A person living in Iowa City, Iowa, a state without a major league team, is blacked out from watching the following teams:

Cubs, Cardinals, Twins, Cubs, White Sox, Brewers

MLB wants to know why their fan base is dying/dwindling. This is part of the reason.

Royals also.  With six MLB teams within a 5 hour radius of Iowa, Iowa will never get the highest level professional team.  The Iowa Cubs (AAA) will be the closest Iowa ever comes.  I'm from Cedar Rapids originally and CR has had a semi-pro baseball team (currently A-low) since the late 1800s.  So it's not like baseball isn't popular.

Las Vegas and southern Nevada is in a similar situation to Iowa.  The only conclusion I can come to is MLB doesn't want any fans in those areas.

Living in the NYC area I gave up trying to watch the Yankees a long time ago.  At this point I barely pay attention to whether they won or lost.

Yeah, the entire "reason" for the blackout rule is to entice fans to attend games instead of just watching them on tv. When that team is 3-5 hours away, it's impractical, and really stupid. So, even if a person living in Iowa wanted to follow a team and watch their games, away from their blackout area, like the Reds, they would still miss a majority of the games against those other teams.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to watch the Reds? <j/k> :)

Ransomware

apparently Colonial paid-off $4.4M..so that's additional funding going into the dark web industry to become even a greater threat.  Basically if it takes them a week or less to "fix" they probably paid the ransomed.

https://www.npr.org/2021/06/03/1002819883/revil-a-notorious-ransomware-gang-was-behind-jbs-cyberattack-the-fbi-says

from a diabolical standpoint: wondering how much a bid for TLG's "sensitive information" would go for.

On a theoretical perspective: are ransomers providing a "public service"...creating the problem they solve under the banner of forcing better cyber security?  One could make the argument that the ransomers research their targets to only ask for an amount that is "affordable" with a monetary intent I guess "they" are "better" than having some lunatic targeting key infrastructure

future Bond or MIA movie plotlines no longer includes bioweapons or nuclear launch code threats...but a gang of Soviet teenagers hacking into key industries and Musk's twitter account to jeopardize world markets

all that said...I don't like them messin w/ the price of my steak

Seriously though, if someone has got a bot that scrapes Elon Musk tweets when they come out, and then buys whatever Stock or Crypto he mentions I would appreciate them sharing the code.

That’s running under the assumption that it was some Russian teenagers and not state sponsored.

But paying the ransom does encourage Russian teenagers (any teenagers) to hack away. There was a local botanical garden that had their Instagram hacked. 17k followers. They wanted something like $1k to return it. The botanical garden refused.

Hackers cut the ransom in half, they still refused. They started a new Instagram.

But that kind of thing applies to you and me and our parents. Lock your crap down, put in 2FA, don’t click links you don’t know....

well isn't everything in Russia state sponsored in some way?

The thinking is that most ransomers were ex-Russian cyber officials...pretty sure the whole ransom industry in Eastern Europe is like buying a starbucks franchise here

Yes, in some sense, it all is state sponsored.  But some of it is pretty high level stuff, coming from the "Cyber Command" of the Russian military.  Iran, North Korea, China, and Israel are all major players in digital warfare.  And, of course, the US is as well.

Yup, blackout rules. And Youtube being pathetic at sports is just salt in the wound...

UGH.  Tell me about it.  My 70 year old parents, who have been Padres full season, season ticket holders since 1983, only get an MLB account for free.  So of course, they get blacked out for home games.  I actually had to walk my parents through buying and setting up a VPN just so they can watch home games!

That has actually changed the last few years.  The main reason for blackout rule now is to protest the regional sports channels.  I live in Alabama and am a Braves and Tigers fan.  I live 120 miles from the Braves Stadium but am blacked-out.  If you are a cable-cutter, every outlet has cut Bally Sports from their lineup.  I spend the big bucks every year for MLB.TV.  Now here's the kicker: Even MLB blacks out their own games on their own channel!!!  This is my 5th and last year for MLB.TV.  No only the blackout rules but their software on AppleTv is buggy as hell and they play the same two commercials every 1/2 inning.  I'm paying for the channel; Why should I have to listen to any commercial?  And yes, I've tried using a VPN and MLB will automatically block you.  I love baseball but M*F* MLB.

Lol at the same two commercials. That is absolutely true. I'm lucky enough to have the MLB players/coaches version of MLB.tv, so there are no blackouts. I will say it works flawlessly on a Firestick.

I did think Direct Tv still had the your local Bally sports channels available?

Didn’t realize how ridiculous it was trying to even watch a MLB game. Maybe professional sports needs a “great boycott”.  I’m glad I don’t give a crap about baseball anymore. Despite living in the St. Louis metro area and being a Cardinals fan growing up (really till Pujols left) I can’t enjoy the game anymore.  Too big of egos, too many injuries, too much money and too much politics has ruined the sport. Really any professional sport.

Yes. Bally Sports is only available on AT&T. Their contracts got cut/non-renewed last year so they are exclusive. Which is really stupid.

As a lifelong Cardinals fan, I was PO that I couldn't get the games over here.  So I just dial into VPN and use my relative's DTV account.  Sure, it's not exactly ethical, but I'd argue what DISH and the others have done to Bally isn't exactly ethical as well.

How are you feeling?

Feel great but apparently am not.  PET scan came back and there is still activity on the lymph nodes on lungs. Have appt with pulmonologist Weds and will schedule bronchoscope to have biopsied.  Oncologist said lymphoma or sarcoidosis.  Stuff got delayed with few docs on summer vacations so been lots of waiting.  Had follow up with infectious disease doc yesterday and he called pulmonologist and he leans sarcoid over the background but needs biopsy.  So hopefully can get scheduled quickly then get answers.  Went back to work this week and drove for first time in 60 days so that was progress.  Had good energy all week.  Absolutely no symptoms of any kind.  Still on keppra just cause of the low immune system and possible reoccurrence of the viral meningitis.

Side note I did have an ACE test for sarcoid while back and passed but can be inaccurate

I’m glad to hear you’re in some state of recovery, and that things are hopefully getting narrowed down. I’ve been encouraged by your return to posting, but continue to send positive vibes your way.
