scuttfarkas Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Newcomer here, FWIW... It's funny that someone's taking this viewpoint towards Bionicle....because it is more or less the exact idea that a co-worker of mine (23 years old) said the other day. We were talking LEGO and BIONICLE and he extolled the virtues of it left and right; saying it was THE THING to play with as a kid. When we started talking about reselling them, and I told him that prices weren't great....he thought that the age demographic for that (early mid 20's) weren't AFOL's yet or had children of their own old enough to be interested in them. Sure...this is all anecdotal and from one person....but I can see that point. The target audience for Bionicle is probably not in the collecting game yet....but in a few years; when their children are older and they have a bit more disposable income...they'll probably look to acquire the toys of their childhood. I'm only 19. Which is why I am being very careful. I will not let my sets go for too low. I'd rather sit on them a while longer. As mentioned earlier in this thread, many of the Bionicle sets that exist are not in the greatest condition. Perhaps, in a few years, my "build and display" mentality with my sets will pay off. Only time will tell. But seriously, I'm only 19 and these were the legos of my childhood. So the majority of the Bionicle audience is most definitely not AFOLs yet. Quote
TheOrcKing Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Blackjack isn't the only person around here that likes Bionicle; count me in on being a fan of that theme and Hero Factory. I still have the very first Toa like Kopaku in my collection and think they're pretty cool. I enjoyed reading the comic book series and was a bummer that it ended. Course I enjoy many things that would seem others do not like the recent Alien Conquest. I guess no one got the b-movie sci-fi genre referances such as "Invasion of the Saucermen" and the like in there. As for investments, I'm confused with which ones are turning into stinkers. I'm looking at a good number of the originals being almost 300% above retail. I guess buying something at a retail of about $7 and then to be worth $30 isn't worth it? It may have taken a while to get there so maybe that is why they weren't good investments? It feels more like a dislike for the theme than a numbers game honestly. Quote
stephen_rockefeller Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 You can just chalk it to me being an idiot........for smaller numbers like the bionicle theme, it makes me think the profits are not significant CAGR wise I was completely wrong about the theme. I only looked at a few and those were not good ones to judge the theme on. Like I said I am an idiot sometimes! Quote
kerrmando Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I actually have some sealed bionicle sets that I love. Just for their rarity (me being a collector at heart) So bionicle does have its fan base, and we all owe it this forum and everything else Lego related. Because without Bionicles high sale volume in the early 2000's we would all be fighting over any scraps of Lego still popping up on eBay, would never have seen 10179 or any of our other favorites on this site I for one don't really invest in Bionicle or Hero Factory, I have flipped them with success though. But for my collection I love getting old Bionicles that are sealed. Quote
