It is getting more and more difficult to move up in the US in my opinion. The costs of basic necessities are going through the roof. Healthcare costs are insane. As a small business owner, it is just churning dollars and paying yourself with a salary that in many cases hasn't increased in years. It's a slow suck. Sure, people who choose the right profession or business at the right time can move up, but most Americans are just treading water, with stagnant wages and increased living costs. I used to be a lot more positive, but hard work and persistence doesn't always translate into success now. Even a quality education puts you in a huge hole financially before you get a decent job. Many Americans are in a daze, working harder for no status gain, more worried about managing their Facebook account than their bank account. Yet the stock market keeps chugging along, blowing off worldwide events and changing the rules to suit their needs. Maybe investing in LEGO makes sense in the new "bizarro" we all live in.4 points

I received this display case as a gift a few years back and just got around to finishing it. If I remember right, the case itself is less than $20 at walmart. Throw in some bulk Lego, and some velcro (hook portion) and you have a pretty nice display case. The stands are made using 4 stud deep plates. Currently, my case holds all of my unique LOTR and Hobbit figures. I hope this inspires someone.3 points

As long as my family is healthy, we have food on the table, a roof over our heads, and some money in the bank, I'm happy. I really have no desire to live any kind of extravagent life. So I would agree that not everyone is looking to get to that Q5 level, and the "American dream" differs quite a bit depending on who you ask. My parents keep nagging me to buy a bigger house because the kids have to share rooms in our current home. Oh no! lol. I think its funny, my parents were of a generation where they crammed 6-8 kids into a tiny house, and they always told me how much fun they had growing up. I think people get this idea in their head that if they aren't constantly upgrading then they aren't successful in life. The kids are perfectly happy sharing rooms, and we like our home the way it is for the time being. Honestly, the only time I ever thought about moving was to have more room for stashing Lego2 points

It's a LEGO forum and it's also about money as well. I think we could mange to have an intelligent conversation on the topic if people respect one another. Or maybe I'll just lock it and we can discuss the EOL of the Duplo Big Zoo.2 points

When I first got back into LEGO, I promised myself I'd stick to the Architecture series (the theme that got me back into LEGO) and a smattering of whatever I found interesting in Creator Expert and Lego CUUSOO/Ideas themes. But...I've run out of stuff to build! I'm thinking I need to "up it a notch" and start building UCS/Modulars to get my fix. I need projects that don't take one afternoon or even a whole day to build. I need a build that requires me to go to sleep before I awake to *possibly* finish it that day...Or the next. So far I have the following: 1. The whole Architecture series minus Trevi Fountain that my parents have "hinted" not so subtley to "not buy it...wait for prices to come down" or some nonsense which translates to "your birthday is in a month, we already bought it for you". I have acquire the coveted Marina Bay Sands and I'm in the process of acquiring set 4000010 "LEGO House" which isn't even officially an Architecture set but it's close enough. So I'm set here. 2. From the Creator Expert line I Have the T1 VW Camper Van and the Mini Cooper. Both were extremely fun to build and I love displaying them. I'll be buying whatever they throw at us from this line/group of LEGO sets. 3. My CUUSOO/Ideas holdings include The Ghostbusters Car, The Delorean Time-Machine and the Exo-Suit. I will hopefully be acquiring a Hayabusa soon as well as a Mars Rover but the Shinkai just might be out of reach for me. I won't be buying the Minecraft based sets as I just don't like them...At all. If you can't already tell, I'm a "completionist" type of person and when I start a new Theme or "Theme" (a specific line or group of sets within a larger Theme) I really think hard about it before any commitment is to be made. Another factor in my LEGO preferences are that I prefer sets more catered to adults; specifically, they usually lack minifigures. I have nothing against minifigures, in fact I love putting them together. But, the majority of sets I find myself attracted to are minifigure free. So...Going Modulars would bring me into the world of minifigures and everything that entails. Again, this isn't a bad thing. The problem is the price of said modulars. At $150+ a pop it's relatively expensive. It also requires lots of space to display that at this very moment I don't have much of. I would also have to consider not trying to acquire the really expensive modular who's name has escaped me at this moment. My second group of LEGO I was considering was trains. I wouldn't be trying to get them all, it would be a "theme" type of thing. I would focus only on locomotives/train-cars based on "real-life" examples. Like the Sante-Fe or Maersk. the obvious hangup here is that it's more expensive than the modulars, but there are less of them to acquire. But acquiring a Sante-Fe Locomotive and mail-car and passenger car (the same set with two different builds) would cost me quite a bit, something like 4-5 modulars I would think. Same with the BNSF line. I don't think I would be setting up a running track, just enough track to display them. I would consider adding the Horizon Express to this "theme" since it has "advanced building techniques" involved and resembles real trains well enough. I would forgo the City line trains that make use of large non-brick build parts and is more for running as a moving train. Third option is going deeper into the Creator series. Specifically: Maersk Triple-E, Taj-Mahal, Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House and the Tower Bridge (which I may acquire regardless of what direction I go). These are also expensive, but you seem to get a lot more pieces for your money. These sets more fit in with my Architecture interest. To sum it up... 1. Modulars because of building difficulty and they'll keep me building/occupied. 2. Trains because I think they're so well crafted and true to their real-life likeness and my dad likes trains which has rubbed off on me a bit. 3. Creator Expert to sort of continue in the Architecture direction I've been heading in. Although to be honest it would be nice for a change... Sorry for the god-awful wall of text... Thoughts? -Robert1 point

The only thing on personal preference I don't care for is the Turtle minifigures themselves but as for everything else including all the people characters and builds, I do like them. In any case, I am still a firm believer of the cartoon based ones if anything just for being more based on one of the actual animated shows. I didn't think I would but here I am with almost the entire second wave TMNT sets where all I am missing is Shredder's Lair and the Turtle Sub. Ha.1 point

Perhaps my memory is a little foggy but I just do not remember "a lot of people" finding The Zombies at any sort of discount. I think most were lucky to find any at all with the way how they kept disappearing off shelves. I recall a few members saying they had better luck purchasing The Orc Forge with a slight sale.1 point

I still think Daily Bugle Showdown is the one to jump on right now. I know it's not impacted by these DC sets, but I have this itching feeling that it will disappear quick in the next few weeks. It's almost gone at all retailers, except for TRU. It will disappear quietly, like Hulk Helicarrier and Wolverine Chopper. Get them while you can. Amazon.com and KMart.com are the places to get it for under $40.1 point

my favorite "bags" to store no box / loose sets are the same ones i use when mailing sets (in a shipping box of course). i use a felt tip perm marker to write the set name and # on the outside. another envelope can be used for instructions. these usps, fedex, etc... envelopes are "tough". for new / sealed sets, i don't use anything another than making sure they are stacked properly on shelving units.1 point

While we are on box art, and manual art. Printing and fulfillment is my day job. Inventory SKU control for a multi-billion dollar company is a big deal. It does not mean updating artwork on a manual or box can't be done, if you want to it can be. But what you have to understand is the part # on the manual or box will change and you will have to pay your artistic staff to update it, your printing company for new proofs, and then the job is a revision and not a reprint so it all costs more. Then the SKU # changes and you have to put in a supercession trail for your manufacturing plants and then they have to have adjusted build orders. It may sound simple. It is not. You can hire staff to manage all the aspects and then do this. It is not a problem. The steps are many but they are straight forward in a good manufacturing and inventory control company. But is it worth it? I think not. That is on top of then people thinking they are getting different versions of sets and market confusion from box changes etc. If I was Lego, I would do exactly what they are doing.1 point
