MartinP Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 So, what next? The hardest part of any investing. The waiting game. Wait six months till the contest is over to see who wins. From what I read in the rules, when the prices of the sets are updated, they will update who is in the lead for the contest. Quote
nolanfan34 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I'd love some discussion on why people picked certain sets for the specific parameters of this contest. I don't mean discussing whether something is a good value or not long term, but for this specific 6 month timeframe. For example - 6860 Batcave. I love the set as an investment. I didn't pick it during the contest though because it is not clear if it will retire soon, and at $90+ I don't see 6 month value in it. I didn't post my picks in the thread, but my strategy for the purpose of the game was to try to go in a different direction than everyone else (at the time of my submission at least). I decided to go heavy on Lego Architecture - Willis Tower, Rockefeller Center, and Guggenheim. I am banking on these moving to retirement. I didn't pick Robie, even though I like it, because the starting price is already pretty high. But these other sets if they retire I think have a chance of doubling in 6 months at their initial price point. I balanced that with some Mini-Modulars. TabbyBoy's strategy of just about all mini modulars was a pretty good one. This is already up 20%+ from the Dec price, and could also return a doubling in price over 6 months. While I like the Fire Brigade, and it will be fascinating to see how high it goes, I am gambling on this returning a better ROI. To even out the numbers I think I included 1 Batwing Battle over Gotham set. That was my strategy, so in a way I am rooting for a lot of you more than I am rooting for myself!! 1 Quote
Migration Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I just tried to pick sets at or near EOL and try to keep the total # of sets down to minimize the $3 per set penalty. I think I wound up with about ten sets total. Quote
Grolim Posted January 31, 2014 Author Posted January 31, 2014 So, what next? Think I mentioned it before, but I'm putting together some stats on the picks. e.g. Fire Brigade was the most picked set by 16 of the 84 entrants. I'm also going to put the entries into a nicer format and list them all out. Then I'll be providing updates as the price guide is updated. Quote

Jojoyojimbi Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I picked 74 desert skiffs because boba fett is a badass, and any set with a giant gaping maw included is undervalued at $13 and some change so it's got to go up I would have picked nothing but the max number of retail priced marina bay sands or curiosity rovers since they're going to be the two biggest gainers of this period hands down Quote
nolanfan34 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Yeah you've mentioned that a few times. :-p I think if the Desert Skiff retires in the next 6 months, you win easily. If it doesn't, will probably still be close. Quote

But if it gets corrected it will go way up. As for the other two, there is a reason there were stipulations for sets because otherwise we all would have picked limited edition sets that may or may not make it to all of the general public. Popular Post Grolim Posted February 2, 2014 Author Popular Post Posted February 2, 2014 All entries have been posted in full under post #2 Here are some stats from across all 84 entries: 120 different sets were chosen Sets ranged across 26 different themes Most expensive set chosen was $433.35, the 10188 Death Star Least expensive was $5.60, the 30106 Ice Cream Stand 65 of the sets were chosen by only one player alone $84,000 was the total amount to play with across all players There was $1,833.44 cash remaining, including $1,000 from one player alone who wanted to take the cash only. Some more analysis provided these graphs: The Virtual mimicks the real, with Fire Brigade the most picked set. Three players going big on Desert Skiff push it to the top of the quantity list, and one player chose all 119 of the Desk set. Though a better measure than quantity of investment popularity is value invested, here's that: And here's the value by theme: Interesting stuff I'm sure you'll agree. Anything else that anyone wants to know? 11 Quote

odysea11 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Very well organized Grolim! Thanks for all of your hard work! We'll look forward to some updates. My prediction is the bulk of us will loose a fair amount of value right away due to buying in at those historic December prices, and the $1000 cash guy and the Desert Skiffs will take an early lead.
