  1. I have a guy trying to extort a partial refund because I sent him a lego set. In new condition. That wasn't built. "Not what the picture shows". Let me repeat that for the people in back. I have a guy trying to extort a partial refund because I sent him a lego set. In new condition. That wasn't built. "Not what the picture shows". Yeah, the new defect thing has me scared because of people like this.

  3. After 2 years of waiting, I finally used some of my profits toward a 10179. It's an open box non-special edition set with a very good to excellent conditioned manual. Was able to pay under Brickpicker and Bricklink values. Honestly, I wasn't ready for the 27 pound box that FedEx delivered. I wasn't home but a neighbor signed for it so that meant, your's truly carried this heavy beast 1/4ths of a block. I did a quick inspection and everything looked good enough. The key elements were there. I'm estimating a 3 week build since this will be done only during my spare time (usually when everyone is sleeping). I also decided to use the downloaded PDF version of the instructions on my iPad to limit wear on the manual. Plus, I like being able to zoom in when needed. 5. One thing caught my eye: under the new "defect" rating seller cancellations will count against us. Right now, if a buyer asks me to cancel the transaction, I simply cancel it for them, they accept, I get my fees back, no harm done. If those "seller initiated cancellations" are now going to count against me, that's annoying. I'm signed up for the Thursday seminar, so hopefully either I or someone will be able to ask that question. What they NEED is buyer initiated cancellation requests, as on Amazon, and they've needed it for awhile now. (OTOH, I do LIKE that seller initiated cancellations will count against the yahoos who didn't get the price they wanted at auction, or who don't have the item in hand.)

  6. I just sold a car on eBay for the first time. With my hundreds of experiences of selling Legos and miscellaneous items, none of them compare to the frustration of selling a car. I sold it three times before a buyer actually paid. She bought it for $9900. So many stupid messages: 1. "too many miles, not worth more than $7000" really? Strange, I've turned down 8 offers for $9000, but since you said it's not worth more than $7k, I guess you can have it! 2. "seems fishy, I'm not touching that with a 10 foot pole." This was a random out-of-nowhere email. Okay, um, thanks for letting me know you're NOT going to buy my car. Maybe you should let everyone on ebay know that you're not buying something from them." 3. "you're asking too much. [offers $7k] You should list it as auction to see what it's worth" I'm asking too much? you're offering too little. Maybe you should offer me $20,000 to see how much I'll take for it. 4. "I'm a college student and don't have much money" No. You may not buy a used MERCEDES-BENZ and say you're short on money. you'll be out of money after the first minor repair. Buy a honda. 5. "will you trade?" Yes, I will trade my car for your money. No, I won't trade my car for your older, crappier, cheaper car. All of my lego sales combined havent been as frustrating as this was. I'd like to go back to all the idiots and say, "in your face, I sold it for the amount I wanted!" Alas, I always stick with my police, "thanks for your interest, but I am not able do that at this time." I'd hate for someone to ruin my perfect feedback. Rant Over. At least when the buyer gets the car, she can't say it's not built as in the picture. that's just ridiculous.

  14. Wow, what a spirited discussion. I've only been to Lego store twice, distance makes it hard. I'm not defending Lego policy or people who abuse their position but, I do take issue with the "go nowhere job" title. I was brought up being taught I should always have respect for a honest, hard working man(women) weather they running the country or cleaning toilets. As you should have theirs. No worker should be looked down on even if they don't share your aspirations.

  16. pictures, as promised... Flo's V8 Cafe, features sensor lighting (disabled for now, so it will not drain batteries over time) Ghost Train / Mad Scientist's Lab (pardon the quality, I didn't want to remove the protective wrap) Features push-button and sensor lighting, white total illumination and a light show highlighting certain parts in different colours Olivia's house, features push button lighting and a turntable to rotate the house. Sorry, couldn't resist to add a somewhat dramatic backdrop to the ever so peaceful world of Lego Friends...

  21. A couple of weeks ago a small toy store here in town ("here" meaning in Germany) went out of business, because their lease wasn't renewed at a bearable rate. When they had their final sales I went to pick up some Lego, part for investment, part for my collection, I stumbled across a bunch of display cases with price tags on them. Last year I had asked the boss at their head store (they belonged to a very small chain) what happened to these cases if they were replaced and he told me they (the cases) were going back to Lego and they (the store) were not allowed to sell them. Looks like this either changed (unlikely) or they didn't care anymore. Bottom line: I picked up three of them, Flo's V8 Cafe and Ghost Train / Mad Scientist's Lab for my own collection and Friends Olivia's House for my daughter. The Monster Fighters case was brand new, still in protective wrap. Asking price was 50% of MSRP of the included sets and I successfully asked the store clerk to apply that week's 30% final sale rebate. I still have to find a nice place to display them (or at least to store them until then). They also had a life sized Dirk Nowitzki on display, I asked if it was for sale, but I was told that Lego would be picking this one up. The store could have kept it. For 6000 Euros...

