only about a dozen TIE Fighters in a space station the size of a small moon. Apparently years of training and dedication to learning the ways of the force can be distilled down to flailing blindly with a lightsaber in a cargo hold, carrying an alien on your back while running and doing handstands for about a week. Apparently the Rebel Alliance military doesn't have a lot of problems with people taking a lot of personal time, as Luke runs off on them in ESB and Jedi. The rank of General is apparently handed out to anyone. Lando had zero exposure to the alliance. Han had left the alliance on some kind of personal thing and wasn't heard from for a year, ostensibly causing COmmander Skywalker and Princess Leia to take a leave of absence, and the moment they come back they're all put in positions of authority. That's just a few things off the top of my head. I think if I really thought about it, I could come up with a lot more. The thing is, I'm not really interested in picking apart the entire fabric of the series. I just want to enjoy it. are there problems with the OT, the PT and TFA? Of course there is. Nothing is perfect. If someone has serious problems with the last 4-5 outings in the same series, can anyone explain to me why there's even a hope that episode 8 is going to bring back the great times?

  4. It's not the price that's high here...

  5. Not many would complain if it was a regular set priced around $200. Iconic SW themes are bound to be rehashed after all and I can imagine many people who don't have a good Hoth setup. People are offended because they put the UCS tag on it like it was special and charge the corresponding premium markup.

  6. I stacked 3 TRU vouchers and bought this for £34 recently, I've been putting off buying it because I wasn't sure how good the finished product would be, but I have to say, best £34 I've spent on lego. Very under rated set. Surprisingly big for an RRP £70 and with a MOC stand it looks great displayed. If you haven't got this yet, pull the trigger. I've put it next to the huge Helicarrier to show scale

  7. Where did i say theres no At-at coming out? You're putting words in my mouth and then getting on your soap box about it. Yes there will be a new at-at, it will be based on rogue one. It will probably come out next January hence why they dc'd the old one so there was at least a years gap. However, the fact is they have mentioned one being available to complement the set in the instructions of AoH, the new one won't complement it, as it's a different At-At to the Hoth one. So they must have been talking about 75054 which has already retired. Hence me saying it looks like the release of this set has been delayed and was probably due to come out last year and they've shot themselves in the foot by delaying it because you can't buy a Hoth At-At from Lego anymore.

  11. After a somewhat long absence from writing articles, I decided that a good way to try and get back into the rhythm was to revisit one of my 2013 articles, The LEGO December Effect. For those of you who have not had the time to read the previous article, back in 2013 I noticed an interesting price trend for the most expensive sets: they seemed to take a big deep in value in the month of December. Back then, I decided to compile some data for a few of the most expensive sets at the time and do a comparison between their November and December value. The table below is the one I originally used. It is pretty apparent that a majority of the sets in the list dipped quite significantly in the month of December, with the Eiffel Tower dropping a whopping 33% alone. However, it is important to remember that these expensive sets also tend to have the lowest sales in terms of quantity, a factor that result in one out of the norm sale to affect the set’s value in the Price Guide. Back then some theorized that one of the possible reasons for this deep in price could be that AFOLs, by far the most likely group to spend hundreds of dollars in these sets, put a temporary stop in their set spending in order to prepare for the holiday season. I also noticed that there seemed to be an increase in supply for these sets in the months leading up to and including December. This coupled with the above theory about collector spending gave a pretty decent explanation for the “December Effect” at the time. A couple of years have passed and I honestly regret not keeping track of this and analyzing it on a yearly basis, as the more data we had the easier it would be to determine if it was a fluke or an actual recurrent event. But, no point in worrying about what could have been while there is still time to show what happened in the last holiday season. The table below includes the same sets I researched back in 2013 and some others that have since retired or significantly increased in value. They are sorted from Largest to Smallest set value. Surprised? I certainly am. While a plurality of the sets in the table still decreased in value, the number of sets that didn’t is as close as it could be without being the same (12 vs. 11). More significant is the fact that the magnitude of the dips in value seems to have been smaller in this past year, with none of the sets decreasing by more than 10%. Something crossed my mind while I was looking at this table. Could the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens have generated enough buzz that interested for older UCS sets was impacted? Looking at the average decrease in price from November to December shows that while all the sets in the table aggregate to around (1.16%), Star Wars sets decreased at a lower rate (0.75%) relative to the (1.70%) of the remaining sets. For reference, the numbers in my last post were pretty much even at (8.3%) While there seems to be a small variance between Star Wars and other sets this time around, it is very hard for me to say that this is completely due to the release of the new movie. If the non-SW sets had performed similar to the way they did in 2012, it would be easier to make that point, but that wasn’t the case. In conclusion, it seems that the “December Effect” was nowhere near as strong this year as it was the year I originally noticed it. Clearly, we need way more data to determine if it is even a thing, but for that we will have to, once again, wait until next year! Thanks for reading! You can revisit one of my 2013 articles, The LEGO December Effect to gain more insight on this topic. View full blog article

