  1. I can't find the "edit" button so if a mod can update my first message, thanks by advance: Of course this chart can look useless to many investors but it can help newcomers.

  6. Very different situation there in the US compared to here. The Birds set was never sold in large retail stores in The Netherlands. Maybe some specialised 3rd party Lego stores had Birds in stock as a courtesy to their clients, but they had to buy them from Lego LEGO Shop at Home as well for retail price. It was never sold with a discount here. Anyway, when I look at the box of the set, I think it's very presentable as a gift, especially to people who love nature and animals. And it's a nice way to get adults who forget all about Lego have their eyes opened (again) to the possibilities of Lego.

  13. The desirability of this set was well-discussed when it was released back in January. I'm on the record here as saying this set may be one of the very few to hit 4-5x MSRP after retirement. Single most important factor: more than any other set released in the last several years, this has massive NON-AFOL appeal. Nearly all my and my wife's friends who saw this set went bonkers, especially the non-lego fans who wouldn't give a Star Wars or modular a second look. Non-AFOL appeal means lots of gift sales and opened boxes, just the ticket for price appreciation. Also, $150 for this set doesn't break the bank of adult gift givers. It's small, easily displayed, has science and educational value, and looks just fantastic in the flesh. For all these reasons, plus a short release life and non-hoarded status, I still predict 4-5x MSRP a few years after EOL. Another clue: the 2014 Lego Employee exclusive - 4002014 - is a very similar set (5 birds). It routinely sells in the $250 range. Yes, it's rare. Give 21301 a few years, it will match this, easily. Final comment: if they ever release a v2 of this set with 3 new designs, the original will skyrocket. 4-5x MSRP will become 10-12x.

  15. 2000 was during the time I was selling parts and used sets on ebay and built my own "bricklink" site. did that for a couple years in college then closed up shop around 2001, when i no longer had the time or space to manage it. If i could go back, I would try and keep that business going rather than taking a 13 year break...

  20. I bought 36. I bought about 40 of them last year. Last year, I got about half at $15 and half at $12. I sold all my superboys at $15 and my Lloyds at $11. I've sold about 35 of the Lavertus for $5 each and 20 of the city figs at $4 each. Cost $540. Sales $1320. Fees about $160. Postage and supplies about $388. Profit approx $232. Pretty great roi, and once you make the listing, it takes what, a minute to pack and ship? Price is better this year and the city figure is way better too. We'll have to see if that Ninjago figure is a good seller. I understand that a lot of people wouldn't be interested, but I don't think this investment makes one not smart.

  23. So... Temple of Airjitsu... Got one with the recent deal with that free Serpent thingie set. This set is blimmin' GORGEOUS. The details, the building techniques... this deserves to be more popular than the modular buildings, all other things equal. Love the use of the speargun used as a desk lamp support, the upside-down garage jointed panels for the roofs of the buildings, the way the small curved staircases are build by simultaneously facing three directions. And the end result is breath taking. I don't even care about the minifigs (I'll probably sell them off). Just gorgeous.

  24. The article I am sharing is not an in-depth article by any means, but I know there are a lot of you that like to take a peak behind the curtain and see how all your little bricks and figures get made. Bloomberg Business visited the Kladno LEGO Factory in the Czech Republic and it looks like quite an operation. I could only imagine how it would feel to be let loose in one of these factories for a day. I am sure it would be like visiting Willy Wonka, just not as strange, but then again, you never know The article's opening paragraph reminds us that it wasn't that long ago that "LEGO was losing nearly a million dollars a day". I wonder how often they would ban people or stop them from buying large quantity of multiples if we can warp back to that time period. The article stated the timeframe of just over a decade ago, so I will pick the year 2000 when some of the Star Wars sets just came out and before LEGO had any idea what was going to happen and on their way to be the #1 toy maker in the world. You had the 3450 Statue of Liberty (Retail: $199.99 | Current: ~$2300.00), 7191 X-Wing Fighter (Retail: $149.99 | Current: ~$1100.00), 7181 Tie Interceptor (Retail: $99.99 | Current: ~$650.00) and some great castle sets. If we can push it into 2001 because I really don't think LEGO felt that they were kings of the universe yet, we got more awesome Star Wars sets like the 10019 Rebel Blockade Runner (Retail: $199.99 | Current: ~$1450.00), 10018 Darth Maul (Retail: $149.99 | Current: ~$900.00) and the beginning of the Harry Potter line. Unfortunately, I can't go back in time, but I would love to go back and walk in a store and say, "Ok, I will take 20 x 3450, 15 x 10019s, 10 of those, 20 of those and so on". I wonder if they would have taken my VIP card View full blog article

