I always try and give you guys the lastest scoope on anything I hear, My friend thats gives me this info along with that 2013 wholesale order form told me the SSDS, Tower Bridge, Fire Brigade are retiring. And there is a chance the Haunted House is done also, but not 100% Confirmed yet. "And with the new Summer 2013 Catalog that just came in the mail today, Well that about confirms it. The SSDS,Tower Bridge, and Fire Brigade are not listed. So if you don't have any Tower Bridges & SSDS I would not wait forever, Hopefully Lego will have a SSDS Black Friday Sale cheap, but as me and my son both got a catalog with a 10% Coupon I will be going to the Lego store in a few days and get 2 more Tower Bridges, plus I have 2 20% Coupons to use with it, I am waiting for a sale for more SSDS, and these will be big bucks in a few years, and i have plenty Fire Brigade's. And all you guys that wished you would of gotten alot of the Dubai, Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower's etc sets well don't screw up on the Tower Bridge. A well Known landmark will do very very well. "And about the Haunted House Retiring, well I am buying one or 2 a month, so in case in goes all of a sudden I will have plenty, I also have 13 SSDS, 21 Tower Bridge's, 17 Fire Brigades. "AND THE B-WING IS IN THE SUMMER CATALOG, AND MY FRIEND ALSO SAID THE DEATH STAR IS HEAR FOR ANOTHER YEAR." Still 6 months in the year and anything can change but this is the latest scoop. Hey everyone! I recently rekindled my long lost love for Lego now that I have 3 young kids. Actually, I've gone a little Lego nuts.... It started with the discovery of an old, dusty box of legos, capsela, and construx in my parents garage about 4 months ago. I started going through it, sorting the legos out from the rest with the intention of finding enough for my kids to play with. The more I pulled out, the more I was reminded of the awesomeness that is Lego. Pretty much my whole collection (much smaller than I remember it being) was made up of (I think) the King's Castle (6080), Galaxy Explorer (497), Cosmic Cruiser (6890), Space Supply Station (6930), Starfire I (6820), and some other smaller police/fire/whatever sets. It hard to tell because a lot of pieces seem to be missing, of which I am extremely bummed. I plan to scour my parent's place the next time I'm up there. Anyway, the more I pulled out and sorted, the more was reminded of how great this stuff is. So much so, that I started to get truly and surprisingly mad that I had been missing out on Lego for the last 20 years, or so. So, for the last 4 months I've been playing catch-up; buying more lego than I ever had as a kid (a lot more), of course under the guise that I am buying this stuff "for the kids". During this time I stumbled upon this forum and was introduced to the concept of Lego investing.... say what??? What really interested me was that I now had a viable excuse to my wife for buying Lego.... Realistically I am more of a buy to build with my kids (or just myself) person, but the recent Amazon craziness on the 30th swung me over to the investment side a little bit.... maybe. I may still just open the stuff I bought during that time (Haunted House, Arkham Asylum, Town Hall, and Horizon Express) because it is just begging to be built and played with, but I have to keep up the "investment" appearances for my wife just a little while longer. At least until the recent credit card bill is paid for and out of mind. I think it is safe to say that I've been bit pretty bad by the Lego bug and I'm glad to have found a place like this to share the addiction and not feel so terrible about my continued, blatant disregard for my credit card bill.2 points

I could have bought 3 arkhams for 360 from amazon at that last sale, put them in storage for two years, then made 300 in profit. Or, I could buy 3 helms deeps at clearance for 300, and sell them in january for 240 profit. That's why eol dates are important. If you have the capital to do both, then by all means, please do. I had to choose one or the other. The quicker I make a profit, the sooner I can roll that money into a more expensive, less discounted set. If I buy a tower bridge with my helms deep profits, then i can afford to let it sit for years without worrying about the purchase price eating into my start up capital.2 points

What's the big deal about knowing EOL anyway? Shouldn't many of you already have invested in these sets that are nearing EOL instead of running around like chickens with no heads at the thought of it? As experienced Lego investors, you all know that every set is going to be retired, it's just a matter of whether or not it will appreciate enough to make you a profit. I can see i t now, many of you rushing out to pay $400 for a SSD when it sold for $300 a year ago or a Tower Bridge for $240 when they were available at $180 about the same time period.2 points

Here's some pics of my first MOC my son and other kids enjoy playing with at our home. Not an SW's expert so probably lots of 'errors' haha. Give me an up arrow if you like...and if you didn't like than I'll try to do better next time lol. Would like to do a LOTR/medieval theme next time.2 points

Take a look at the "Sales and Discounts" section - the #1 selling Lego set on Amazon is Minecraft. I am ecstatic that they are coming out with new sets from Minecraft because that is going to continue to drive demand for the original. I am thinking about stocking up on Amazon now...2 points

Thank you once again for the info emazers. All information that has a decent level of accuracy is valuable and any serious Lego investor knows this. EOL dates, Sales info, pricing history, release dates, stock levels, comparative set data, theme data, long term averages, etc etc. All have weight in investment decision making. What an individual investor decides to do with that info will often be different, as it should be, for many reasons. But there is no doubt that increased access to any of that information is a good thing. There is no perfect future investing strategy, but there are many right ones.1 point

not sure if this is an option for you but, maybe offer it as a trade for a set that you really want instead1 point

Thing is, its extremely DIFFICULT to calculate what is mathematically better overall. Say you could buy SSD for 310$ now its 400$. Was it better buying it at May for 310$ and tie 310$ ATLEAST 6 months longer (if not close to a year) or is it better buying it like the month it will EOL for lets say 380$. Noone can calculate 100% correctly how much money you could make with 310$ freed up instead of tied up... the only thing you can calculate is your own gains (either total or per month) if you'd bought it for 310$ So its a personal choice more than anything else. I think when a SET is 30% off you cannot do much wrong buying it ... allthough I wonder hypothetically Lets say LOTR wave 2 launches and its put on 25% off instantly.... would you buy it (like 3 months after released for 25% off) or would you pass the opportunity ?1 point

