Anyone here tried bag building?

You mean where someone actually builds the model while it is still inside the bag? I haven't tried that venture yet although the challenge lures my mind with an oddly fun sense of accomplishment should I partake in such an endeavor. Wow, I got wordy with that last sentence. Yes. It would be where you build a set without opening the bag. There was a Brickset or Eurobricks topic on it, I can't quite remember where though. It only works with the smaller polybags that have all the pieces loose inside though. I haven't tried it, but I might give it a go today.

I have tried that before. It didn't work out for me, so out of frustration I opened the polybag and built the set.

i got a lots of polybags but not sure how many....50-100-150 maybe....I fail to collect every one of them. I have no time for now....

I do pick up a lot of poly bags(e.*** box of 40 urki which W **** Smiths drop). I have a TC-14 and what ever polybags if you spend 25-50 at the lego store. Its just a pain when some(alot) are only available in USA. Plus its really hard not to open them..lol

there is a target about 40 miles from me that is sitting on a boatload of batmobile polybags. I haven't seen them anywhere else in my region, and I do not collect polys or study them much. they are $4/each, which I think is still retail. if they were around $2 or less I probably would have bought them. any thoughts on this? did I possibly pass up a good opportunity?

Those were first a Target exclusive polybag which ended up a couple months later at Walmart for some reason. $3.99 is regular retail for them and I agree closer to $2 would be a good price to snag a bunch of them up. A huge amount of these have been sold on eBay and BrickLink both on average for $5-$6 right now. It could take a while before they fully mature but I have seen a few listings reach around $10 in the past. I know for myself these polybags took some time before completely selling out of the store.

Polybags are, more often than not, some of the most fun things that I build. They are great because displaying them takes up 0 space, I can build them in 10 minutes while watching mind-numbing TV after a long day at work, and the designs are almost always very creative!

There is another great feature about the polybag sets. You can put them next to the larger version on the set. Like the 30242 Republic Frigate next to the 7964 Republic Frigate. I have both and it is fun to seethe size differences between the two.

thanks, orcking. my gut told me to pass on them so I am glad I went with it. one of these days I will upgrade to a smart phone so I will have access to brickpicker when these situations arise far from home.

First class package if it's under 13oz - you'll get free tracking with it. In a bubble envelope with extra padding is how I'd package it.

Polybags, is it worth just buying as many as possible from a range of different themes, or is it worth doing the research first? Sometimes I get a bit, ooo a polybag, i'll have that. This if from an investment point of view. Also is there a 'best time' to sell the polybags or do they go up in value year by year, anyway?

You should do your research first.  I find polybag money is best left to putting towards larger sets.

I have several polybags, I tend to pick them up at the store generally around the checkout lines...I use the rule of thumb, if they look cool I'll buy.  All of mine are in bins, in a couple of years I'll start looking at the value, if they do well then I will look at the option of either moving them or dare I say "opening them" lol

I'm mostly interested in Star Wars sets so really, there haven't been many polybags I've cared about.  I usually only get the ones that Lego gives away with a purchase, like the ARF trooper, while Boba, etc...  Actually I wish they would do more small set SW polybags that are not minis, like that one Stormtrooper mini speeder thing.

I'm not a collector or a serious fan of any theme, but was wondering why people 'over pay' for some polybags when they could get the same minifigure in a set?  I would understand if the minifig was exclusive.  Or if you just want the minifig without the higher cost of buying a set.  I sold a Robin red cycle polybag for $60 cash locally but the buyer could easily get the Fun House for cheaper and get more minfigs!!  I'm not complaining for sure.  The Robin is not unique...so my only guess is that he really likes the bike, is a major fan so has to have it, could re-sell it on ebay but he seemed like he wanted it for himself.

My son really really wants Robin's bike, but I'm still waiting for the polybag to get a wider distribution, or having it show up in a different set.

 

Some folks collect polybags, so they'll pay a premium.  Collecting polybags would be almost as annoying as collecting minifigs.

I`m thinking that I will regret not selling mine now. Maybe I`ll get $50 out of it, but after it gets distributed again, no chance of that. As far as over paying goes, people overpay/buy things they don`t need or want all the time. Just because you or I think it`s crazy doesn`t mean they do. People who are able to get money from them by providing one of these "impulse" items are all the better for it

I used to wonder why people buy anything online at all. Then I sold a bottle of hair gel for 400% markup online and i told myself "whatever. they wanna pay. let them pay" lol...
