I was shocked to find out that, after all these years, I still had my somewhat large collection of space lego from 1978-1982.  My wife told me it was in our storage room, and lo and behold, she was right - I had no clue for 12 years!  So I gave it to my son for Christmas, and we've been building the original sets, using online copies of the original instruction manuals.  I'm actually looking to expand the collection, not as an investor, but for constructive play for my children.  As such, I don't really care about condition or whether it comes in the original boxes, etc.  I have noticed that the market values listed on this very organized site are about half of what they are listed on ebay.  If someone here could point me in the direction toward shops where I could get vintage/classic sets for market value, it would be very much appreciated!

Thanks a million!

First off, welcome to Brickpicker!  I collect vintage space sets myself.  And the thing about the price guides for the sets are an average and in some limited cases can be a little inaccurate.  And it can be odd with old sets as people quickly impulse buy from nostalgia and there are always those sellers who list sets way high to try to get the occasional sucker.  If you are patient and diligent it is entirely possible to score vintage sets off ebay at or below the average market value.

There is also bricklink which is like the world's biggest LEGO market.  Bottom line just be patient and look around.

Welcome to the site.

As a seller I try to specialise in Vintage 1979/1980s space. Because that's my era. I am always looking for bulk lots containing early 80s sets. It started to go downhill after 87/88.

At the moment I am trying to complete a 6952 Solar Power Transporter  from 1985 http://brickset.com/detail/?set=6952-1 before listing it on ebay. Currently its missing the top jets (which I have sourced) and I have had to replace the TrRed aerials with black and the green canopies with blue. Also the black wheel hubs have been replaced with grey ones.

To source sets and get an idea of prices, I would keep following eBay and you will soon get an idea of how much these go for. The BP price can sometimes be a but off because there are not enough sales of these older sets, but its a good starting point.

I have kept a record of all the ones I have sold. 928 & 6980 are very profitable if you can get them in bulk lots.

The cheapest way to get vintage space Lego is to buy a bulk lot, say 10kg, that has space Lego in it, difficult to find listings on eBay but they do still turn up. you need to have a keen eye and know what to look for, the moon baseplates are a dead tie away there is space Lego, but you looking for lots were you can see a air amount of blue and grey Lego and the trans-yellow pieces. When space Lego goes up for auction separately sometimes it can reach over

This listing here is a not bad example, but it is easy to see by the amount of moon plates the space Lego that lies within, also you can see instructions for 926 command centre which will fetch

Quick question. Did you think about buying the paper manuals for your classic sets? If so, try bricklink. I did that with 2 of my 4 childhood boxed Castle sets (1984-1986). Yep, my recently deceased grandmother kept them for me and now they are shared with my son :)

Regrading the price guide here. It is excellent and I use it in combo the Bricklink's historic sale info. One thing to note about our price guide, it is derived from eBay "sold" listings. The challenge Jeff and Ed have is that many sets are sold with listing errors (open boxed sets labeled as new and / or sets sold as incomplete). Sets sold without boxes also sometimes throw off the used set prices. So if you have older sets from the 1980s or sets that are popular and usually sold incomplete (7888, Cloud City, etc...), the guide's prices are lower than expected due to some eBay listings, this is why Jeff and Ed encourage their users to notify them if we so huge price differences so they can then tweak the logic,

I am looking forward to doing this with my son in 6 months after we move and have a playroom to fit it all. I have most of the space sets from 1978-1986 including the solar power transporter. Always loved the white astronaut's jetpack.

I'll be honest, I was almost one of those nostalgic suckers a few days ago... but better sense prevailed.  Will check out bricklink, thanks!

Wish I still had my childhood Kenner SW stuff just for the nostalgia value. Good luck with that.

I have nothing but pictures from that joyful 1983 Christmas. Wampa Wampa! Ha ha,
