I benefited greatly from his willingness to help (SSD etc.). Do what you can, invest wisely only what you can afford to lose and move on. He told me I would regret not getting more of these big ones. So true, if this summer has shown anything, it's that there's always another set around the corner. If you're really busted up about the Haunted House then buy them now from the secondary market for $50-$100 over MSRP and wait. Sure I would've liked more HH, but there are other great sets available now. We could easily see a couple more exclusives dwindle and vanish in the next couple of months. I have my sights set on a couple and am pushing my budget hard to get more purchased while I can. My money is on at least two more sets with great return potential going before the end of the year. It's fun to see how many I can get a hold of before they go.

Plenty of other opportunities out there. While you may grieve for HH, R2D2 is rolling away from under your nose.

8038 The Battle of Endor is done. I'm missing 1 #6536 Dark Bluish Gray Technic, Axle and Pin Connector Perpendicular. I replaced it with a Light Bluish Gray until I find a replacement which I can't seem to find atm.

It does sound good unless they are available at LEGO Shop at Home right around the beginning of January with those long return periods in place.

If you wait long enough (year+), $70 will certainly make money, but it might not be a lot and would be hard to double initial investment. The set has a MSRP of $55 so it will most likely increase in value to at least $110-$120. But you need the set to reach $165 to double money assuming buyer pays shipping, which is 3x MSRP. So it very much depends how much you value your time at. I'm sure at some point Lego will remake this set, but it should be a number of years. The TIE Fighter before this one came out in 2005

Just my personal opinion: the time to buy as an investment is when you can get the set for RRP or less. Buying EOL sets at 25%+ over RRP for "investment" should only be considered for the surest of sure things. I'd personally consider it for something like 10228 Haunted House but not for 9492 Tie Fighter. On the other hand, if I wanted one for my personal collection I'd be happy to grab one for $70. Ask yourself this: what set do you think presents the best opportunity for appreciation of your $70 investment? If you are convinced that 9492 is the best opportunity then go for it.

It's Ed...LOL. The small time sellers will appreciate the Classifieds. Unlike the current Bricklink, a seller can do a nice job with photos and store headers to sell a product. People who put the effort into individual listings can make a very nice presentation that will help sell a product. The site was thought up at work when Jeff and I were BSing. Jeff saw me using chicken scratch notes to figure out current set values and we started talking about the price guide and how potentially profitable LEGO investing is. It was based on US data to start, because that is by far the largest market. We later added the non-US data. LEGO investing and collecting is a worldwide phenomena and Jeff is working on small changes everyday to make it a better site for non-US members.

Right. The Beta will be released to a bunch of members so they can take it for a test run, mostly people with a decent amount of sets to input, experienced eBay/Bricklink sellers or the Mods. This is not set in stone. Jeff has an idea of how he wants to go about it. When it launches, everyone will be welcome and there will be not a minimum amounts of sets to start a store. One will do it. We are in the home stretch(Phase III as Jeff like to call it) here and I am excited at what has been done.

All of them are great! If the spaceship were any bigger I think it could have easily been the winner. Also: The cockpit needs to be at least big enough to hold two pilots, after all it's the "friends" theme. Picked up a complete, built once, Winter Village Bakery for $50 off CL.

It's easy on the buying side to be unaware of postage charges (no, you cannot send a minifigure in a simple first class letter envelope - and if you do, it's going to be crushed by the sorting machinery as it goes through the system, if it's not sent to you postage due for being too thick). $1.93 is the rock bottom postage cost, with an online discount, for sending up to a 3 ounce package. I don't know where you come up with the idea that all sellers have a stack of free padded envelopes sitting around, but that's just silly. Some folks may be able to keep up on their orders with recycled packaging, but certainly not all. If I weren't charging enough to cover the purchase of my packing materials, I'd have to charge enough to cover my time to dumpster dive or call up and visit various businesses to collect their recycled packaging to use. And while we're on the subject of time: it's not free. Any seller who is not selling for fun, but rather profit, must factor in their time as a cost. All that said, we're all going to run into buyers who think our time is worth nothing and we're all just trying to rip them off by charging an extra $1.50 past postage, so I eliminate the hassle of dealing with MOST such complaints by embedding most of my cost of doing business in the item prices and charging exact postage. That won't help me in cases like this where the buyer has no concept of postage costs or rules, but luckily that's a minority.

The postage cost, yes. But there's also the cost for the envelope, the cost to get it to the post office, the cost for the printed label, the cost for ink.

I exchanged a bunch of old cheap NERF guns to a thrift shop in exchange for a big box of assorted bulk LEGO. It had most of the exclusive parts to all four original Ninjago Dragons. I've completed the Earth, Ice, and Lightning ones for only 30 bucks, and only the Fire one remains.

