Why does anyone build Lego? People derive satisfaction from knowing they built something. I'm sure Ed and Jeff feel this same fulfillment on a much larger scale through building Brickpicker. In my opinion, there's nothing more satisfying than knowing something you've built is being used and has had an impact on society, regardless of what niche it may fill.2 points

We are getting real close. Sometime over the next week we will probably release an update as to how it will work/cost for posting listings, rules of the site, a feature list of what you will be able to do with it and thoughts on how we think it will help your business. I am really looking to release it to the mods shortly to start using it and then may ask a few known eBay sellers to help try out a few features to make sure its working. The feature will definitely be live in October. I have a business trip to the UK at the end of this month and will want to take feedback I get from the mods/etc to make changes. We will then release to everyone else. While this has taken longer to do, I am actually very happy that it did. I personally like what I have done now much more than where it was quite a few months back. Hopefully everyone else will think so.2 points

7965 will never retire. There are too many sealed 9516s. And the sail barge is awful. Help me R2-D2, you're my only hope.2 points

Oh, many. I keep wanting to start one for my mini figs in my woodshop, but work keeps me away from investing in any amount of time. But, I believe you would have to test a few pieces out, if you were serious about a great display case. I would recommend trying Australian bloodwood, with something like walnut, or poplar with something like walnut or wenge. Check them out here: http://www.owlhardwood.com/products/lumber-products/imported-lumber/ though the pictures do not do a the wood justice. Check out some of the pictures a little ways down in this thread: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?149888-Wood-combinations-what-say-you That might give you some ideas, but, like I said, you should experiment since you are wanting to display a pretty large range of colors. My idea for a lighted shelf is a poplar back with either the bloodwood or red oak shelf. I am not sure how much contrast would be good for a minifigure... Anyway, going to a lumber store that sells some samples will let you try it out at home for a few dollars. Then you either go with a veneer or buy a few boards to make the shelf. I think I would rather just go with buying the boards, as veneering is a pain in butt for someone with little experience, like me. Home Depot sells the glass I will use for the case, but I would have to go to a place like Woodcraft or the Owl Lumber above for the boards. I think I could get all the pieces for $20 - $45.00 and put it together in a day. Since you have an expensive collection, you might even ask at the store that sells the lumber if they could point you to a local woodsmith to make it. I am sure you can get it made and put together for under 100.00, since it is a small shelf with a glass front. If you have a Woodcraft near you, that is where I would go. They have classes, and the teachers are pretty good craftsman and most likely will be happy to make you a display case. Now you got me excited about making mine! The only other thing I can think of to add is that you might want to make it modular or at least easily expandable for future additions.2 points

I spend roughly 100 hrs per year buying and selling. My day job is 20 x that unfortunately. I do not flip constantly. Just buy a set at roughly 25-30% discount online, hold it for a year, and sell it for 100% net profit. Most of those 100 hrs are reading these forums lol.1 point

Let's look at it another way. There is a cost to LEGO investing, unlike many other conventional forms of investing such as stocks/bonds/gold. I can buy shares of stock for $200 and see them appreciate to $6000 in 5 years and never lift a finger to do anything, but LEGO investing requires time, money and effort to attain those same levels. Of course anything is possible, but to say "very likely" is not fair or accurate in most cases if you consider your actual costs in obtaining that inventory. Most people have to pay taxes on the original sale and the secondary sale. Most people have to pay commissions or fee to sell an item. Most people have to pay for storage of items(shelves, rent space, etc..). Most people have to spend time listing and packaging items for sale. Most people have to pay for shipping materials and gas to go to shipping center. There are many hidden costs to LEGO investing that must be taken into consideration. Flipping multitudes of sets is a second job and if you really figure it out, maybe a poor paying one. My point is not to argue about how much people say they can make about flipping sets before they hit maximum value, my point is that when you have an exceptional set like this one, why treat it like another run of the mill set that you can make a quick profit on? A small $200 investment in this set will easily beat most of the other LEGO sets on the market in annual appreciation 2, 3, 4 or 5 years from now and it will continue to make money for you with no work IMO. Many people might disagree with me on the surface, but maybe in their hearts, they know I have a point and they should have kept their SE Crawlers. Sure, banking $200 is nice, but this set might easily bank you $600 in 2 years. To say you can turn $200 into $13,000 in 5 years is possible, but there are many, many hours invested into that and other hidden dollars as well. I would rather have my $1000 Crawler and all the extra time and money that was spent flipping sets. I do not want to seem like a Party Pooper, but I don't want people to think returns of 6000% in five years is easy or common. Flipping enough sets to make this sort of return is effort...a lot of it and should be considered in these discussions.1 point
-
Quite honestly, I don't think that's necessarily true. I started flipping sets just a couple months ago and if I had more time on my hands to focus on that I would probably reach those 40k in 5 years as well, even selling on eBay. I know at least one other member that may argue the same.1 point

