LOTR fans are young?  LOTR came out 70 years ago, so I would argue that most fans are of the AFOL variety.

I would guess the main reason ToO isn't selling as well as it could is that the reason of the LEGO LOTR lineup isn't that strong.  I'm guessing there would be more ToO sold if the completionist faction was on board with the whole LOTR theme.

I'm assuming legone is referring to movie-only fans.  I'm willing to guess that there are way more people who's only experience with LotR is the movie rather than the book.

Oh god. The horde is going to destroy another aren't they? This set that has only been around a little over a year is going to vanish. So when they retire PS, TH, GE, AA, EEE, SC, TB, T1, R2, HE and now ToO all this year, what is going to be on the shelves this spring? Parisian rest, sandcrawlers and Mini Coopers?

I know you are trying to stay strong and talk your self out of adding some quietly, since you posted adamantly that you would not.  The fear that for the remainder of 2014 LEGO will have no stock to ship, which means once Amazon is gone, slim pickings may overwhelm the strength of your resolute statement.  What to do, What to do??

The expected ship date from Lego shop at home is now Jan 31, 2015.  Can that be right?

Maybe...I'd venture that production runs are already scheduled for the holiday season but the backorder indicates they are planning another run at some point...and it seems that they often put the 'worst case scenario' backorder date and it often gets moved up (or so I've noticed).

That being said, still better to hedge your bets and get the double VIP and promo set than to panic buy at no discount elsewhere.

It's not perfect, but let's look at the Amazon sales rankings (in toys & games) of ToO versus a few other semi-randomly chosen sets.

824:       10220 VW T1 Van

2,595:    10243 Parisian Restaurant

6,494:    10242 Mini Cooper

6,523:    10225 R2D2

7,385:    10937 Arkham Asylum

9,103:    10236 Ewok Village

9,104:    10237 Tower of Orthanc

9,241:    10244 Fairground Mixer

35,722:  10234 Sydney Opera House

That's actually about where I would expect ToO to fall.  I'm surprised 10234 is so low, however.

If your not at your limit its a no brainer to order one IMO

What represent those sells ? Best rank ever reached by each set ? Actual sells ? Total since their launch ?

Thanks.

This list is a great indicator as to which set WILL NOT retire.

I'm not sure you know what "adamantly" or "resolute" means, lol

Well get a retirement rumor going and sick the horde on that 10234 and watch those numbers fly. You know I am starting to agree with Lego. They really need to do something about all these d*** resellers, lol