  14. I like this set. It is bad enough to finally focus LEGO's attention on the fact that the target customers of this scale/price point don't want trash. The desperate damage control going on over Brickset is a testament to this. If the existence of this set was needed for this realisation then I welcome it.

  15. I'm a '77 baby and grew up with the O/T movies. I enjoy all things Star Wars, but prefer the original material. My 20 year old son grew up with the P/T movies and Clone Wars cartoons, and prefers them. My 7 and 9 year old sons are all over the TFA and Rebels cartoon show. They begrudgingly watch the O/T movies to humor me. I'm curious if there is any substantive demographic preference for one era of Star Wars movies/cartoons/toys based on what was popular during some key period in a SW fan's life?

  18. Some more building by the kids. My kids have been playing the DC Mighty Micros app so we went and grabbed all the DC ones yesterday. My daughter built Batman, Catwoman and Captain Cold (my favorite). My son built Flash, Robin and Bane. My son also decided to open up an Iron Patriot. Oops. Oh well!

  20. Built this over the last week. Only my second Technic build so far. I really do enjoy how well the gears, chains and different linking elements work in congruence with one another. Although the builds aren't quite as enjoyable as standard sets the end results are really intriguing. (Street Motorcycle 42036) I opted for the Retro Bike build and there are ample pcs left over but it still looks bad a$$.

  21. Brickset is running an article with info from LEGO trying to "increase the appetite" for 75098. For those of you not reading Brickset, here is the article: http://brickset.com/article/20814/assault-on-hoth-is-it-all-bad

  28. My kids saw ANH first (they are nine), then the rest of OT, then PT except the last hour which was too dark for them, followed by TFA. They like all of them, but TFA and ANH are their clear faves.

  29. Yeah I completely agree, don't get me wrong I'm not completely sold on this set from the pics but until I see it in the flesh I won't make my final judgement. As@inversion states, I think people are more disappointed by the UCS tag when compared to such sets as Slave1 and the SC, however you can bet your bottom dollar a lot of these decisions are influenced by Di$ney so maybe we can't all hold TLG responsible?

  41. I'm not sure about that, the employee I've talked to who signed me up said they are only getting 28. He is making sure to tell everyone that if they bring a guest, they will not be able to get a copy of the set. The employee was a little unhappy because it means that they won't be able to get one. A little off topic, but I just found a store that had about 8 MTT's at RRP. I'm wondering if I should stop back there?

  44. Bought 7 sets in Germany recently. 2 EV, 2 GBHQ, 1 TB, 1 PC and 1 SC. Managed to sell 5 of those sets for a profit, which left me with essentially a free SC and EV, so I decided to break out the SC to build it up. What an awesome build it turned out to be! Truly befitting of an UCS set, unlike the upcoming Hoth set... I have 2 other SCs kept in storage MISB. I think I shall get a few more of these down the road
