Furious_george
Gift cards get the SC down to $368. For an exclusive that's normally $450 that's not too shabby.

brendongl
Hey, new to lego investing and forum but hi guys. Thanks for hinting me onto this sub-forum George, would probably help a lot more. Just curious you guys are talking about big W and the cashback egift card offer correct? What state are you guys in? I just hope we arn't competing for the same stock I somehow got one of the managers to agree to hold 6 sandcrawlers for me, so i can go to that store last. All the other stores i called said no way since they only had like 4-6 max. I've sort of just jumped into it and got $10k worth of the egift cards. Any other things in the catalogue which is a good investment other than the lego? Was considering buying a bunch of star wars themed items since the movie is due end of 2017 and i have 18months with a 0% interest p.a. There seems to be quite a few sandcrawlers for sale on Feebay and not too many sales. That being said with the current selling price in the 530 - 550 range will give a positive return. Over the long term, who knows if this set will get a refresh or make a reappearance in the upcoming films? It has been available in the states for just over 2 years, and can be bought at Lego.com upto 5 at a time, so i'm not convinced this is going to be retired anytime soon. I tend to stay away from the big box Lego sets due to postage cost, and the risk of a lardarse at aussie post sitting on it. But if your in a capital city then selling on gum tree, facebook bss or Feebay pick up only are definite options.
Furious_george
Bloody hell 10 grand? I know that website says Sandcrawlers could be retiring soon, but at best they are just guessing. While this set will probably appreciate AFTER retiring, you don't know for sure when that is and could be stuck with still in production sets and paying interest on a loan. Im just south of Perth. Hope your not haha. 11 minutes ago, whoisbiggles said: There seems to be quite a few sandcrawlers for sale on Feebay and not too many sales. ED-209
I buy on credit all the time. As long as it's paid off in the interest free period. Keep in mind Sandcrawler may still be an sale at retail outlets in 18 months time. It could retire earlier, but who knows? Be prepared to sit on them for several years. The discount Big W are offering is not that big.

Haha...might see you at a local store then. i'll be the one with two trollies and a mate......haha I got them on credit but going to do a balance transfer so 0% interest for 20months. Hoping this retires before the next movie comes out, then bam. I called most of the stores gauging how much SOH they had, average was 5. I have a store holding 6 for me, but im gonna diversify my portfolio and get some other stuff. How much did you get? If you decide u want more and i end up not using it all i'd be happy to sell you some of them for the same cost i got it for (I bought the $500 ones) Which stores were you planning on hitting? I have 6 held for me already at gateways cockburn (dont ask me how i pulled that off i have no idea) but then after that i guess its a race with the other customers. The problem i have with the MF is that is its a remake if im not mistaken, and the original does look a lot better. TBH all these new lego sets don't look as good as the older lego sets I've seen in picture, they are trying to appeal more to kids with too much going on i think. But then again ive been researching this stuff for like a week tops so who am i to say what looks good and doesn't. Have you had any luck finding any currently retired sets at bigW? They actually have around 4-5 on there website still at clearance prices, so im assuming some stores still have SOH somewhere.
Jules_K
Buying on credit and expecting to clear all stock and make a profit on a set that might not even be retired in 18 months is a crazy move (imo). Do your research, it's not a particularly fast moving set (no pun intended). I could think of at least 50 sets off the top of my head I would rather buy for investment, have a read around these forums to make a better judgment of what sets are more likely to retire in 2 weeks (at 30 June) or 6 months time. It's all about buying the right sets at the right time.
brendongl
Its on credit with no interest for 20months though. And i calculated i can sell them all at $500 on feebay and after fees and postage + shipping i will still have a 10% ROI. Plus this will help my ebay store grow. A few points: - Shipping will be around $50 for this set if you're shipping from WA, more if you want it insured. Ebay and Paypal fees from a $500 sale are $62.50. So if you're selling for $500 to break even on this set your buy-in will need to be around the $390 mark. - Only 6 of these have sold on Ebay in the last 3 months, they will not be easy to move quickly. - Read carefully the terms of the credit if you go a single day over the 20 months without having the $10k repaid in full. I'm sorry but 10k at BigW alone in one hit just doesn't seem like the right thing to do for 10%ROI. You need to be thinking 50%ROI to 100%ROI at the bare minimum.