  25. Legitimate question. Ebay reaches a LOT more people than sellings locally. It is more hassle, But I got $995 more for selling it on ebay than I would've for selling it on craigslist ( listed on CL too, and never got an offer above $9K). Trading it in would've gotten me about $7500. So it was worth it to me for almost $1K. barely. And yes, I live in Texas, so there's a lot more trucks out here than Mercedes

  31. I was born in 1991 and got my first Lego set in 1993. Much of my childhood correlates with many of the sets that came out between 1993-1998, since I would always stare at them in catalogs knowing my parents would never spend that much on a set. When I got my first job at age 16 I made sure I finally picked up all of these that I wanted as a kid. Seeing this thread, thinking about the top sets, and looking up photos of them made me a little teary-eyed. Times were much simpler back then....and most of these sets were much simpler in terms of the build as sets are now today. But these hold the top 10 sets in my book. 1. 6277 Imperial Trading Post (#1 favorite theme of all time) 2. 6286 Skull's Eye Schooner (debatable which ship between 6285/6286 I like more) 3. 6090 Royal Knight's Castle 4. 6285 Black Seas Barracuda 5. 6195 Neptune Discovery Lab (#2 favorite theme of all time....this theme was never very popular, and the sets are still cheap) ) 6. 10237 Tower of Orthanc (huge LOTR fan, and especially love the ents) 7. Airport Shuttle 8. 4558 Metroliner (best 9-volt set ever) 9. 6983 Deep Freeze Defender (Ice Planet/Spyrius/Space Police is my favorite theme after Pirates and Aquazone) 10. 6769 Fort Legoredo (my first $100 Lego set..parents found it very cheap and bought it for my brother and I for christmas one year) Honorable mentions: 6278 Enchanted Island 6350 Pizza To Go (best $20 set of all time) 10152 Maersk Ship (or the new Maersk ship, which may be better) 6598 Metro PD Station (Playing Lego Island on PC as a kid helped cement this set in my mind) 9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep (again, huge LOTR fan, and fantastic set) 10214 Tower Bridge (visited London this past summer....looks like a great set) 6190 Shark's Crystal Cave (at one point in time as a kid probably my favorite set)

  33. I guess LotR is just not that big in UK? In US I can't imagine people returning the orc forge and pirate ship if bought with good discount. I mean its a ship with tons of minifigs from a great franchise. I'm not saying big profit margin but if that is not one of the safer bets then I don't what is.

  35. I think we should not use abbreviations, even more so with set numbers. The purpose is to save time but often we end up with at least one more post asking what it is. With set numbers, readers often have to look up the number to find the set name. Posts like this will make it hard for everyone: "Picked up 2 BE from TRU today, saw a small discount on MC2 but passed" Lego maintains 200 sets each year, how are we going to keep up?
    1 point
  36. We do have nice list of abbreviations in the Frequently Asked Questions area. I am sure we can add a few of these listed here, but the bottom line is, even if you build a list here, 2 months down the road someone will ask the same questions and it will start all over again.

  40. Awesome, I think you're right ! And that explains why it seems there's a larger space between the studs. A less clownish version: It needs some stickers.

  41. Because my LDD is not working at the moment, I cannot show you exactally how this works, but I am seeing headlight bricks at the bottom. The pinball machines will not stick to the ground because the studs are upside down. The front is only one stud deep and the back is two. Here is a pattern for the bottom (from front to back): 2X1 grill 2 headlight bricks next to each other 2X1 brick 2 more headlight bricks next to each other 2X2 plate Put one stud on each of the front headlight bricks and put two studs on each of the back headlight bricks. The rest should be easy to figure out.

  42. Welcome Darkside2SIX, I am new too, with kids, and in Washington State, thou I live in the part down in the south eastern were it is sunny most of the time. And thanks for your service (funny, how much more thankful we become as parents, for the sacrifices our young service people make, or maybe it's me, but as a father of daughters I am so thankful to be able to raise them in a free country). A few things I have learned in the last 10 days: 1. people here will help you if you put in a little effort 2. Out of all the places I have gone to learn, I have learned the most by far here at brickpicker. 3. I am by far not even close to being able to give advice on what to buy, but these sets seem to get good feedback A) 10220 T1Campervan 10211 Grand Emporium C) 10214 Tower Bridge D) 10225 R2D2 E) Possibly 10237 Tower of Orthanic 4. With my kids I am finding that I am trading or selling my old stuff for ones that I can enjoy with my girls. (they like Trains, Mindstorm, Technics and friends( they are not really into the princess Lego, but love the Princesses)) 5. I plan on parting out about 10-15 sets a month (selling the figures) to get free or low cost bricks to build with. They want to make a blue, pink, and yellow train next. ?6. After surviving baseball cards, beanie babies, pong and so many more. The biggest thing I have learned is to pick one. Be a collector or be a dealer/seller (just a personal observation) I hope that at least some of this will be helpful, good luck and remember "A kid without Lego's, is a future trouble maker! So make sure the kids your kids play with have Lego's at any cost, you are only as strong as your weakest link, and there is nothing weaker than a child with out Lego" Sent from my tired self up to late using Brickpicker...

