river41
title says it all. Starting tomm. nj will be the 10th state that amazon collects sales tax in.

Oc7ufske
We've had to pay for almost 5 years here in NY state. Maybe it will level the field and help keep some B&M stores in your state in business longer, instead of money being vaccuumed out of the local economy. comicblast
My sympathies with the people of New Jersey... I hope Illinois won't any time soon, but it seems unlikely. It almost gets Illinoisians out of the USA investment game with 10% tax!
Fcbarcelona101
Florida is getting it at some point as well. We officially know they will be building some fulfillment centers around here but the date for the start of tax collection has not been determined yet. willy431
Yeah...it really helped in NY. They (state government) are rolling in cash now. Online buying is the future. Physical stores will be cut 25% in 10 years.
ExoBro94
Today is a sad day for us New Jersians. Good thing I'll be back in Boston in two months for college...

ExoBro94
How about New Hampshire? I have some friends there I can ship to.
willy431
New Hampshire has no sales tax. So if they start collecting for NH---the rate is zero anyway. Also--amzn uk and de will not be collecting us state taxes.Let me know when you are in Boston---you can cover north and I'll cover southern ma Wal-Mart's and targets for clearance deals. Save me a lot of time and gas!
DoNotInsertIntoMouth
Its going to happen everywhere as soon as Amazon gets the bill approved. I hate it, but it is better for the overall economy that this happens.

Ed Mack
Soon, every transaction will be taxed in every state. The government needs more money to waste.

willy431
Yep---even ebay. They are working on a bill. It will "create jobs" help the "little guy", and enrichen all the local economies. This bill will help bestbuy, target, and walmart compete fairly againdt amzn and eBay...as they don't have the tax burden...not the burden of employing people for $8 an hour part time work. Ed Mack
Guess we need to start sailing our investment boats to Craigslist! Good luck with that. Craigslist will not work for most people, or at the very least, severely limit sales.

JoshTX
They satrted collecting in Texas about a year ago. I still remember that day, as I placed a "final" non-tax large order of some Christmas and holiday gifts for friends and family, some video games and blu-ray discs for myself as well as some camping gear. Sadly, I wasn't out of my Lego dark ages at that time, otherwise I'd probably own quite a few more retired sets.

sadowsk1
Consider subsidizing the tax by getting the Amazon.com credit card. Net results is 3% savings. 2% at gas stations, restaurants, and pharmacies. 1% on all other purchases. I use this card as my primary. spener90
I read an analysis, take from it what you will, that the best way for online and B&M stores to truly compete, will be to get rid of sales tax entirely. At first I thought it was crazy, but after some thought, it does make sense in many ways. It would create a truly equal playing field, and probably allow B&M stores to possibly expand and hire more employees who would pay income taxes. Might be an interesting concept at least, still a bit unsure as to whether it would be effective or not?
Coneil21
I know it hurts, NJ, but keep that chin up. You'll get through this. As Christie said, you're "stronger than the tax!"
