What Lego set did you buy today?

Recommended Posts

You mean Indy 4. There hasn’t been an Indy movie since 1989.

Yeah that’s a fantastic set. I got a steal of a deal on a used one on eBay a couple years ago. It’s an awesome set.

I’m not sure if you’re baking a joke or if true fanboys don’t count Crystal Skull in 2008?

The Crystal Skull ain't great.  But I liked some of it (the first act is fairly entertaining until Marion shows up.  It starts to fall apart after that.)   It's the last "proper" Indy film that we'll get before Disney soft reboots it with a woman taking over the role.

I hated Indy 4 and I have not watched it since since opening night in 2008. This is coming from somebody that likes Last Jedi.

Those CG monkeys still give me nightmares to this day.

Then the final scene from the Raiders of the Lost Ark should give you the same...

Aliens? In an Indy movie? Hogwash. THAT WOULD NEVER EVER HAPPEN. Indy rode off into the sunset and he and his dad are living out their days peacefully.

The aliens weren’t any less far fetched than Mola Ram ripping a guys heart out with it still beating. The Ark having angels / demons flying out of it. Or a 500 year old knight alive and well guarding the holy grail. They’re all supernatural themes.

I can't decide exactly why I hated Indy 4 so much.

I admit that originally I just didn't like that they went with Aliens, it felt non-Indy.

But then I came to the agreement, that Indy has always been supernatural, and it was silly of me to think, well, immortality, ghosts, heart grabbing, etc is fine, but ALIENS is where I draw the line.

But then, even with that, it didn't FEEL right.

Maybe it was the monkey swinging scene, the fridge with airbags, the lack of a likeable 2nd fiddle (Sallah, Marcus, Dad, etc), the villain feeling a bit cartoonish, or the lack of any sexual tension (face it, Indy movies usually benefit from that), or just not liking Shia. But the fact that there were so many things that I didn't like is probably why I can't put my finger on it.

The only part I could really point to as loving was when Shia tried to pick up the hat and Indy ***** slapped him.

It almost made the movie worth it.

More improbable than the aliens was surviving a nuke in a fridge

So you bought the inflatable raft sequence in Temple of Doom or gondola chase in Last Crusade?  Admit that even the giant boulder and truck chase in Raiders is at least a bit rediculous.

All I’m saying it’s more likely there’s a magic alien temple in South America than a guy getting in a fridge when a nuke hits and getting blown clear of the fallout area and walking away unscathed. He’d at least have a broken clavicle and a nice healthy green glow at night.

So let's vote... From 1 (worst) to 10 (best)...

Raiders: 9

Doom: 10

Crusade: 8

Skulls: 7

Is the vote for quality of the movie or realism?  Bc if it’s quality, you have Skulls way too high and all the others are wrong too. Raiders 10, Crusade 9.5, Doom 7, Skulls 2. And four of Doom’s points are for Short Round alone.

There are two kinds of people. Once say that Doom was the worst movie from the trilogy and the second who say it's the best one... 2 for Skulls is blasphemy... Have a look on IMDB.

The vote is for fun, story, special affects etc. Same as the criteria at IMDB...

I believe Raiders was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. My dad and I dropped my mom and sister off at a theater performance of Annie and we went to Raiders, I was 7. THANK YOU DAD, bullet dodged.  So it holds a special place for me, but I also think it holds up as the best “film” of the three, Crusade is probably more fun and fast paced. But even as a 10 year old Doom was good, but didn’t grab my attention and imagination like a lot of the other 1984-1985 movies like Ghostbusters, Goonies, etc.

I was 34 when I saw Skulls and was just kinda sad when I saw it. I’m pretty easy on movies and that damn fridge scene just made Me sad at how far Indy had fallen.

PS the early 80s was a great time to be a kid from the movies, TV, toys, video games, etc. if you’re my age and haven’ read Ready Player One, or even better yet, listened to the Wil Wheaton-read audio book, you are really missing out. The movie is pretty good, but very different from the book and you should do the book first.

PPS I love that the “what did you buy” thread has devolved into an Indiana Jones critique

I like Doom and Raiders about the same.  I saw Doom four times in the theater as a kid. I was ten so it was the perfect movie to me back then. In my adulthood I think Raiders is a better movie. I find Crusade to be kinda dull. It’s Spielberg’s apology for the dark Doom. But I love that it is dark and not politically correct. Skull is probably the worst of the lot. I don’t like Marion in it. But I don’t really mind the aliens and nuclear fridge stuff. It’s pulpy fun.

I was 8 or 9 when I saw the Doom. So it seems that we are all in similar age.

Another problem in Crusade was the German women in it - Schneider as I can remember.

What I have also missed there was the adventure feeling. In the first two movies IJ was in Asia and Africa, during in the Crusade the whole movie has played in Europe (beside the final). But to be honest - I cannot really remember the places there...

And as last point - Connery - in reality 7 years older than IJ. Yes a great actor - but makes the movie to funny in my eyes...

By the way, the best woman was still Marion in her first appearance - a very nice looking girl at this time.

Crusade definitely has a more modern pacing, with multiple action sequences: the young Indy, boat chase, zeppelin/plane, motorcycle chase, catacombs, tank fight, etc. The girl is probably the best looking, but least interesting, plus the whole Eskimo Brothers thing with his dad is creepy. I like that they go farther into the Germans delving into the occult in this one, which is one of the most realistic things in the series.

Raiders has a more classic pacing, more time to build tension which creates a need for more acting chops, which everyone delivers on. Marion is an ass kicker which is always great. They waxy guy that burns his hand is truly creepy (in the best way)

Doom like I said, has Short Round stealing the show and the lady isn’t that interesting but is pretty funny. They depend a little too much on her freaking out at everything.

That other unrelated movie we start to see just how bad an actor/human Shia Lebouf is, which he solidifies in Transformers 2 & 3.

I rewatched the whole trilogy when they came on Amazon Prime Video last year. Still good stuff.