First off I'm SUPER excited about this, but I think we need to build up the MoC crowd and the general collectors on this site more... especially when the Classifieds get launched. I've always been a collector first but I feel like an outsider will view the forums as giving the backseat treatment to those who aren't investing or reselling over all else. I can't speak to how many of those people lurk here, but that segment needs to be nurtured more if there is going to be a bigger market to sell these sets to. There are a ton of people, like myself, with a certain disposable income that will buy the older sets at their correct values because they can appreciate it displayed, playing with, etc. I would love to see an expanded MoC forum, or something similar, that could bring a whole new segment of people to THIS site instead of them going to the other ones... the other sites can't compare to the data/resources here on the investing side, but if you can get those people to bring their normal LEGO discussions from their message boards to here instead, I think the Classifieds idea can take off even more. A more diverse group of people, a better marketplace. I could be completely off here, as I have zero idea about the people who lurk and don't participate in the forums...1 point

Bought mine for $190 (Discover CB and no tax in my state). Sold for $400 after shipping (no fees). Already on to the next deal. I aim for 100% net profit each year. So after 5 years while this set may sell at $1k I will have already turned my $200 to close to $13k. Started out with $300 5 years ago and already have over $40k in inventory....I did not get there by sitting on sets for 5 years lol.1 point

I don't know - if it doesn't bring anything new to the table, why is it one of the most bought sets? Here are my thoughts on the three: 7965 Falcon - I did a blog about this one: http://community.brickpicker.com/blog/4/entry-399-lego-7965-millenium-falcon-is-it-an-investors-10179-remake/ Short answer, it definitely is better than the last one (that didn't do wonderfully). It is much bigger and the figures are great in it. Being the second biggest Flacon and having the biggest one be close to 3K makes me think this one will do decent enough. 12.5-15% CAGR or so. But there are definitely unknowns on when it will retire, and when the next one will come out. Not sure about it - but a lot of Walmarts did clearance them and none of mine got more. So it could be leaving us this year or early next. 9516 Jabbas Palace - I did a blog about this one as well: http://community.brickpicker.com/blog/4/entry-321-jabbas-palace-will-you-dine-for-eternity-at-the-bantha-buffet-or-will-the-chain-put-a-choke-hold-on-your-cash/ It is tremendously better than the original, again one of the most bought lego sets, and there is the controversy. I wish wish wish it had gone out back in March as it would have skyrocketed, but I think there is still a lot of potential. At the end of the day, it still had a somewhat limited run, a lot of investors are going to ignore it because they are afraid of how many were stocked up on previously, and the original has continued to do well. Plus the Rancor pit = money. I think this one could do 20-30% CAGR . Also, looking back at the controversy, the set rose to $175 within a few days. I think this shows its potential. I don't think investors were spending that on it, but maybe so? Jabbas Sail Barge - Guess what, it was in this blog :http://community.brickpicker.com/blog/4/entry-357-the-lego-star-wars-fall-wave-same-old-song-and-dance-part-2/ Retail price hurts this one. And its not exceptionally better than the first like JP. But, its still an iconic set, and it matches well with all the other Jabba sets - including the very good selling JP, rancor pit, skiff, etc. So in the end, it will have good returns, but I wouldn't pay more than $85ish for it, maybe lower to get the type of returns to make it worth it. If the set was $99 like it should be, I think you would see 20% CAGR, but at $120 it will be about 15% or lower. So the short answer, I think Jabba's Palace has the best. But EOL dates change everything. Only downsides I see are - no Jabba in new movies and high retail price.1 point

Get as much as you can, because this gentleman will be making money off of your Crawlers.. I believe this UK fellow is onto something regardless. He is calculating this set hitting $1000 or more. He might be right.1 point

Keep in mind many non-reseller/investor Lego fans like to see what their collections are "worth" with no intent to ever sell them. The total Brickfolio value should not be considered an estimate of current/future inventories.1 point

Falcon is great, but there are many versions, with more to come. It has also had a long shelf life, with no end in sight. Jabbas palace has only 1 previous version, which doesn't even compare with 9516 as far as quality. The palace will have a short shelf life, according to lego themselves ( eol after one year ). The controversy only adds to the mystique of this set. The verdict is still out on the barge. I say Jabbas palace, hands down.1 point

I like them both to be honest. The Baxter set cause of its exclusivity, good minifigs, and I actually think this is a great theme. Kind of like chima in a way: all the adults are discussing its merits while the kids are buying it up. My two boys LOVE TMNT....their cousins love them and their friends do too. With the GD, sometimes you just have to step back and say: Lego NAILED it on this set. The Golden Dragon is one of those sets. It's perfect in a lot of ways: nice price point, cool minifigures and the dragon is great as well. Bought both of these at toys r us and got a seaplane poly with each. Not the greatest deal...but oh well. Oh...but to answer your question directly, I would say Baxter. I have a sneaky feeling that TMNT will do well post eol...and this will be the set no one has.1 point

