  1. There is no need for this. They do the best they can for free. Everyone wants to take shots at the Mods, but until you walk in someone's shoes, it is easy to talk. It is difficult keeping the threads in order. Many people post threads that can be added to an existing thread. They take pride in their efforts and try to keep the forum clear of spam and obscene discussions. This forum is pretty lenient. Other LEGO forums just remove your post and you disappear from the site.

  2. I don't mean this as any sort of criticism or taking sides, but I could see some value in longer/busy threads like this being updated with a new thread yearly, or something similar: "Retiring Soon - Open Speculation - 2015" or something like that, which might make it a little more convenient for looking for current or even researching particular information from previous years. I can see this working on a few other threads too - Order Status, LEGO Employee Said, etc etc. Just might be more efficient/convenient.

  3. Don't worry half the people on this site will be Scrambling to buy Death Stars when its just about to late, and coming up with the $400 to buy them will be another problem for alot of other people. So you guys that still believe this set is a dud or will take years to make big money will miss the Biggest Boat yet. Ed

  8. The value of time is very relative. I have a house full of kids (6 of them most of the time) and a full time job. I'm in better shape with a buy and hold/traditional investor perspective. I don't have time to spend running after clearance deals (which aren't that plentiful around here, anyway). More power to those who can. A 2.5 hour round trip to the nearest LEGO store is a trek when there's homework to help with, dinner to cook, and soccer games to sideline-pace. I think there's room for all sorts of strategies, and I won't poo-poo anyone who's making money and happy. Missing one of those two... why do it? There are other ways to find happiness and make money. Missing both, well... I still don't think the Sandcrawler is retiring this soon.

  10. Wanted to post a close-out to this thread. The Cafe Corner (with original box/instructions) sold buy-it-now on eBay for $1300 less than 2 hours after I listed it. Prices on these are definitely trending upward, and very few original (used) 10182 kits have been available the last couple of weeks. FYI. edit: and I had messages from 2 other eBay members asking if I had any others at that price. Clearly, $1300 was probably underpriced a bit. Again, FYI for my friends here.

  13. With few exceptions, the forums are to express an opinion about Lego and a Lego investing, not about complaining about the organization of said forums. That said, the site's Admins and Mods have actually provided a separate forum for this discussion: http://community.brickpicker.com/topic/4926-forum-rules-regulations-facts-and-etiquette/page-2#entry145308 And if you are just having a bad day, feel free to post here: http://community.brickpicker.com/topic/6535-complaint-thread/?fromsearch=1 The forum has been around a lot longer than your time here as a member. The site mods and admins only ask that you give just a bit of consideration to where to place all subsequent posts. It seems this agreement we have with our members is working as the site is now 40,000 members strong, and there have been almost no complaints registered about moving posts. I sincerely hope you heed our advice and become a productive member of the community. Have a wonderful day.

  15. This type of price matching is frowned upon around here... It falls in that grey area of what some might consider unethical. TRU does not price match clearanced items so advocating "hiding" the clearance tag is a no-no.

  18. I am one who is staying away from this set. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a cool set and will do well when and if it ever retires. My son has one in our personal collection that we assembled together. It was a great build and he plays with it all the time. At $400 a pop though, I'd rather get 2 Slave 1s or 2 tumblers. I think both of those sets have as much if not more potential as the DS, and they don't weigh a crap ton, so shipping will be a lot easier. I've been buying one of each of those each month and will continue to do so for the bulk of their life cycle. This way I can accumulate my target on those and stay under the radar as I do it.

  19. ^Yes. Us member of this forum like to think more highly of ourselves than we should. A few hundred people buying a few thousand sets is not going to change the production plans of a multi-billion dollar company.

  20. what I gathered from post......"MODS and admins you are doing a crappy job running this site and I know what's best for this site because I have 9 posts". I'm not sure who moved your post but I will definitely find out and let them know you do not approve. My suggestion to you is if you feel you know how to run a FREE site any better you should stop wasting your time here and start your own.

