  2. Hello! My best friend is manager of a comic shop in Chicago. I have collected over the years as well. I will say up front that the places that "grade" comics with AFA values are pretty much a waste unless you have something that is REALLY valuable. They will charge you a lot to grade and unless it is a rare item it usually doesn't help sell. On the other hand, it seems every person is different when it comes to determining the grades. Even my friend, who deals in comics, says when he gives someone a grade, they could go somewhere else and they might grade it totally different. Things to look for: 1. Is the cover in good shape? No tears, creases, or spots is best. 2. Pages - Any rips or folds of the pages? If not, proceed to next. 3. Are the staples firm and not loose? If your book meets all these criteria, then i would say you have a near mint book. I had my friend show me what constitutes a perfectly mint book. It was the same criteria i just wrote but he also checked for fingerprints and oils on the cover. Corners had to be perfect and the book should have been bagged and boarded the instant it was received. On that note, if you are trying to sell, it's best to bag and board them if you don't already. I have sold a lot in the past and i usually just say they are near mint in my description but that they have not been professionally graded. If you are using ebay then the pictures will do the talking. I just noticed you are in the Chicago area. You should give my friend a call. They just made a move of the store from Calumet City to Crown Point, Indiana. They are Amazing Fantasy Comics. They've been around for more than 20 years. They will be at the old location for a few more days then open next week at the new store. The old number is 708-891-2260 and the new number will be 219-661-1500. Ask for Dave. He will be able to help you with any questions you might have. I hope i have been of some help.

  7. Why are so many wondering if this particular set was overproduced? It doesn't even make any sense. You may as well ask if every other set that was ever made was overproduced. The real question is how many of these are put away for resale in the next few years. There weren't more of these produced in 1 year than are produced of plenty of other sets that were or have been available for 2+ years.

  8. Well since my name is poping up alot about why I buy 40 - 60 sets of one item. Now I am not a Collector, and never stated that i had more sets than most of you guys, but when I started buy lego it was always for investment, and once I got a Wholesale account well buying 20-30 and even 50 cases of the 6210 Orginal Jabba Sail barge, 3 to a case thats 150 Sets, 25 cases of the 6211 Star Destroyer, and in 2010 and 2011 the 6210 was selling for $300-400 and since wholesale was about $50 a piece i made tons a money, I had plenty cases of all the Harry Potter Castles, Trains, etc. What about the First batman, well with the Batcave and batmobile, More big money, Indiana Jones sets, Plenty cases of the Snow Speeder, Cloud City cases, and the 7676 GunshipThere are plenty more, as for the Exclusives, I had about 8-10 Big falcons 10179, still have Statue of Liberty's, 10 Carousels, 12 Eiffer Towers, 10134 Y-wings, 10143 Death Stars and many other, take the Imperial Flagship & Remote At At, Why everybody did load up on these, plus many of the other Exclusives, If I would of not sold any of these sure I would have many more sets, but with about the 1100 or 1200 sets I have, plus the older big buck Exclusives I have are at my sons house, and thats about 200 pure gold sets, and how many of you wish you had 50 Imperial shuttles, 50 each of the Black Pearl and Queen Revenge, and 40 Potter 4842 Castles, 50 Potter Diagon Alley's I wish I would have gotten100 of all these sets. Plus I still have 20 AT AT 8129 sets, 15 Dropships 10195, 15 -10198 sets. Now you guys look at all your sets now how many of you say to yourself why did I buy all those cheap sets that will never be worth much, Now I have had about 20 guys Email me and say they wish they didn't buy half the cheap sets that they did, and I am sure there are plenty more that wish they didn't buy half the stuff. Now if its for your Collection thats great. And on the haunted Houses, well I had 40 last week, since then I got 11 more. Now take 98% of Exclusives from the last 7 Years they are pulling in the big money. So anybody thinks the HH,TB,R2-D2,Ewok Village, And the Death Star and SSD, and other ones that you can buy now are going to regret not having as many as you can afford, Most say I will wait til they are retiring, well thats OK if you are only buying 1-5 sets say, but if you want alot waiting is a bad idea, say the Death Star or SSD were retiring Dec, how many of you could afford to buy 10 or more, and Like I said before these 2 are going to rise fast in price once they do retiring. So I have made plenty of money and always will on the sets I have and will keep buying. So I don't care about that some of you guys like to make comments about what I buy, and when I get the sets I box them up, but I still have a few hundred still not boxed up yet. So my advice you want to make big money and can afford to buy and wait, Watch on what you buy. "And Pay Cash, or if you charge it be sure you can pay the whole bill off when it comes, or you will loose money big time with finace charges.'' Ed