The real question I have is why so many of you sold this set so early? What is the rush to sell an exceptional set like this? This set is a keeper IMO...but what do I know?1 point

Where are the pilgrims? Whats that? No native Americans either? How is this supposed to be authentic? Actually it is pretty cool. For more authenticity there needs to be a drunk uncle and someone coming out of the closet in front of the whole family.1 point

I for one am all for it, and I don't see why anyone else who is sill holding a crawler wouldn't as well. This guy is just accelerating the inevitable. The way I see it, if he gets 19,995 Crawlers, and I have the other 5, then he's done all the work for me and my 5 will all be worth 4 figures minimum! Go random British guy!1 point

This is strange. If you can't afford something, don't buy it. Lego is for people with money. Go play with a cardboard box or something. I know I had loads of fun with boxes in my childhood.1 point

Thats what the public coupon is too I believe. So guys, what do you think about this: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=22711596 25% off those three sets. The sets themselves are hot price, but this isn't. If it accepts the coupon, pretty good deal.1 point

I'm not an experienced investor, but I'm working on it. I believe it will be a great investment polybag. The "friends" bedroom sets did very will. Buyers seem to enjoy anything that has to do with outfitting a room. A Thanksgiving table does well for that concept (even though it's not "Friends"). Is that a keg? Awesome if it is.1 point

I think the post(s) with the guys personal info shld be deleted. Let's have some common courtesy to fellow buyers/investors here. Geez do you want the guy to get hate mail from people with the misguided notion that there is anything wrong with buying 300 on the open market.1 point

I think Occam's Razor applies here. Lots of fun theories and questions, but the simplest explanation is probably it. They had a contest, produced a run of 20,000, and now they're done. The brains at Lego have probably already moved on to the next two or three limited edition ideas we can all get excited about in the future. Yes, they appear to be taking some steps to curb high volume resellers (or suspected resellers). But to think that they are going to rerelease 41999, a couple of months after it was released, requires a parlay of things to happen that are pretty unlikely. My 2 cents. Props to those who made money on it already. Those who are still holding, congrats, you'll probably make as much or more money in the future. Winners all around IMO.1 point

While I understand the concern about the charge backs and wanting to avoid the accounting hassle of telling the IRS that not all of that is profit etc. I am about to say something that will probably get me boo'd out of the building...I know this thread is not about how to avoid taxes but to avoid chargebacks but there are some who are interested in not getting a 1099 in the hopes of hiding their income. I don't recommend hiding any PROFITS from the IRS. It is illegal. No you probably won't get caught but to me, that is not the point. I am not an accountant and won't pretend to be but this article might help some...(It's about garage sales but you'll get the gist.) http://blogs.hrblock.com/2012/07/25/garage-sale-money-does-the-irs-need-to-know/ Taxes suck but so do tax cheats. If you don't like paying them, campaign for those who are trying to lower them. Sorry I don't mean to tell others how to do their business, I just thought it was important for those who are reading this thread know that taxes legally need to paid whether it is reported to the IRS or not. A good accountant will be able to advise you on how to keep your tax obligations to a min. (IE what kind of deductibles you can use etc.) Let the booing begin!!!1 point

Agreed. Seeing Lego like this makes my stomach queazy. I personally use mesh begs with very small holes to wash the dust off some of my sets. Then I rebuild, but that is the extent of it. Something like this almost looks as if it should be soaked in some sort of solution for a very long time. That and perhaps a scrub brush. I would try filling the sink, adding some soap and letting the elements sit for literally a couple hours. Loosen everything. Then it should come off much easier. Best of luck!1 point
-
To me it depends on what type of investor you are. If you like to ride the immediately EOL spurt and then sell and invest in something else about to go EOL go for it. If you are less sure, I think this set is still going to go much higher than now. If you are looking for $400 - I would put up a BIN for it and list that its mint 100 times in the listing and you will eventually get it.1 point
-
So I'm thinking it might be time to start selling this set. It has leveled off from its initial EOL spurt and boy did it hit the ground running. My thoughts are this, a theory is that older SW sets could see some significant growth when the new movies come out. I am thinking that any ships or scenes that are profiled in the new movies will be made by LEGO at that time regardless of whether or not they have been made already, so would any potential growth of the olders sets be counter acted by the release of remakes? Thoughts???1 point

So I order a crawler over the phone and got no email or tracking on my package. Should I be worried that I have no info on the set purchase and when its coming.1 point
