I admit I am one on of the less vocal and less overall posters in this community lately, and there is a valid reason for that besides not wanting to engage in political and religious discussions.

On Friday, August 6 of this year I sustained a concussion while attempting to make a catch while playing softball, at least my second concussion.  I have no real recollection of my forehead hitting the ground besides what my teammates told me and the mild neck discomfort/pain I immediately experienced.  This one is different though because I am not getting better.

My diagnosis is post-concussion syndrome since my symptoms have lingered and I am past the traditional bell curve for recovery.

For the past month I feel about the same, no worse or better, and I had an appointment with my concussion specialist this past Tuesday.  I begin treatment on my neck soon and I go back to the concussion specialist in a month.  She did give me medication to take at bedtime to help me sleep and hopefully ease the headaches.   I am not experiencing blinding headaches and that is a blessing.

Here is my best attempt to describe my symptoms and no one can tell me when I will recover yet.

My head fills like when one has a head cold or one’s sinuses are blocked all the time and the headaches are mild, but persistent.

I take short rest breaks throughout the workday (busy periods make my symptoms worse), and I take at last one nap after work.  This is the fatigue part, and I would like to sleep even more.

Occasionally I get lightheaded.

My goal is to be there/functional for my family and friends, and to take walks every day.  Getting back on my mountain bike and playing sports again is not nearly as important and seems inconsequential at this point.

I share my story, not for sympathy, empathy, etc. but for awareness for others.  Physical injuries are hard enough.  Mental/brain injuries may be even harder.  I am not comparing one to other.  We all have all crosses to bear as it were.  I appreciate the many members who have shared their stories too, like ravenb99 and Phil B.

My worst episode was counting and sorting Lego pieces about two weeks ago for the Lego Midi-Scale Millennium Falcon I bought off eBay.  I began feeling very dizzy and nauseous, my wife helped me finished and I was better after lying down for two hours.

I deal(t) with these problems permanently, I feel you.

It started when I wasn't even 2 years old, I frequently fainted randomly in my parents arms, but always gained consciousness within a few seconds.

It never stopped since then, I find myself unconcious at least once every 3-4 months so I gained some experience on how to deal with it before it happens.  It's getting longer too, longest time-out was over 5 minutes. Doctors said it's definitely epilepsy + my very low blood pressure. Often tired even though I get my 8 hours of sleep, it's rare that I'm 100% energetic.

When I feel it starting I instantly lay down, feet up. I lose my balance, my head feels like it's about to go off, my vision turns bright-white or pitch-black until I'm out. I rarely 'catch' myself. If someone is near me I warn them that my lights are going out so they don't suffer a shock, that happened too often. Waking up & realizing the person next to you is completely pale, crying & in a worse state than you are. After waking up you feel weird for 10-15 minutes, like everything is moving inside you, hard to explain. Sometimes I wake up & feel better than before, really strange.

Every so often it all happens too fast & I fall, hit the bed or a table which results in crazy concussions, sometimes my vision was so f'd up after waking up I couldn't tell apart the medic from my friends. The 2 worst surfaces my head hit were a chemistry brick table (8th grade or so) & these smooth white bathroom tiles. Those 2 falls were bad bad, I still remember the pain in the back of my head. My biggest fear is it happening in the ocean or something, I'm swimming a lot. That's it then, no respawn, I doubt someone could get me in time.

You said you get light headed? Sounds like low blood pressure... Just test it every morning for a few weeks & see if it's that, some people go their whole lives without knowing they're suffering from hypotension. If so I recommend avoiding lemons, I find that it lowers it even more. Instead, eat a little more salt (don't overdo it, unhealthy) & drink more water than usual. Cold showers also help, it keeps the blood flowing. If you don't feel like cold showering, just shower your legs. And exercise, ideally don't do heavy deadlifts & stuff like that.

Oh & and don't stand up too fast. I sit on my bed at least 10 minutes before I get up so my body gets used to the change. It happened too often that I just instantly stood up in the morning & involuntarily went back to sleep again - good night.

