Mark Twain Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 8.05” of rain over the past 36 hours and another 2.5” in the last three hours alone. Sinkholes everywhere. Flooding on most major streets throughout town and multiple bridges washed out throughout the county. More rain on the way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote

Best case scenario it will fall down to the other side since it is way too heavy with the trunks & branches. Might as well pay someone to remove the whole thing. 28 minutes ago, Mark Twain said: 8.05” of rain over the past 36 hours and another 2.5” in the last three hours alone. Sinkholes everywhere. I would love some rain since my HVAC unit is toast and new one is not going to be installed until tomorrow That happened to me two summers ago. We were really lucky, tho. That particular summer, there were only 4 days were I ran it (that's how I knew it was going out). That was right before the R32 mandatory change in California, too. I chose not to do anything to fix it, putting off the issue until last year. When I started considering replacing the AC last year, it was right as COVID hit in March. So companies had laid people off, and were running specials. I managed to get a great deal (relatively speaking for California, more on that in a sec). At the time, I helped get a couple guys back to work, got it installed with little wait (also because it was spring not summer yet). Overall, everyone was happy. As for the great deal - my cousin-in-law has an HVAC business in Michigan. He died when I told him how much it cost to get an AC installed out here. Triple what he charges in Michigan (but he charges far more for a heater there, than they do out here) 1 Quote
oneknightr Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 Wish we could get some rain here in California. This past winter was one of the driest ever and it's scary. We better start raking up those leaves. Quote

It was so dry here in SoCal last week, that last Friday, we had three separate small brush fires start from the tiniest of sparks, all within an hour of one another, all within 5 minutes of my house/each other. I am definitely concerned. 1 Quote

I still think a fleet of predator drones armed w/ fire retardant "bombs" is our best hope on the West Coast to address wildfires can access entire west coast states, get to a target within 10-20 minutes; eradicate threat 2 Quote
Bricklectic Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 My pathetic amazon storage limit of 10 cubit feet. I can hardly sell anything except in dribs and drabs Quote

Fun times. Quote

A similar-ish incident happened close to around the start of this year I think where a big old tree between my mother's house and the neighbor's fell over from back-to-back rainstorms. It just missed her house not by much and would have smashed through her car and the kitchen otherwise. Worst part of the scenario ended up being fixing a small section of the wooden fencing thankfully. 1 Quote
$20 on joe vs dan Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Drought and backwards thinking by regulators & disproportionate influence by special interest so certain cities in the SF Bay Area have new water mandates: Residential customers are being assigned a water budget of 74 gallons per person per day while politics in the CA central valley continue to allow entire fields to flood irrigate...limiting an entire towns water consumption for a whole summer (outlaw of sprinklers and drip irrigation; no car washing, etc) maybe saves enough water equivalent to a single irrigation day of a single farm. a few years ago UCLA campus (which is mostly flat) was flooded to about 1 foot...(think how much water that is for a campus that is the size of a small city?) because of some outdated pipes/valves and a hydrant rupture. iahawks550 Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 Why are the terms "sell" and "sale" or "resell" and "resale" confusing to people? Facebook marketplace is full of: "Baseball cards for sell" "I'm saleing (not even a real word) this for my parents" "Amazon overstock for resell" 2 Quote

People with English as a second language are probably more accurate with grammar than Americans. These Facebook posts I see are most definitely not second language folks. But, yes on loose and lose. Another silly mistake that makes no sense. Quote

I think "sell" is closer to how some folks pronounce it, like your pellows and melk here in Eliinois. Quote

Colleagues come to me to help phrase and spell-check their communications - I seem to be the only one who can put a proper English sentence together and not confuse their, there, they're, it's, its and the aforementioned loose and lose. 1 2 Quote
iahawks550 Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 I have noticed a decent correlation between scammers on FB marketplace and their ability to use grammar/spell correctly. 1 Quote

Curious how much of this is a generational thing. I would think most 40 and older folks would be embarrassed if they make those kinds of mistake Quote
iahawks550 Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 (edited) Just for fun, I searched FB marketplace "for sell"......hilarity ensued. Stupidity has no geographical boundaries, it appears. Edited June 16, 2021 by iahawks550 Quote

$20 on joe vs dan Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 side note on topic; the preferred pronoun thing is really messing in terms of grammar. I just had to sit thru sexual harassments training for corporate (I work for fortune 500 so we get all of the latest corporate punishments lawyers cook up)...and it's been drawn out to over an hour now because of all the many new ways to offend coworkers. the thing about transgender person preferring to be referred to as "They" for a singular person; grammar-wise is messy...is it a big deal; nope. Also when did the term "Special needs" become offensive? I didn't know the preferred term is "disabled". 1 1 Quote
