The Only Problem that could extend the Ecto-1 if they decide to extend the License to do the Firehouse or any other set. But the Ecto-1 License should last until the end of the year.

A stupid question, but why until the end of the year? Is it not per anno that licenses are taken?

Didn't the "Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters" idea get rejected in the last round?   I don't see this license being extended just by banking on the firehouse idea.  If anything, I see them moving on to the next license like Goonies, and this one going towards EOL as time marches on.

Why do you think that the license has a deadline? Was it announced somewhere? What if the agreement only states that LEGO has to pay a royalty fee after each sold unit without an expiration date? If LEGO bought the license for this single product, this single set, then nothing implicates that a deadline was set. It is also not in the interest of SONY, since the more toys are sold the better off they are and an indefinite deadline allows flexible respond to demand. Win-win.

This is a good point. There are a lot of assumptions made on these boards with regard to licensing, when in reality there are many ways to structure deals of this nature.

I look at it simply like this - if the delorean is going up in value then surely the GB set will too, unless Lego goes all Death Star on this one and keeps it on the market for 50 years, which I don't see happening.  Many here predicted the Delorean wouldn't do very well, and that was very inaccurate speculation (we all are prone to error :) ).   Realistically, i'd say the Echto-1 is perhaps a top 5 investment set at this point.  Few sets go above 200%, but I think this is one that will.  But this is another one where you sit it in the closet and wait a long time for the sets to be distributed from reseller/investors to collectors.

I don't even think the Delorean has even come close to peaking yet, and surely has just started it's rise, as it's only truly been OOS for less than 2 months.

And to sweeten the pot, I really think they are going to do the Goonies next...  So these idea sets seem to be getting better and better as the years march on.

If the Goonies is next, and there isn't a massive pirate ship, I will be greatly disappointed.

Nah, Lego Ideas has yet to produce a set that is more than 60$. Up until now they were relatively small with a low entry price to maximise the appeal. I think we won't see a massive, 100$+ set coming from there.

It is pure speculation. No it was not anounced. Yes, your theory is plausible.

It's really a tragedy that Lego won't put any of the supersized Lego ideas proposals into production.  The UCS Flying Dutchman model that's on the site now is truly amazing.  It's in the review stage but we all know that's going nowhere.  If I ran Lego, I'd produce one of these mega sets once in awhile, even if it found only a limited audience and lost a little money for the company.  It'd be worth it for the advertising (free media coverage of the sort RI got in droves), and to keep morale up among AFOL's.

I agree with you.  Maybe some Chinese knockoff company can produce these for sale... :pleasantry:

I'd rather buy it from Lego!  But the Flying Dutchman myth is very, very old (dating back to the 18th century according to Wikipedia).  As long as it didn't include a Jack Sparrow character, I think anyone could legally make the set (or something like it; Lego probably owns all Ideas submissions).  It is easily the coolest Ideas submission I've seen on the site.  I hate to see dedicated AFOL's put in months on a project like that, come up with something truly awesome, and then see their creation die of neglect.