Im only buying one set from this sale and it's not the SC, so fill your boots mate. I think if you get there early you will have no dramas getting all you want. SC was on sale same time last year at Big W and didn't sell out. By SOH is that stock on hand or Sydney opera house? I'm a bit confused. MF is not long out so any retirement is probably a fair way off.

I have a store on ebay so the fee is 2% less (1.9% to be exact). Here is my math at the moment for why i invested $10k on this idea. They are selling at $500 + shipping / postage on ebay. They are atleast selling, once a month is good enough for me. The cheapest listing at the moment is $530 incl. shipping. I calculate my fees on ebay and paypal at 10% with my store subscription (pretty rough figure, 8%+?% for paypal, seems to be around 2% give or take) So even if i sell them all at $530. That is $477 gross after the 10% fees. It is ALREADY $398, plus the 8% gift card value. But the thing is, I'm not going to sell them right away, and even if they the SC doesnt retire soon, the price isn't going to drop by a large margin. Plus im planning on going on a working holiday overseas, or atleast travel for half a year as well. The term for the 0% is 20 months, not going to use the card at all will cut it. Yes im going to the bank tomorrow to nut out all the fine details. Any other possible problems with this scenario? Other than my house catching fire, flooding, theft, the lego bubble bursting, or the technological singularity happen?

Jules_K
You'll probably make some money, but why are you choosing this set and this set alone to put your money into? Why not Pet Shop, Mixer, Tower Bridge, Simpsons House (and many, many others) which are much more likely to retire sooner and hence appreciate quicker? There is a chance it retires at the end of this year in which case it will do fine but there's an equally strong chance it won't retire at the end of this year. Also assuming prices will still be at $530 in 12-18 months time is dangerous, there could be a reoccuring shipment and discount of this set for the next 18 months which puts a ceiling on prices. Anyway you seem pretty set on it so all the best, remember to come back and taunt us in 18 months time. :-)

I will be grabbing whatever else i can which i can which ive done research on. Its just i like the idea that I can i will not lose any money on this investment UNLESS the market price of this unit decreases over time. And the only possible scneario that could happen is if, they reproduce the set??? I will also be grabbing as many ghostbuster firehouse sets 75827, some poe-x wing 75102. And afew more of the smaller star wars sets as well. Was considering ninjago since that seems REALLY popular in Australia (as in when i go into the lego section when there is a sale, all the kids are grabbing them). And the movie is set to release soon so this may spike the value. Problem i find with this is it is highly targeted at young kids, while star wars / ghostbusters / simspons have a much more mature audience who are willing to pay top dollar Unfortunately Big W does not stock much of a range compared to toys'r'us, I don't think they even stock pet shop, or any architecture sets. Also, probably going to grab some Simpsons / star wars collectibles to hold on to as well. Simpsons run is rumoured to hopefully finish soon. I mean its going so downhill they have to pull the plug soon. And last time the star wars movie came out the bb8 robotic toy was OOS for so long at most retailers. 19 minutes ago, Out of the Dark Years said: Now there's a dark horse set with potential I reckon that's due for retirement in the near future. Did the value of the old MF 7965 drop at all with the re-release of 75105? From what I've read / heard, most people say the first one does look nicer. I would answer this myself, but the charts on brickpicker only go back 6 months? Is there like a subscription fee for a larger graph or am i missing something? Out of the Dark Years
No worries As for the 7965 pricing hit after 75105 came out I'm not sure on that, I just keep an eye on the threads here and check ebay every now and then for the sets that I own. All the sets I've listed for certain have been between 50%-100%+ ROI within 20Months of official retirement. Personally I'm not really interested in the selling side of things but I like to know what my collection is worth and there is always great tips on new releases here. I like to do MOC's and buy multiple sets here and there for parts, when they are discounted enough of course.