  22. Just about the only thing I am going to guarantee around here is that the majority WILL ignore that little snippet of wisdom... Too bad there is no blog about "reseller etiquette and advice for the new investor" to cover such topics as: the BAN Hammer and Lego's stance on reselling Ordering limits in general, and other options to accumulate stock How to handle coupon confusion with grace and patience 0 feedback buyers - innocent or not? How to spot scam / counterfeit listings and avoid supporting their sellers TRU parking lots Useful, anti-inflammatory phrasing of questions and opinions on this site and so on... As for Red 5, I believe it was a very poor seller for many of the reasons that have not been mentioned these last few pages, and I believe it flew LOW in the trench avoiding EOL radar for far "too long" (given the horde's recent acuity and ferocity) due to all the other recent Sold Outs, holiday disruption, surplus stock nearly everywhere, and other factors. I believe it has not been produced in quite some time... and probably wasn't intended to be made again. I would be quite thrilled, however, to see it come back in force for a while longer. If we were ever to find out that the horde triggered such a thing, that would make this a seriously fun business!

  24. This is not related to the Birds set, but thank you to all above that expressed concern about our cat. I haven't been back on here since then to post. Unfortunately, we had to put her to sleep last Saturday, so it's been a rough week and a half. Again, I appreciate it, and please give all of your cats, or pets of whatever furry kind, a hug and appreciate them while they're still here.

  26. Hey Guys! So a couple months ago i started the long painful process of brickbuilding the 10179. I had many of the parts already from having a very large collection of light gray pieces, and i had been starting to really see the imperfections and scale issues with my 7965 Falcon on display (granted it's not a display model by any means, but it was better than spending thousands for the 10179). 7965 was also the set that brought me out of the dark ages. After trying for month to get a used one on CL or Kijiji, i caved and decided to start. Once finished i realized it was much larger than i thought, and had trouble finding a spot to display it. When i finally did find a spot to display it flat; it really didn't seem to do it justice and i began researching other ways to go about displaying it. Typically i'd use 2x4 clear bricks to prop ships up into more interesting angles, but 10179 would just be too heavy for that. Sure enough there were a couple search results of people mounting it on the wall, and one specifically on YouTube that had it mounted in a way that gave it mobility by using a TV wall mount. I decided this is what i was going to go for vs. a static mount as it allowed it to move into many angles, and the user had a YouTube video with great images of what i'd have to do. This took a good few weeks to complete as there were countless issues that arose. The YouTube video does not give exact details, and finding similar/like parts he used wasn't possible. In the end my mount construction resembles his, but is certainly a bit different. While the 10179 has a very strong inner frame; there are many parts i had to reinforce with more technic liftarms and even rubber bands (i'm looking at you rear underside section). I do believe i was able to find close to the exact same mount he used, but my brackets and the LEGO part of it have been constructed differently. I also added an RGB strip to the back engines to add some flare And no it has not fallen yet haha, but i do check it every so often to see if anything is bending/giving. The first night of it being up i was dreaded of being woken up by a terrifying crash I intend to paint the LED power cord the same colour as the wall to hide it. Anyways i thought some of you might be interested in seeing it. I think this really does the model justice (or at least saves some space!). ** Edit: forum upgrade seems to have lost the pictures... go to this post for new ones. **

  30. It all depends on what you are buying and why. Those $19.97 sets are most definitely a long term hold... with a substantial amount of risk that they don't appreciate far enough to cover the fees and cost of buying & holding. Those $10.37 sets _may_ be less risk if they are the Star Wars Microfighters but they've been lingering on the shelves at TRU for ages so they carry risk too. For myself... $19.97 on the first set, after taking it's share of the $10 off is - $14.97 + 13% tax = $16,91. That means I have to sell it for approximately $20.50 + shipping on eBay to make any money (12% fees on cost of item and cost of shipping - $12). I'd expect at least a 50% return which means I have to sell for $28 + shipping on eBay.... Who's going to buy from you at those prices when TRU sells them for $24.95 + $4 shipping on eBay? And we know they buy boatloads and seem to never run out.... I don't risk it on those $20 city sets. For the microfighters, there is a slightly more potential if you're willing to buy and hold until this Xmas. They've essentially disappeared from the US so there is a potential market given the strong US dollar... If I buy 3x4=12 to make 2 lots of 6, it would set me back approx $60 for a set of 6. The boxes are small so shipping should be $20ish to the US, $14ish in Canada. When you slap fees on, you need to sell them for $70 + shipping just to break even. Using my desired 50% rule, they need to sell for $105 for a set of 6. You won't get that in Canada. You might get some cross border traffic at $125 shipped but not likely just yet. <and if the 10.37 sets aren't star wars, run away, far away> But like Sandwraith said.. its so hard to predict. Selling locally down the road you might do ok. Selling on eBay might be harder. Brick Classifieds is still a tough sell - I'm not sure how many Canadian "consumers" are aware of it so you're still competing with mostly US buyers. At least most canucks know about ebay.ca. For personal use, it's an excellent deal.