  43. Lego as a company has every right to make policies about their product. If they decide to make a policy that you are only supposed to receive a single promotion per household it seems like they should have the right to do that. Now, it doesn't seem like they are enforcing that rule very well, but you can hardly get so bent out of shape and indignant if a lower level employee decides to uphold a policy that has been handed down to him from the powers that be.

  44. I think that the main goal here is to start a new category of UCS Lego sets. Adding more detail to the set and most likely also adding more cost to the individual set. It sounds like the booklet will be more of a book with building instructions rather than the magazine or spiral bound instructions that came with prior UCS Star Wars sets. We may see other genres of USC including the Marvel sets, maybe a LOTR set, who knows, there might also be a Ninja Turtles USC for the Shellraiser. I think this won't hurt the sets at all, and we might be in for some sweet surprises!! Tracy S.

  45. I think we need to take a step back, y'all want someone to lose their job because you don't agree with their interpretation of company policy? For a second put yourself in their shoes. How many excuses do you think they have heard to get extra freebies? How many times have they been yelled at by corporate about enforcing selling limits? Or been chewed out by angry parents because they don't have the one set that little Jimmy just has to have? Did the guy act like an ass? Probably, but there are two sides to this story. Most of y'all seem upset that Lego is making it harder to game the system, thus more fair for the average consumer. LEGOs goal is not to make you money. It's to sell children's toys to children's parents. Fill out that comment card if you want, but unless you've spent some time working that kind of retail you have absolutely no idea of the kind of crap they put up with on a daily basis. And for the record I do NOT have a ponytail.

  48. There are a few things that hurt sets when they are refreshed. Newer sets are available at retail for far cheaper prices and usually are more morden looking (e.g. maybe more SNOT, newer elements, diff colors). People want sets for minifigs and special things included (e.g. maxi-sized minifigs). When a set is refreshed, most people stop looking at the brick elements included in the older sets and focus on the minifigs. If those minifigs are also refreshed, prices will further decrease because the older set is now looked as regular elements with just minifigs. sellers begin unloading the original set but unlike the past, they are competing against other sellers doing the dame thing, Let's take the 2006 Batman 1 Batcave (7783) . This set is far larger than 6860. (It also contains the still exclusive Alfred minifig. Before 2012, 7783 was selling consistently for $350 used and $550-$600 new / sealed.). After 6860 as available for 6 months, 7783 prices fell too $225-$300 used while new sets hovered around $425 with rare instances of $500+. The sets bottomed out at $175 used and $425 new when Mr, Freeze was refreshed along with another Robin and Penguin. Prices have been slowly climbing again only due to 6860 being sold-out at times and the Alfred minifig. Additionally,, more 7783s were parted out than before so less are available for sale so supply vs. demand swing it's way again for a while but only after a deep depreciation. The Alfred minifig is still helping hold the value, This is just one example where a refreshed hurt the original's value big-time. If not for 6860, most used 7783 sets would be fetching at least $450 today even with the Robin and Penguin refreshes. A more drastic example would be what the 2010 Slave 1 did to the original's value. The older Jabba's Palace can now be had for a song and dance. Even the superior designed 6210 Sail Barge is selling for far less than 1 year ago (used sets couldn't be had for under $200 in late 2012. I still can

  50. As the original poster, I just want to clarify that I am not cursing the name of this set for not appreciating faster. The word "patience" keeps being thrown around. I am not at all impatient about where this set is at, and I'm not losing sleep over the fact that it hasn't appreciated more. Since some of the recently retired sets, particularly the Hulk 6868 have enjoyed rapid gains, I was just looking for reasons why Weathertop is seeing fairly slow growth in comparison. The whole point of this topic was to get opinions on why it isn't appreciating quicker, not to get lectures on being patient. I don't mean any rudeness here. I am just trying to keep the thread on track for what it was originally intended to do. Thank you to all of you who have weighed in and pointed out some of the factors that I have overlooked that are very likely contributing to this situation. -Aaron-