I'm working on building (3) sets of the classic yellow castle 375. One is mine from childhood. I still have the instructions (no box) and I sorted through all by personal bulk Lego to find the original pieces. I found all but 7 of them. Missing many of the minifigs. I then found someone selling 2 of the same set (375) on eBay. Both with boxes. 1 set of instructions. One set 100% complete. The other set 80% complete. Bought the lot for $200. Turns out the 80% complete set was actually only missing about 8 pieces (not counting mini figs). So now after merging all 3 sets I have 2 set 100% complete with box and instructions including mini figs with the rare face shields. Only thing missing are about 25% of the stickers. The last set has no box or instructions. Missing about 8 pieces on the castle including 1 red door and 3 of the little 1 x 1 red cutout window pieces. This last set is missing almost all of the mini gigs but I do have 4 face shields but 2 of the 4 are the wrong color. So here's my question. I'm going to try to brick link the last castle complete. For the mini figs. I can get most of them as basic pieces from Lego or brick link since the only thing making them special are the chest plates, the stickers and the face shields. There is someone selling remade sticker sheets for this set on eBay for about $10. Any thoughts on people's ideas about finishing Classic sets with new non original pieces. And Also any thoughts on whether buying recreated stickers would add or lower overall value.

EXACTLY - there were words???? i didn't know there were any words to the post until i saw all the followups - i was also wrapped in the best lego hoarding porn of the last 2 or 3 weeks. it's inspiring to see a photo like that and also at the same time tells you there is someone crazyier out their then ewe and you need to up yer game. sticks and stones. i don't think emazer's meant to put anybody down - its his way of doing a fist pump - think about how happy you would be if you had $10740 msrp of one set and it went of stock with presumed EOL . i'd be talking exclusive smack too. and when i think about all the harebrained road trips from the good for something sometime walart app, where i snagged 4 rancor pits for $160 VS another getting HH, part of me says he's right. at the same time, part of the fun of this hobby is scoring killer deals and snowballing those smaller sets or clearance deals into bigger sets. if we all invested in the same stuff exactly the same way it would be really boring.

I have no problem with a user taking photos and showing there accomplishments of sets they've purchased, especially when that is a set they have recommended numerous times to other members. I do also agree its best to start early on these sets so you do have the time to build them up before they do disappear. I do have a problem with the second half of the statement basically belittling people for there choices of going and looking for the deals at Wal-Mart, Target. I for one enjoy going and so does my family. We plan weekend trips all around the southeast and stop in a lot of the stores on the way. Its a great way to break up the drive and walk around a little and possibly make some money at the same time. Theres a lot more to this hobby then just the investing part of which most of us are still collectors. The best run yet was when my daughter found the Vampyre Hearse and Mad Scientist to go with her Haunted House! The smile on her face makes it much more worthwhile then any of the money I make on Lego. Everyone has there owns strategies, budgets, and methods of Lego investing. Theres plenty of small and originally populated sets out there that aren't exclusives that have made a lot of money and gone double and triple value so to say one set is better than the other and only stock up on those sets is kind of pointless. Sure exclusive sets do well for the most part but they also are the trickiest to build up without getting banned. It could be argued the time going to all the websites and compiling all the discounts to get these sets in quantity just as "wasteful" management of time as driving around to stores. Only difference is you don't use gas. It all is work, time, energy, and money and however one wants to do it is there business. It goes back to thinking before you speak on the internet. The whole bottom of the post was just not called for. Most everyone is on this site with a similar goal of making money. How each person does it is up to them. Its fine to give advice which lots of members do but to generalize that if people don't do what you say then basically blast them on a public forum is not what the site is designed for. I've had a good time on this site and its nice to be able to give advice and receive it on a daily basis. There just is no reason to put people down.

While I don't agree with all of Ed's posts or methods, I for one appreciate any pictures that he posts and the help that he offers other members. Ed offers his time and advice to many members behind the scenes. I agree with him about purchasing these exclusives earlier than later. Too many people put off buying important sets like the HH, SSD, Fire Brigade, etc... to buy multiples of smaller sets that cost the same thing, but will take you 5-10 times as much work selling, packaging and sending them. I am not knocking small sets, because I own plenty, but investors and resellers should prioritize purchases to make sure they can take advantage of "special" sets like the HH. I can understand how many feel that a post like this is bragging. I like to look at it as a post that shows the sacrifices a person makes to obtain such a large amount of LEGO sets.

Honestly, what is the purpose of this post? Why do you keep throwing it in people's faces if they don't listen to you or question you ("For all you guys who thought there is no way Emazers has 60 haunted Houses."). Not everyone have your expenses (lack of), bankroll, space, etc... Personally, there are others like me who can challenge you in buying sets but we don't pound our chests publicly.

I took these pictures before I boxed them up, Picture shows 59 HH, and I already had 5 Boxed up, and I sold 2 of them on a trade last week. Now if Lego gets anymore I will be buying More. I get alot of emails and talk to alot of you guys on the phone and as most no I have told everybody to start getting the Haunted House when ever you can don't wait to the last minute, and alot of you have taken my advice and have been buying them, as usual alot didn't. I just don't understand how some people didn't get any in 2 years, and alot of you that didn't get any or only a few would rather spend hundreds and thousand of dollars running around all day at Walmart,target,etc and buying clearance stuff, Now Some of the stuff was a good deal Like Sail barges $50-70 and a few other things, but overall stuff that will be sitting around forever. How many of you guys can look at all that clearance and other small cheap stuff and say why did I spend all that money on that instead of buying SSD,HH,TB,GE,Etc.