  10. From what I can see you have some parts to a wide variety of sets: Angler Attack Link Passenger Plane Link you have the wings for the set but nothing else Fire Hammer vs. Mutant Lizards Link Aerial Defense Unit Link T-Rex Hunter Link Maybe Passenger Plane (different one) Link City Corner ( you only has the bus) Link Jungle Cutter Link (you are missing some pieces for it) That is all I can identify from the pictures. Enjoy.

  11. I don't think ED comes off wrong at all. He has been selling Legos since 1998 or later and has a lot of experience and wisdom. I think he enjoys helping people out and believes what he has to say is meaningful. If I was confident in my lego inventment strategy I would be confident and consistent in what I said as well but I am a noob at Lego inventment so I keep quiet. Emazers, thanks for all your advice on these forums. Darrell

  13. Ed, you owe no one an explanation of anything you do. Whatever works for you is great. If people like it, good, if people don't, its their choice. When you sell for $10 million, make sure you put something in the Brickpicker cookie jar.

  15. Yes, there are 4 stores total all owned by the same guy. I believe either Lori or Garrett runs Tinley Park. All of the other stores originally branched off from the Calumet City store. It was the first. Kinda sad to see it close. But the area is just terrible now and sales dropped off significantly. So they either had to move where the money is or close up altogether. I don't know if the other stores will be buying as much back issues since they have been established for a long time. But Dave told me that since they are starting fresh in the Crown Point store, he would probably need some back issues for the bin. They are all great people. Besides being my friend since kindergarden, i have been getting my comics and books and collectibles with them for the last 25 years. Yeah, it seems digital has put a real hurt on the business as a whole. I don't think it will ever go away completely because there are too many old school people like me that would rather have a tangible book in hand rather than a digital copy. In order to survive now though, you have to carry a lot of other entertainment-related stuff to compensate. Dave says he makes quite a bit now off of the Heroclix gaming stuff and tournaments. If you try to rely on the comics and books only, you will sink really fast. When you call Dave, tell him John from Tennessee sent you. LOL Hope he can help you out!

  17. I would list some of them locally too. You get a big time collector, you might be able to offload a lot of those $5 for $2-3 each which might be worth not having to pack them, etc.

  22. No problem. I buy bulk lots and sell the sets off separately. It's. been reasonably profitable. But I have ended up with about 9kg of spare bricks, new and old in varying condition. So I might have what you need, send me a message with your requirements. I sold about 250g of vintage wheels last week, for a whole 99p . Someone got a bargain.

  25. So I just bought an Indiana Jones set lot on ebay of sets 7621,7622,7626,7627 and am wondering if you think it was a good deal or not from an investing standpoint. I'm thinking of keeping them anyway but what do you guys think? Sorry if this is the wrong thread, this is my first post and still haven't fully got my head around the site Thanks guys Lego lot: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LEGO-4-INDIANNA-JONES-7621-7622-7626-7627-COMES-WITH-BOOKS-/321231893668?autorefresh=true&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=4Ot%252BVQaW9VBhK62asw%252FsrQH0Elc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

  26. TRU will add fine print somewhere saying the larger sets are "special priced" or some nonsense. The other sets will be jacked up so basically you save around 5%, which is a waste. In the good old days, you could actually get something worthwhile at BOGO, but it is a waste of time now.