Unfortunately I don't know about your post concussion syndrome, the effects on me after a concussion only lasted about 2 weeks at the absolute max & besides I haven't had a concussion in years, I learned my lesson trying to stand & wait it out during a faint. Wishing you all the best.

This happened four months ago.

My family has another family that are our good friends. Very close. Our kids have played together since birth. Their daughter, 9 years old, slipped in the shower and hit her head very hard. A severe concussion. She did not remember anything, same as you experienced.

Her symptoms were severe headaches, double vision, dizziness. extreme lethargy and mood shifts. She was pulled from sports/physical activity and even school. They had constant doctors visits and waited. And waited more. Well past the "bell curve" as you've described it. Her parents were extremely scared as things were just not getting better. Two months go by and still she is suffering, but the headaches hard started to subside just a tad bit. Good news, but still, things were not good.

The concussion specialist made a point to tell them that some patients with severe concussions can take much longer to heal. But he emphasized "they will heal." He stated in some cases it can take many months to recover, but they eventually fully recover. While they were skeptical at times they patiently watched and waited.

Beginning in the third month her headaches became less painful and came around less often.  Each day a little better. Her vision started to improve. And by the end of the third month she was back in school and cleared for all physical activity. She is back to a normal 9 year old girl. Her energy and personality returned as if it never happened.

I wrote all this to encourage your recovery. Just because you've passed the "average recovery time" does not mean you will not fully recover. Those people at the extreme edges of the recovery bell curve are there for a reason. They recovered. Just at a different pace.

Well, I came to complain about kidney stones. But forget it. I’m just going to wish the best for both of you. That’s some scary stuff you guys described. Best wishes.

My wife gets them. I'd never wish that pain on my worst enemy. The last one while two months pregnant. In the ER three times in six days. While we sat in ER waiting room the second time she was screaming at the top of her lungs in pain. Begging for help. Took fifteen minutes to get her back while everyone stared upon her in horror.

That bastard finally came out at 4.5mm. Looked like a jagged grain of rice.

Yeah people seem to think kidney stones are these round pebbles but they are these sharp little b*tches.

I’ve had them for 20 years. Once had to get lipotrypsy (like an ultrasound) to deal. Usually the pain will last for a couple of days now. It’s a constant pressure that makes you feel like you’ve got to sit on the toilet. And sometimes a low grade fever. I need to load up on Advil but appetite is completely gone.

On the subject of concussions. Since my son is stepping up his hockey play, I got him the best, newest helmet out there ($$$). Some people (including the wife) were initially aghast at the cost. There are definitely cheaper models out there.

But this is his head, and we’ve know kids that have gotten concussions playing hockey at this level (10U, no checking). I’d rather be safe then sorry.

I'm having nightmares about the episode from Dead Wood where Al passes the kidney stone.

A helmet can be replaced, a head cannot.

I was hit in the head by a baseball two Saturdays ago. No major issues, other than a slight headache for a bit, but wow was I worried when it happened.

Yay LEGO!

I passed my first one a couple years ago, or the Fall before the Pandemic. No fun and I was down for a weekend, since it really didn't get too painful until then. I think it was working it's way down for about a month. It was a little smaller than a grain of rice, but it sucked.

My first kidney stone was back in 2015, it would not pass on it's own, had surgery to break it up and passing the few remaining fragments was awful.  Thank God for the morphine I was given at the emergency room for the writhing pain when it got too bad to tolerate at home.

My diet contains citric acid from Crystal ight lemonade that will hopefully prevent kidney stones from forming.  My doctor recommended it.

I shoulda gotten the Moderna vax instead

https://news.yahoo.com/pfizer-picked-covid-19-vaccine-125332549.html

Moderna has 3x more mRNA dose than Pfizer (Now they tell us)

I appreciate the actual info, and I believe this is inline w/ breakthru cases being most likely Pfizer.
