Ideas #006: 21108 - Ghostbusters Ecto-1

Recommended Posts

Heard a middle aged guy in the Lego store telling an employee that this was the first Lego set he bought.  He was in the process of buying the new Firehouse.  He said he wouldn't have been in the store if it wasn't for it.   So that Is just one example of someone who isn't into Lego but would be quite interested in Ghostbusters sets.

Now let's take that one step further. He now has a giant Lego set in his house he enjoyed putting it together and there are other LEGO sets that might be interesting. Boom! Gateway drug, we have a new Lego addict. That's why they do sets that are outside the mainstream. Trying to hook new brick addicts.

Well I can attest that it does work.  Started with "I will only get Star Wars sets from the original trilogy" to now having an expansive collection.

And even with the intent to sell!

Hysterical!

I read this a lot on here. 'Hysterical.' What's hysterical? The news of a new Ecto-1 is funny? The misinformation about an Ecto-1 is funny? The release of a new Ecto-1 is causing uncontrolled emotions because those that bought in to the Ideas version are fools? Is this an update on the recurrence of a medical condition?  I'm struggling to determine how this hysteria affects my investment strategy.

I like what you did here. Make it look like you're just taking a picture of Lego display but in reality you've captured the image of one of the prettiest girls I've ever seen in a Lego store!

No wonder this middle aged guy became a lego enthusiast.

I guess I have to visit the legostore more often.

I think that's the LEGO booth at San Diego Comic-Con but I could be mistaken.

Out to 30 days at EU SAH. TLG wouldn´t pull the plug on it now whilst selling so well along with GBHQ, would they?

This will stay for at least a year in my opinion. Would not even be surprised if it was retired together with GBHQ. Latter basically does not have an Ecto1 because there is already a separate set.

At least a year? I just can't see GBHQ being dependant on Ecto-1 sticking around. The way I see it is Ecto-1 goes before the new line of movie sets this summer.

Hey,

I have only one Ecto-1, and I’m hesitating to have other…
It is a great set but with the new movie and the new Lego set of the reboot/sequel I don’t know what to think…
It would be a shame to have only one Ecto-1 in stock if this set do like the DeLorean of Back to the Future after retirement!

Any advice?

I would want more than 1 (I'll only say I have more) but that's me. I don't think we'll see 21103 results from 21108 for long time as it's much more hoarded. I think the remake will go over like a lead balloon so we'll just have to wait it out. If that's not your thing, maybe something else would be for you...

I agree. 21103 BTTF has performed so well, partly because I didn't buy any :jester:.  I say that only partially joking... BTTF was frequently discounted, which gave me (and other amateurs) the impression that it was not well liked, and might not be a good investment. I also didn't like it. I think it is an awful representation of a DeLorean.  I think a lot of investors ignored it, making it far "rarer" in our "stock rooms".

Ecto-1 is a different animal. I love it. It is a great model of "the real thing".  Investors have been stocking up on these for a while now. Seems like last year... anytime you had a coupon or a discount and you didn't know what to buy with it, you could always get another Ecto-1.  Yes, it's a great set, and should do fine in retirement (though a remake would certainly limit it's upside). But it cannot, and will not explode like the 21103.  Impossible.

Which remake are you referring to?

Yes, I may stop focus on this set and I have a bad feeling about the new movie…

Anyway, this is a very pleasant set and it is a must have for his own collection :)

Agreed.

---------

All,

GBHQ is partially dependent on the new Ecto reboot  car coming out.

The Ideas Ecto-1 is really no longer needed (unfort as that might be).  Think about it.  The HQ comes with the original 4 GBs (w/ better print and hair elements) and Slimer so technically, any kid or AFOL with a HQ can just swap the 4 GB reboot ladies with the 4 guys we grew up watching.  the majority of folks prob won't initially care what car is being used as long as it looks somewhat similar (plus the new one is a 1980s retro model for some reason i can't fathom other than the GB 1 film nostalgic value).

the best prob situation for 21108 is if the Ecto 1 retired ASAP limiting it's production run.

Wait for the Ecto reboot set to arrive with the film.  If the film bombs, there prob won't be anymore GB sets (mixed feelings about this myself) and people should flock back to the Ecto-1.  Still very risky investment...low floor yet very high ceiling.

On the flop side, 21108 Ecto reboot demand could remain high if the film succeeds but then we'll likly see more Ecto vehicle sets. higher floor but lower ceiling.

jeez, i feel like i'm giving nfl fantasy football waiver wire player advice with taking about "floors" and ceilings".

update: i'm gonna turn this topic into a blog.  please PM your thoughts on how the Ideas set relates  with the GBHQ and the ETCO reboot  and how they all related - investment wise.  i'll be sure to cite your comments if used in the blog like I did with @trekgate502 in the recent Tumbler Blog,

I don't think so but we will see I guess.

i would bet the farm it does.  Why else would  Paul Feig tweet about it?  He has zero ties to the original GB films but is producing and directoring the new one.

He's been all out marketing his film trying to get more fans on board with it

The BTTF set is what got me back in. It works.

Maybe Paul Feig saw the recently released GB HQ, hence the "sorry, bank account" comment due to the massive $350 price tag.  I'm sure sets based on the new movie are very likely but I think you're jumping the gun a bit here.  Do we have any rumors of these sets other than this very vague tweet?
