Voltron
What's the thinking for HP next year? Q2 21 - Great Hall - Hagrids Hut Q4 21 - Hogwarts Express - Whomping Willow - Knight Bus - Clock Tower (Not as popular?) - Room of requirement - Umbridges encounter

$20 on joe vs dan
What's going to happen to the HP series when all the Hogwarts Castle modulars retire? I know the new Book series are coming out, but honestly...seems to me that all the castle modulars need to stick around to keep the series going HP sets are all about the memorable scenes from the book/Movies...yet they always tie back to Hogwarts...the series (in its current form) should continue for a few more years (I'm guessing). Does the more experienced folks here remember how the prior versions came to a close...did the castle modulars hang around till the end? marcandre
The castles were remade multiple times as the series went on.

I was under the impression HP sets came and went in bunches. Didn't they disappear for a few years and all come back again w/ new look? I am wondering how they "went"...a few sets retiring every year or all at once?
gmpirate
My guess is this will be become another Star Wars series and behave accordingly. There will always be another MF & X-Wing.

Those were pallets high all across Costcos nationwide for $64 and then $49. there is clearly a window for reselling...and hence the question posed above
gmpirate
What I was saying is, I think HP may become a steady theme like Star Wars. It's not going away. They will retire the Great Hall, but like the MF, they will just bring in another. In the past, The HP sets coordinated with the movie releases. And like any theme, some sets lingered longer than others. I believe during the last run, DA was the last to linger on.

Also, there is continuous SW output to keep interests alive and for present/future generations. Harry Potter is pretty much finished. The Fantastic Beasts hasn't been that popular and no new HP is on the near horizon. After a point, the license fee will no longer make sense. There are still HP scenes that could be done but, without new, interesting content, it's a dwindling project. That's just my $.02, I could be wrong. I often have been. Just ask my ex-wife.

Well...The last Harry Potter book and movie came out a decade or more ago. Since then, Universal has invested hundreds of millions of dollars developing entire and growing Harry Potter worlds at its Orlando and California amusement parks, and stage productions have opened in both London and New York. And, the Harry Potter Lego sets continue to sell well enough to justify an entire product line. I'd say that HP is far from being done based on the Universal investment alone.

Just ask my ex-wife.There are 4 more Fantastic Beasts movies planned. The second should be released in 2021 and the third was supposed to start filming already but was delayed due to Covid-19. Those movies will provide plenty of new content. I agree that the Fantastic Beast sets weren't as popular as normal Harry Potter sets, but apparently the movie did well enough for the studio to agree to 4 more movies. Perhaps with the new movies we will get better sets, I mean a suitcase and carriage aren't exactly what I would call Lego trying their hardest. Those sets were underwhelming to say the least. A slight error, movie #2 came out in 2018. #1 was 2016. #3 was supposed to start filming in March 2020. There are supposed to be five total movies. I found a good article about the series here: https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a675773/fantastic-beasts-3-4-5-release-date-cast-plot-news-trailer/

The 400$ Harry Potter castle had a sales rank under 1000. Most of the other smaller sets were 200-600. I can guarantee there is no loss of interest. Most younger children I know have read the entire Harry Potter series multiple times and still love the content. It may die down in popularity in 2-3 years but by then they will have reinvigorated this money machine. Edit: I am terrified of direct remakes, copies and re-releases. The 100$ castle lasted incredibly long through the holidays at insane volume so their have been an unfathomable number of these produced. Thanks, I didn't realize the past versions phased in and out w/ the movie releases. So this current phase could be viewed as being released in parallel w/ Fantastic Beast...sort of. Ogelwoc
If a set is on discount at LEGO high street store, is that a clear indication that it is on b the way out? Asking as I saw one of the HP sets is on sales at my local store whilst stonewars.de has mentioned it’s no longer return end of the year. Hmmmm

That's interesting since it had not been discounted like others before. Generally speaking its does not bean the set is retiring but since this was supposed to anyway . . . I would say however, that when Lego discount a set it is a good indicator of retirement "most" of the time. We could name lots of exceptions . . . Well, given that the 4 Privet Drive set also comes with a Flying Ford Anglia, WW might be seen as "redundant".
Jessekidd13
For you guys that have been around the block (heh), how do the non-EOY retirements typically work? I know COVID makes things potentially screwy, but do the same sort of lists tend to pop up, or are there a lot of surprises/sudden disappearances of sets? Is there another production turnover mid-year, or are there just sort of scattered instances throughout? Jesse
Belac
starwarsxpress asked about coaster purchase: don't forget the brick fan did stoke up some rumors of retirement, I haven't seen too much else yet but keep an eye out for more clues.