  27. Most of my collection went to local shops, but I did have some luck selling some on ebay. All my stuff was from the 90s. So yes, I had a long run of Spawn, and no, none of that fantastic Image stuff is worth anything yet. I think you'll get decent views with 80s stuff... Maybe start with a BIN close to book value, and see how much attention it gets. I listed most of mine as auctions so I could get a sense of using ebay, plus they all sold for understandable prices. Shipping is risky... Definitely bag and board, and pack well. jal's suggestion is sound, too. If you really want to just unload some comics, start at local shops. In my experience, they are avid buyers who pay respectably. However, they will cherry pick your stash, which could leave you with incomplete runs and boxes of $2 comics. My leftovers went to a secondhand bookstore; I was surprised to see the buyer there actually research some values. She paid me premiums for the best ones, and about .55 each for the rest.

  30. Most of the knights (parts) are from Knight's Kingdom 2000 (King Leo's knights, like this and this), but I also see two or even 3 (top parts) from recent Kingdoms sets 2010 (this and this and this). 3rd guy top row is partly Wolfpack knight . The helmet on him is from different sets, could be Crusaders. 4th guy top row is Black falcon (wrong helmet). 3rd guy 2nd row and 2nd guy 3rd row are from Black Knights, could be this set. But helmets are wrong. I just recognize torsos.

  32. The only reason I posted the Sale paper is because it has Lego sets up to $399.99 on sale for $319.99, so it says all Star wars sets, So we will see if that includes the Exclusive and Hard to Find sets, And with Lego telling Amazon, target and walmart no sales on Exclusives, we will just have to see what happens, And some Toys r us store do carry the Hard to find. Mainly the High end stores.and Toys R Us does have the Vampire Castle on sale Nov 3-23 For $80

  34. $35 in shipping or so. I would say $40 to be sure. Then you add fees - if you aren't a power or top seller, the equation would be $400 / .87 + $40 = 499.75 So $500 is where you break even.

  35. I would just take good pictures and state 'as is' in all the auctions with no grading guarantees. Sounds like a hassle all around.

  43. Talk all you want about the 41999 and where to buy one or its investment potential, but we really don't need to discuss if Mark the Carpet Man has a Ferrari or not. If you want to discuss a how a person can impact the market by buying multiples, I can see the relevance.
    1 point
  44. So I cant help but wonder why Mark is stockpiling so many crawlers. Here's a few ideas floating around in my head: 6. After a lifetime of searching, hes finally found a way to get into the Guiness Book of World Records. 5. He's looking for the crawler with license plate number 763, because thats his favorite number. 4. He was the runner up in the contest to create the limited edition model, and he just hasn't gotten over the loss. He wants to wipe them off the face of the earth. 3. He has a terrible case of OCD. 2. He has a diabolical plan to take over the world and the crawlers (after some modification) will be his army. 1. He's really Santa Clause and hes gathering crawlers to give out to all the good kids on Christmas. (The not so good kids get mega blox) Or, I guess its could just be a plain old investment strategy. But wouldnt it be cool if he really was Santa????

  45. There is an awful lot of jealousy on this site. It's crazy. I could care less how much money he has or what he drives. What I care about is that he seems like a reputable guy who pays for what he buys. How about we focus on that? He is a really good buyer who hopefully won't see any of these silly posts or he will likely think we are all 12 year olds.
    1 point
  46. This Mark gentlemen might be a genius. A previous post said he owns a Ferrari. So he probably has millions bucks to work with. If he bought all 20,000 crawlers for $400 each, that would be $8 million. I doubt he'll buy them all, but he could certainly dominate the market, drying up supply and skyrocketing the price.
    1 point
  47. Yes i have talked to him quite a bit. I invited him to the site but it hasn't happened yet. He's a really nice guy. I am bullish on saying too much because we should probably try to respect the guys privacy outside of what he is buying right now with the 41999 but he definitely has other lego sets. And I get the feeling he knows what he is doing.
