Are fruitcakes running rampant on eBay lately? Selling, buying, listing, feedback, etc...

Im not saying this isn't a scam but sellers can easily become jaded by ebay.

Hmmm, just curious Stephen_Rockefeller, what would you do if you sold a $155 Lego set and you were in this situation?  This has nothing to do with being jaded; this is about trying to understand and substantiate this buyer's unbelievable claim.  If this really happened they way they claim, I need to get the facts to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Anyway, I'll let you all know how this turns out.  The buyer filed this "item not described case" on 19 Dec.  Needless to say I haven't heard anything else from them since I responded that day stating that I would not be refunding until they either returned the item (rat feces not required) or provided some documentation of their claim.

Imagine if he sent you back a package with nothing but rat feces :girlwacko:

Fellow Brickpickers, check out this crazy transaction with an eBay buyer.

A customer bought a case of action figures (brand new sealed case, each character individually wrapped) for $155, free shipping. The package was delivered to the customer in Hawaii on Sat Dec 18.  I get a return request stating "Aloha, I just received my item yesterday and we found rat feces all over the inside of the box. It looks like a rat had eaten through the cardboard box and gotten inside there was a hole on the outside it smelled of feces and urine my kids were taken to the hospital and the item was removed from our home. If I could please get an immediate refund so that I may purchase my children a present seeing as this one present that they wanted was taken from our home by the animal control here and the local police. Please respond as soon as possible".

This story is extremely doubtful (for so many reasons) - I definitely smell a rat.

I authorized the return and let them know I was willing to offer a refund once the item was returned. If they were unable to return as already mentioned I needed some documentation from Animal Control, the Police report, or some pics in order to make a case in filing a claim/investigation with the Post Office.

The customer replied back stating "I won't release my daughters medical record. If you call the the Molokai police department they will tell you that they do not release police reports here on island it needs to be done on Maui which is another island. I do not have any pictures as this happened all too fast and my daughters health and safety were more important".

I never asked this customer for medical records. Since they say the package was disposed of and have nothing to return, I simply want to see some evidence they received a rat-infested package. Their story is hard to believe and since they claim they cannot return the package and will not provide any documentation, I told them they will have to wait and see how this case plays out with eBay.  I already called eBay and they stated "No return, no refund".  I'm not sure if this buyer looked at my feedback or history with eBay but I am a top rated seller, have excellent feedback, and know hot to sell online.  Due to my 10 years of selling experience on eBay, I do not give in to scammers.

My guess is that you will win the case but eBay will refund them anyway.

Why do some sellers discriminate against buyers with little or no feedback? I see it alot and its a waste of time putting that in your listings since it's not enforceable. Some sellers need to step off their high horse.

This baffles me. If I imposed that restriction....if that was enforceable or if buyers paid attention and didn't buy because of that...I would have lost ALOT of sales. If other sellers really don't want the sale, I'll take it, but....why?!

The odds of having issues/headaches with a 0 feedback buyer is simply higher. More non-payers, scams, address issues, unfamiliar with feedback (they might leave a 3 star, thinking that's good). Also, being new - they will generally be more antsy about a transaction, finding lots of concerns that don't even exist.

Of course, the impact is minimal (and I wouldn't look to avoid them) - but given a choice, who wouldn't prefer an experienced buyer, with a great track record.

Update to my Elves package, it is finally at the Post Office on the island waiting for coco puffs to pick it up.  Took about 15 days to get there and that package went all over.  I forgot to stick it to the lady by telling her that I also live on an island.

In re: Rats in Hawaii, did you ask them if they contracted hanta virus?  I once drove my hypochondriac co-worker nuts by convincing him he had it after seeing mice/rat feces..

Not a complaint about other eBay members this time, just a tidbit for those who feel uncertain or intimidated at the prospect of pushing eBay CS around a bit when necessary:

I had a seller defect due to shipping time on an item that took like two weeks to arrive... no complaint from buyer, in fact they had left positive feedback and I never thought twice about it. Called eBay CS when I found the defect, though, and had to be transferred three different times, verifying my info and explaining to some degree the issue each time, before I finally got someone who could theoretically help ("escalations" department seems the general go-to when you need more than the typical BS responses).

As he investigated the sale date, date the label was printed, and date first scanned, he started right in on the canned response about verified tracking scans and handling times that amounts to "sorry, tough luck, not going to provide any service to you". I flat out interrupted him and said "Let me point out that I live in Texas, and the first tracking scan for this item was several days after the sale... in San Francisco. The buyer lives in New York.. There's no way you can hold me responsible for a delay due to USPS mis-routing the package." After several seconds of silence, his tone of voice totally changed and he went with "OK, it looks like we are going to be able to remove this defect for you..." along with the in depth explanation of how that process works.

It is often a simple battle of wills... but technique goes a long way, too.

It's just a shame the CS rep probably doesn't have a Texas, San Francisco or New York to relate to...

Today I got a nasty message from someone who I had blocked after he sent a lowball offer on an item for which I did not even have a make an offer option. He ended up creating a new account so he could buy the item from me. He was angry that I blocked him and gloating about getting around the block.

I get multiple, "Will you take a tiny fraction of what is already the best price on ebay for your item?" messages a week. How do you guys deal with these? Thanks for any suggestions.

You should probably report that first guy.

If someone lowballs me then I'll respond with a "Thanks, but this is the best I can do" and offer the list price of the item.  I've never had anyone keep after it where I felt like I needed to block them though.  If they're somewhat serious I'll figure out where they're at and what shipping would be and come down a few bucks if I can.
