  1. I'm at a lose this morning. This shouldn't be affecting me, but it is. I've watched Tony Gwynn play since he was a rookie. I followed his entire career. I bought a ticket to the game in Montreal, where he hit his 3,000th hit (I didn't attend...I just guessed and bought a ticket for the game). I attended what was supposed to be his last game (the schedule got rearranged after 9/11). I booked my hotel and made plane reservations months before he was elected to Hall of Fame. I was there with 100,000 other people to see his Induction to the Hall of Fame. I had the honor of meeting him on numerous occasions. From autograph signings here in San Diego, to driving down the freeway and waving at him, to just giving a "hey Tony" when he was shopping at the mall with his kids. I don't believe in sports herpes, but man, Tony was *my* sports hero. He went to my alma mater. He coached at my alma mater. He was the best player on my favorite team, in my favorite sport. I wore #19 whenever I played beer league softball. Tony was my guy.

  5. Speak of the devil and he shall appear. Hit the motherlode on Friday and just now getting around to talking about it. As I'm driving to the RCS I get my weekly PC points email which has personalized offers of bonus points based on my past history. For the first time ever, I get a toy related offer (most of them are food related since RCS is primarily a grocery store). On top of the 20% discount and the 13% no tax, I get $8 in points for every $40 I spend on toys. That's another 20%!!! So I get to the store and pick up a couple of random Star Wars sets worth $80 and figure I'll come out just under $40 total. By chance I see a skid of boxes and lego sets down the aisle waiting to be unloaded. And there they were. 7 Wolverine Chopper sets in pristine condition! I haven't seen this set on a retail shelf anywhere since February. I sold 4 of them recently for between $50 and $75 each. I do the quick mental math as a formality only because there's no question I'm taking them all. I get to the cash and it gets even better. Retail price being $25, they're on CLEARANCE for $11 each!!!! Plus all the above discounts!!! 7 of these gold mines at about $6 each will make me close to a 1000% instant profit at current levels. Best. Score. Ever. (For me).

  6. Growing up in San Diego, Gwynn was my baseball idol as well. I remember leaving games and seeing Tony and his brother on the 15 in his ride with the "Padre19" vanity plate. He was awesome.

  8. Thanks jaisonline, I've contacted them regarding a bulk discount, waiting to see what they say. I do want to say that anyone should feel free to help out or provide suggestions. While I don't mind running the group buy, I certainly am fine with anyone wanting to take over part/all of it or give advice for improvement, whatever is best for all of us. I agree there is room in the $2.50 for savings. I went with that based on a $1.93 minimum charge for First Class Parcel and an estimated $0.57 to cover padded envelopes, tape, and labels. If there is a cheaper way such as getting the envelope rate instead of parcel, that would be great. I didn't want to go the paper envelope and a stamp route for fear of everyone receiving empty envelopes with holes in them.

  10. Thank you for the opinions everyone! Ended up pulling the trigger on it. I'm a fan of the Clone Wars series so it's attractiveness has increased for me as time has gone on. I'll check TRU over the weekend and see if they have budged on the price. Last I was there it was slightly above MSRP Still salty over the 4th haha I couldn't decide on a third set to get in addition to the Vizsla and Malevolence and I didn't want duplicates but I wanted the Revan figure, by the time I got the third item in my bag, it was too late. 13. I would go for it at $96 if you want to a sealed version. They are becoming harder and harder to find in at a good price every day. If you happen to find a cheaper one, after you bought one at $96, sell it and you could make some money.

  14. Someone mentioned that _if_ (and it's a giant "if") your local TRU has them in stock, then they are on clearance for $82. You can try asking via TRU online chat - they are able to look up store inventories in geographical areas

  15. You may have a chance to get it cheaper but if you really want a sealed one, that's not a bad price. And like matt1147 said, it's getting harder to find now. They were 1/2 price on the May the 4th weekend at SAH but supplies only lasted a very short time.

  16. that's a tough question because it was readily available for large discount (I've heard as low as $54.00) last year...of course, not that it's "gone" I wouldn't think you could find it cheap anymore unless you really get lucky at some out-of-the-way store. If you don't mind it being used, maybe you can score a cheaper one on Ebay. For example, this one sold on June 1: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEGO-Star-Wars-The-Malevolence-9515-/221448927146?pt=Building_Toys_US&hash=item338f6277aa

  17. 10227 B-Wing, my first starship UCS build. I had a few of these stashed, and I always meant to crack one open to build, I'm considering it a Father's Day gift to myself. Taking my time and enjoying the build, getting through a bag a night before bed to wind down. It's a fun build, even though it's repetitive. The B-Wing is one of my favorite fighters from Star Wars, always liked the unique shape of it.