Sorry for sounding so pessimistic, but the best way to test some new idea is to try to break it and see what happens. Believe me, we have every intention of doing that and we agree. Who knows, maybe this will be a huge turd and a waste of my time for the past year or so. We all don't know yet, but we will give it a shot. Almost three years ago, Ed and I opened this site to not much fanfare. People hated us and said we would be done in 6 months. Fast forward to today and we had the most traffic we ever had in August of all months... AUGUST!!!! The point I am trying to make is that this site is a little different than the other LEGO sites and it is still here today and growing. Over the past 2 days that we brought up the classifieds, I received over 60 PMs from people talking about their love or hatred of the other sites. From what I read, there is room for someone to try something different. If I do my job right and sellers do their job right, the buyers will come.

I personally think that requiring real photos showing a picture of the person's inventory is a good thing. I think relying on ebay and amazon feedback for fast tracking seller status on brickpicker is a good thing. However, I am very much like NMM says BA is, I use ebay as an inventory system (or sorts, not my real one but my what I want to sell right now one) and I set target appreciation levels and then run sales on some sets at times. Some may sell in a week, some in a year. I would hate to have classifieds deactivating for lack of sales. I think "fair" pricing is very much in the eyes of the beholder. For instance I paid $400 for the SDCC Azog and I think it was fair. I have sold a vintage video game (paper, styrofoam insert and a floppy disk) for $2,000 (single game) and I think it was fair. I've sold a Lego 3367 Shuttle for $67 bucks with free priority mail shipping and it was fair, I made a little not a lot. I've sold TMNT Poly's for $5.95 shipped and it was fair. I would second the reactivate button to help us out in posting listings and give some leniency. I do not know how one can determine what is fair, and when someone buys a Jabba's palace at $87 and someone buys one at $150 both for sale what is fair from the sellers point of view and the buyers? That being said, I love Brickpicker, and whether the classified is how each of us would want it to be, brickpicker is a wonderful place, and the owners want input and use our input, but they are the ultimate deciders for their policies on how to implement of what is well should I say it "fair".

Don't be swayed by a some people who theaten that you will lose them. If you worry about every person that says that, you will never release the product you are happy with. As of now Pacific has 4 shops that work fine for people that don't want to spend 2 minutes taking a photo. If they want to spend 10-15% on commission to show stock photos on Amazon on eBay great. They can use the other sites as well.

This is an excellent thread. Way too many people concentrate on buying and don't ever try out selling before they are just too deep. I am one of these people and I have long since learned my lesson (I think). For the first year and a half all I did was buy. I bought up over 1000 sets during this time. I would say that I was addicted (still am). The point came where because of money and space it was time to offload some of my sets. In order to buy more I would need to start selling first. So in January of this year I started selling. This was an eye opener. I know everyone says that it takes time to list, sell, package, ship, etc but you really don't understand until you do it yourself. It is very time consuming. You also have to expect there will be problems. Lost packages, buyer returns, etc. This all eats in to your profits and time. I know a lot of people say large sets are the way to go and I agree to a point. Just know that those sharks on eBay/Amazon looking for sets to scam people on aren't looking for small inexpensive sets. I've got burned a few times already and it is always on large sets. A mint condition Imperial Shuttle returned banged up and opened, a Robie House returned destroyed after FedEx left the package in the rain, a AS returned because the buyer "bought it for someone who didn't like LEGO", a Robie House and AS on the way back now for a mystery reason, 0 feedback buyers everywhere, etc. Some of these can be avoided with experience and others are just part of the selling process you have to deal with. And here comes the big one everyone is warned about over and over but never really understands until they sell.... FEES. The fees are much more of an impact on your bottom line than you may think. Make sure you find a good fee calculator online and just play with it a little and enter some values in for sets you have. See what you must sell at to get a certain return on your investment. This is easy and takes just a couple minutes but it will be an eye opener for some who haven't even thought about the selling side of this yet. Make sure you add in estimated shipping costs and add a little for supplies. I know most people don't think about tape, boxes, paper, ink, etc but it adds up very quickly when you start selling at a higher volume. As an example I have spent $40 this year just on packing tape itself. I made the mistake as I am sure a lot of others do of thinking if rough times come or I need the money to reinvest I will just sell a bunch of sets and be fine. The truth is it takes a lot of time for things to sell. Like others have posted its not like selling stock. It will take months before you can sell a large inventory of sets. If you need your money fast you will be basically giving your sets away to sell them fast. Many times I have been the lowest price and still had to wait weeks for the item to sell. To sum this all up I am still learning but I feel much more confident that I have gone through the selling process and know what is involved. It will actually change your investing and buying decisions. It has drastically changed mine and now I am making more money and spending less time because of it. Since I started selling in January I have sold almost 600 sets totaling just over $37,000. This has allowed me to grow my investment to over 2100 sets and make much better investment decisions. If anyone wants the exact numbers on profits, fees, etc on those 600 sales you can PM me. Buying is only half of the investment process. Make sure you try the other half before you get in too deep.