  31. On BL every part must be clean, you're selling to enthusiasts & you're likely to hear if your wares are less then perfect... Tried all manner of bulk cleaning concepts, some work well some not so much... the washing machine is fast & labour efficient but expensive (electricity & town water usage etc.) I eventually settled on a bit of a backyard hack solution. Using a fish tank bottom bubbler in a nearly free aquarium from kijiji seemed to work the best over all. That later evolved into a pin-holed air hose looped around the bottom of a surplus farm supply water tank. The tank is filled with a bazillion of those little foam triangle makeup removers with a little bit of unscented oxy-clean type detergent. the bubbling action keeps the product moving while the irregular shaped foam lifts & scrubs away all the gunk. A little JetDry added to the rinse session leaves everything water-spot free as it air-drys.

  36. Don't get me wrong... Just pointing it out for you since the mods don't usually read the posts in these Canada threads. Oops, did I say that? Hahaha, revealed one of their secrets. I think that this is one of those cases where it's OK to ask and even say you were successful, but just leave out the finer details. On the topic of price matching like this though, if the retailer doesn't want to do their due diligence in check the price, that's their problem. Their policies are usually pretty clear and the employees up north seem to be better at following them than some of our friends down south.

  41. Long threads are terrible. The problem is, when I follow a thread, I feel compelled to read it from the beginning each day to jog my memory about what's already been posted. Today, for example, I spent about three hours just reading this thread, leaving me no time to read all 150+ pages of the TH thread before posting there about how cool the little elevator function is! So please, have some sympathy for those of us with compulsothreadophilia...

  46. Hard to explain in english, that's those moments when I feel bad... Well, I'll try to explain myself. Take a look at this: For me it means the item can be sold for Xmas at MSRP, and because of its quite low value it makes a nice (new) gift for families that haven't a lot of money. Rest of the time, nearly no sells. Even for used sets. Zero used items sold ? Does it mean it's so cool everybody want to keep it ? Or that it's not seeked after ? If you look at this link, I think there are too much red lines (unsold sets) http://www.ebay.fr/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&LH_Complete=1&_nkw=lego+31011&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=2 When I said that I would grab some with a high discount, that's not because I'm so greedy or fearful and want not risk investing with my sets: that's just because I would REALLY fear to be stuck with THIS set. So getting some with a high discount, I could resell them with a discount too (compared to the MSRP). And hope it's enough to make these sets fly away. That's what I did with galaxy squad and lone ranger sets. Bought 50 or even 60% off, resold with 30% off. I didn't want to keep those sets, to join my Atlantis, Naboo gugnam and Podracer sets (only 1 of each, pfiu ! glad not to have some more, it's really taking dust). Of course, I may be 200% wrong and this set will have a nice CAGR... or maybe not. I have a bad feeling about this one, so I share my opinion. I think that losing some money is something (invest $50, sell $40, so you lose $10: not a big deal), but beeing stuck with sets nobody wants is another thing (invest $50, no sales, so lose $50, and have to make gifts to your friends any family or be ok to highly discount your sales, and that's why I talked about discounts). Well, I understand that people here like this plane (the propeller moves when you pull the rear wheel, it's a nice 3 in 1...) but because I do not believe in the potential of this set I think it's ok to share my thoughts. Sorry if I offensed some people, it really wasn't my point ! Look, I love galaxy squad, especially the 70708 and the 70705 even if this theme is a failure as an investment. I will not be glad to see my friends investors disappointed and think "too bad for this guy, stuck with 10 boxes, I had a bad feeling about it, I should have share my thoughts". (I hope my english was good enough to be understood ! ^^ )