  19. Haha, looks great...yeah my son has been pretty reasonable (surprisingly) with making time for his other Lego stuff, playing outside, JK school work and other activities. Nice to have some balance but I'm sure he would be alright staying up all night so we can get to the escalator part/build sooner! Mom doesn't know this yet but I project a PetShop build in Sept and Parisian Rest in Dec

  21. I am taking this approach of performance with the Pet shop and town hall. I am at 10 of each, and before I go all in I want to see how the GE does relative to EOL. This market is changing and it can be too easy to go all in, buy everything and not "roll with the punches" so to speak.

  24. Started on the GE this past weekend with my son...I help him find the pieces, than we separate the bricks needed for the page so he can look at the instructions to know where to put the pieces. He's only 4.5yrs old so would certainly be overwhelming if I didn't help parse out the bricks needed for each page/step haha. Still working on the first floor and many, many pieces left on #1 bags...he's looking forward to building the curtain section for the man buying pants tonight I first predicted it'll take about 1wk to build the GE together, but looks like 2-3 wks now as he's building it himself page by page and having fun. I was tempted to 'sneak build' some pages myself but he would notice for sure!

  30. 79006 - The Council of Elrond and 9471 - Uruk-hai Army. Building the Council was fairly quick and I do like the royal motif all the earthy tones give it. My only complaint is the bizarre 'play' feature that makes little sense let alone hardly works where the Eye of Sauron makes the floor flip up or at least that is what it was supposed to do. I almost slam the trigger and the floor barely nudges upwards. Regardless I got this for the colors and characters both features of which are nice. The shades of the leaves could work well in an autumn setting I think. One last note that you can't tell from the box, Elrond's cape is actually double sided where one side is dark red while the inside is flesh tone. On to the Uruk-hai Army, I have wanted to put this together for a long time since I bought it. It really is a fantastic army builder with a wall that can connect on into infinity with more like itself and four baddies storming the place. Only quirky thing after the wall is built, I felt like "Huh, thought it was bigger" but I still love it all the same. The big mobile crossbow looks fantastic but unfortunately the firing mechanism for the flick missiles is not. I mean it essentially works; they just don't go far at all. If anything the flick missiles sort of drop in front of the thing like a limp wristed softball toss. Still the set is the perfect army building set which in itself can be a problem. With these army builders, you build one then want to build another ....and another ....and another ....and another and.... Well, I'm working my way up to the big boys like Helm's Deep but first next up is The Orc Forge. :D

  32. It's too bad there are very few bricks in medium azure. That would look elegant I think but the tan color of Olivia's House would have also looked nice. Oh right, someone converted Olivia's House into a modular if you're curious.

  34. 9470 - Shelob Attacks. This is yet another set where you just need to say "The heck with it", buy it, and build it. I mainly wanted it for Gollum but now that I put the spider together I can't say enough just how friggin' awesome this is! Shelob is BIG for sure and pretty flexible. You know what makes the spider even more awesome? Having it hang down from the top tower and right on the front of my Haunted House. Just pay attention to the part of the instructions where you need to build the legs because for me the booklet was wrong in one spot. It displayed the middle leg portion starting with the 1x2 joint connecters then a 1x4 plate and 1x2 tile on top when it should be starting with the 1x4 plate first then the joint connectors and finally 1x2 tile on top. Basically how it looks on the box is correct. Also built 79005 - The Wizard Battle which is fine. The throne is all fancy-like, the Eye of Sauron minifigure head is cool, and the crystal balls in translucent yellow are nice and should be useful in other projects.

  41. My family bought me Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! for my birthday last week. I finished building it today at lunch (working at home.. extended lunch ). It's pretty cool even if it does deviate quite a bit from the traditional space Lego sets. There are a lot of technic pins and modern building techniques but lots of traditional pieces too. I might just have to pull out my old space lego... I've been holding out on the kids.

  46. First sets I bought with no intention of quick-flipping were 2 Grand Emporiums. I have a couple of Live Stars I got just before the no-discounts policy went into effect which are at this point long term investments, even though I wasn't thinking of them as such when I bought them over a year ago. *Sigh*. (It only took a year, but I'm finally at the point where I'm actually investing...next thing you know, I'll be making snide remarks about quick-flipping low lifes LOL)
