Are you ever relieved when you get a great deal, so you don't have to open a sealed set?

I recently got a deal where I bought a complete Jabba's Palace and Rancor set for $50.  Sometimes I'm relieved when I get a good deal on loose sets that I want to build.  Knowing that I don't have to open a sealed set that might be a good money maker down the road is a great feeling and I'm not sure why.

Yes! Once upon a time buying someone else's built Lego was something I treated with utter contempt. Now if I can get it cheaper I will and try to keep as many sealed sets as possible. I am also caring less and less about most sets unless they are stunning, and more interested in buying minifigures separately.

I've never bought a used set online before.  I probably should, though.  One day, I'll look in my wallet and wonder where all my money went.

For retired sets with inflated prices, i'll buy used.

For current sets I need a pretty decent discount to make me wanna sort through used parts.

$50 for those two sets definitely qualifies. Nice find!

Nice find! I always look for used sets if I plan on opening it anyways. It is hard opening to build some when you know there is more profit but what the hay. I felt that way recently opening the haunted house to build with my son for halloween, but well worth it.

Bought a used 10198 Tantive IV that I wanted forever and didn't caved in on spending 2 bills on a new sealed one.  The set came with a rare smooth hair Leia.  Glad I held off, I can keep the set for free if I decide to sell the minifigure.

I already have the regular version that came with the Death Star.  I'm still debating as I'm a collector first and a seller second.

Used is the way to go for me for my personal sets. All the sets I buy new I save for investments.

All the time.  The most previous lot I purchased had a Medieval Market Village and Mill Village Raid in amazing shape.  Now I can sell my sealed versions without worrying about missing out on building them from a sealed box.  I love scenarios like the one you have pictured here, saves mucho money and clears a lot of guilt on your conscience opening that sacred sealed box.

I'm probably one of the few who will actually pay a little more if need be for a still sealed retired set. What can I say? It's a guy thing to be the first at breaking that seal. Besides, if someone can get wierd about parts from different sets 'touching' then I can be odd about the initial condition of parts for my personal collection.

Sure.  I prefer the ease of just buying a new set in box at a great deal though.  I'm not a thrill of the hunt buyer anymore.

Funny you should say that, I have the same behaviour. I'd want to build every set I got but I ended up just building those I really wanted to build such as R2-D2, the new x-wing, the VW camper...all the others are safely stashed away

I know one of my most recent cases where I waited too long was the Maersk Train.  I paid $190 for one several months ago.

I do that all the time, ill buy a set i want on discount, then before i open it ill find a sweet deal for a used and and buy that instead and keep the sealed set for resale.

 

Actually probably half of all of my lego sets are used.

as a starting BrickPicker, I am wondering...

 

When you have bought a set you will probably resell later, can you control yourself not to brake the seal and open the box?

Or do you usually build it anyway (and have some fun! ), knowing the set looses some of it's value?

I would personally build the set if I had it around, but if I had more than one particular set, I would build one, and save the others for investing. I always pick the set that has the worst box condition to build.

It completely depends on your self control and your desire to make money.

 

EDIT - Perhaps "desire to make money" should read "desire to maximize your profit".

For now I enjoy collecting them in box.  I don't have ask much time as I'd like to build so the temptation isn't there really.  If I had more time I would probably just use it to buy more, it's not like the ones I already have are going bad.

I often build (or part out) sets where the boxes are damaged and can't be arsed to return. If I really really like the set, I'll build it regardless eg. TB and HH.

I'm primarily a collector and builder first, so I usually wait for a good sale to buy anything, and then I'll buy 2.  One I'll build right away, and the other I'll stash in the closet for later resale.  I will also buy sets from themes I'm not interested in, but are speculated to do well after retirement since this well net me some profit, and I won't be tempted to build it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I have made up this strategy for me:

If I like the set and buy only one; Build it!

If I can afford to buy more than one, I will build only one and keep the second sealed.

I also find buying used lots can help curb the desire to open and build boxed sets.
