Dennan Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Hi All, I'm from The Netherlands and just back into the Lego. After my parents dropped off some boxes from my childhood (80's) lego's There are some great sets available these days. Trying to focus on what to collect/build and invest on. Just bought my first set the 10211 Grand Emporium to start with. Looking into the Fire Brigade, but prices went up with Quote
Bernard74 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Welkom Dennan! Well, first of all I don't buy most sets in physical stores but online. Most sets are available online at around 20-30% below price levels in physical stores like intertoys or bart smit. Especially Amazon has a lot of good deals. Brickpicker has info on that on the discounts page. Other good ways to find the best deal are comparison sites like beslist.nl or brickwatch.nl (specifically about Lego). When I am in a store (a-tembo in Delft&Breda is a good one) I usually compare their prices with my smartphone. Not so much with the current value on ebay, since I am more of the buy and wait until retirement, than the buy at discount and try to immediately sell for ebay value strategy. But I compare them to alternative places to buy. About Fire Brigade: opinions on that vary. There are the people that are convinced it will do well because it's a modular, and those that believe that your money is best invested elsewhere. Reasons for that being that it has been in production a very long time, so a lot of people that want it already have it. Plus the fact that a lot of other investors have it. As we all know, prices rise if demand outweighs supply and there are those that think in this case supply may outweigh demand. I myself have two: one for myself which I opened and built and one as an investment. Happy collecting/building/investing! Quote

Can you buy the sets @ all the European Amazon's? Wouldn't the shipping costs kill the price advantage? I know with buying some items (not Lego) thru Amazon you get redirected to the US website and then the shipping is just killing. Quote
Noodlenut Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Welcome to the site! I'd definitely recommend any of the modular sets, and the Grand Emporium is one of the best ones. If you could find that one in a store, than the best option would be to buy it in store. Modular sets are not discounted frequently, and if you have to pay shipping on a huge item like a modular, than that could get a little pricy. The best way to keep track of a set's value is to type the set number in the search bar just below the big "BRICK PICKER" banner. The values are currently a month behind, but at least it will give you an idea of a set's value. Another great site that you will be wanting to check is called brickset.com. I do not know if there is a way to change currency yet, but it is still very helpful. If you are looking for themes to invest in, than the Superheroes sets are some of the best options. LOTR and The Hobbit are also destined for greatness. Modular sets are also great if you are willing to wait for returns. Quote

I have ordered lego sets from Amazon UK, France and Germany without problems. I think Italy and Spain is also possible but they have less discounts and the site is a little bit more difficult to use because of the languages. Shipping isn't really an issue for me. Oftem my order qualifies for free shipping, only thing is it'll take a little longer (5-7 workdays or so). Buying from Amazon US is indeed not usually the best idea. The sets themselves are usually cheaper, but you pay a lot extra for shipping and import duties (if they ship the requested item to Europe at all). Only set I ordered from there so far is 21050 Architecture Studio which wasn't available in Europe. Quote
Bernard74 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Modulars, by the way are not often available on discount on Amazon. Search for those at Dutch retailers, online and physical. Quote