There is no right or wrong way to invest. While you hold a set for 5 years, someone else might flip sets 2-3 times in the same timeframe and actually have more money as an outcome. I don't think anyone can preach a one-size-fits-all solution. I do think there is a difference though between flipping with intent as part of your strategy to reinvest, vs panic selling with no plan. So I agree some might sell too early in that case.1 point

EOL isn't everything, but it is quite a bit: everyone has limitations (the two biggest being space and money). Buying sets at retail a month before EOL and then selling them during the Christmas buying season will get you a lot more money in the end than buying a newly issued set and then having to sit on it for three years. Even with discounts factored in, you will be able to make money doing the first because you can complete 2 or 3 buying and selling cycles in the same time as it takes to complete 1 in the first scenario.1 point

I think most regular readers on this board would agree that things that emazers posts about EOL's is a little more than just a guess.1 point

Confirming EOL off the catalog is a waste of time. Not to poop on anything emazers said, it is really just common sense that these sets are getting retired. Every Lego set gets retired with the exception of the 10188, so how hard is it to take a guess about retirement dates?1 point

I agree, put it on Craigslist. List it for 140, someone will offer you 120 or 130. Then you're only out 35 bucks or so. Consider your loss as a rental fee to build it. I do this a lot EDIT: just checked amazon, the lowest price on a palace is 215. Be sure to mention that in your listing1 point

It makes sense if someone is getting belligerent and mods want to punish, but I see major issues with disciplining people like this if they are conducting a calm, valid debate or disagreement. I might say I love the Atlantis theme, for example, and my post gets downvoted because many others don't. Should I lose brickpoints for that? Its somewhat of a slippery slope.1 point

I agree, the rare colors make these sets quite valuable, in the friends box, they look like girly colors, but used in the right way, they can add a lot to many other MOC's.1 point

It's funny how this thread has much less action after the new forum launched, as it is no longer on the bottom of every forum page....alas. 3 x uruk hai army for $20 at a Walmart. First ones for my collection, been waiting to find them this low. Funny follow on story - I was in the clearance aisle, and grabbed these three right when another guy was walking into the aisle with purpose. He saw my boxes I think, but didn't say anything. I didn't think anything of it. Fast forward 10 min later - I made one more stop on the way home, along a pretty rural street. Stopped in at a local drug store in the NW that carries Lego. This one in particular I was checking because they randomly have two 7965 Falcons - super weird as this chain generally doesn't carry sets more than $30 in price. Anyway, I was checking out the aisle, and the same guy comes in and goes straight for the Lego. Really funny. They didn't have anything worth buying, but I saw him checking the Falcons as well. So if you're a fellow Brickpicker sir, nice to meet you. Haha.1 point

I'm wagering right now that every quick flipper that sold over the last few months and made less then $10 total profits will one day be kicking themselves in the tuckus...1 point

If true, the original set on sale rght now will almost certainly appreciate to unimagineable heights. I hope you all stocked up.1 point

The review article contest will end July 3rd as planned, so if I was you, I would put a concerted effort into that right now. The blog article contest will end in about 30 days after the new Blog system is up and running so that people can resubmit articles in the new format and get a hang of it...including Jeff and I. I will have a lot of flexibility with this blog contest and it might end later than that. Jeff is going to fix the log in issue and launch the blog feature at the same time. It's all tied together, so we will have a better idea in a week or so as to what to expect with that contest. The whole site is going through some major modifications right now that will enable us to provide members with fresh content, top notch member involvement and usability that is second to none. These new changes should make it easier for everyone to use our site and to have their opinions and thoughts heard and read. Yes, people can win prizes in both contests. I will keep them 1000% separate. We will judge the content separately and impartially. So go for it. I expect a ton of reviews from people in the next month. You have a MONTH. Remember, you also get a ton of Brickpoints from these reviews and can win multiple STAR WARS mini sets for just Brickpoints alone. And as I stated before, just don't give up on the contest because you feel there are some people way ahead. I will give out some quality Honorable mention sets to members who really make an effort.1 point

Besides being in the middle of a HUGE update to the list where I am trying to add international retails for every single 2013 set, Darth Lego brought to my attention that The Brick Fan had posted an article for upcoming polybags. One of which is the BMW set. (Don't get your hopes up; it really is disappointing and a rerelease of an older Racers set!) Anyway, here are the images. Hot Dog Cart Polybag (40078) Christmas Tree Polybag (30186) Lawnmower Polybag (30224) Coast Guard Seaplane Polybag (30225) Fall Scene (40057) Geoffrey the Giraffe Polybag (40077) BMW Polybag (40200) A rerelease of Off-Road Racer 2 (30035)1 point

rcdb1984, I'm saying this as a friend and for your own protection. We don't reply with "+1" posts anymore. If you simply want to "+1" someone, then just click on the green up arrow in the bottom right hand corner of that persons post. A couple of similiar posts were made recently under the new forum system and received a thumbs down for doing so.1 point

The Brickpoints are still being counted. We will address the Brickpoints situation around the same time that the new Blog feature is activated...maybe in a week or two. There will be modifications to the Brickpoints system that work with the new forum and blog feature. Some things will be carried over and re-implemented and others will not. There will be new ways to acquire Brickpoints that are designed around producing content for the site, quality forum posts and helping other members. All in all, there will be many more ways to add Brickpoints to your account.1 point