  27. Thank you my friend. The reason of the 2 pictures displayed is because the message has been written last year with the old forum. There was a picture and under the picture, a direct link (in case of problem of a picture blocked for some reason, I added a direct link). But since the new forum automatically converts direct links into pictures, the second one has been transformed into another picture. Not sure that I am understandable. Aside note: I changed the display (sets/time becomes time/sets) because if did not, the chart would have been 2 screens large... lol Now it's squarish and fits better on a computer screen I could add some "retirement speculation" but I'm really not sure it would be helpful.

  32. Here's a photo of the box: The other two builds are okay, nothing exciting. But don't offer anything toward a winter build. I really like that moose. This place looks like a winter cabin, so maybe some white bricks on the roof and around/on top of the green, and you're done. You could tack on the blue "lake" to some of ice or existing winter set that features water to give it an ice setting.

  35. Yeah, I'm totally sweating my investment in this line. I hope I get my money back in the future. For now, I'm stuck with all of these LEGO sets of Dinosaurs from the most successful Dinosaur movie franchise in history because I totally forgot how much kids hate LEGOs and Dinosaurs, let alone both together. I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy coming back to this thread in the future.

  36. HH was out for quite a bit longer than RE has been. It was always suggested that buying RE now, though not a terrible decision given it's a Walmart exclusive, was a risk for a quick flip... some made out like bandits, others did not. I've got some stashed, I'm in no hurry. They're selling on eBay by themselves for about $75-80 CDN + shipping. After taxes and fees, you're making $5-10 per set sold. Some folks are bundling with RR (a wise move) but even then, if I consider what I paid for my RR at a discount, they're making about 30-40 for the bundle. I personally believe that I'll make that on a single RE by this time next year.

  39. I'd buy a few but I wouldn't go crazy on them. It's still kind of early to get any real idea on how The Lego Movie sets will perform long term, but the fact that this is being clearanced at 50% should tell us something about the initial demand for this set. I have a good handful of just about every Lego Movie set bought locally on clearance ranging from 30%-50% off and I'm kind of regretting it. I plan on selling in bundles down the road, but the next movie isn't due out for quite some time, and I could have used that money on something better. Just because a set is on decent clearance doesn't make it an automatic buy, at least for investing. Personal build it's a no brainer.

  45. I built the Black Seas Barracuda today. Well, over the past week. I bought this on CL along with about 8 other pirate sets from the same era, and some LOTR sets. I got them all for $45. Total score, I have the box to Barracuda, and instructions for the dozen or so sets. The build was pretty fun. The old skool techniques are a bit painful compared to newer sets. One major difference is the instructions. The entire set was just 28 steps in the manual. I feel like a set this size would easily be 2 big manuals by todays standards. They packed in a lot of changes into each step. I had to backtrack MANY times because I missed something. There is no highlighting or diagrams for which parts will be used in the step. The minifigures are pretty cool, I can picture some good imaginative play with the blue vs red capped pirates. The interior details are very poor. There is a whole roof section that is hinged, that just reveals a simple treasure box. Very lack-lustre compared to the BP or QAR interiors. But the colors are pretty cool. I need to flatten my sails for sure, but I wanted to snap a quick pic with the finished product. I'm missing a few pieces that I hope are fairly common. If there are any classic pirate system fans out there, shoot me a PM if you are interested, I'm going to put it up for sale as soon as I get the spare parts.
