I saw no reason for TLG to retire R2D2 and SSD with the new movie on the horizon but they did it

True, but thats another case in my opinion. 21108 is listed in the description of the HQ, if it wasnt I would be have been confident that this thing leaves us soon.

It´s a good point but that didn´t stop Jabba´s Palace retiring before Rancor Pit when they are combinable and advertised as such or the modulars on the back of boxes in street formation.

How much longer till it becomes the longest running CUUSO set?

Situation here in The Netherlands, as shown on the (Dutch) Brickwatch.net site:

What you can take from this picture:

  • Ecto-1 has never been sold (in The Netherlands) below RRP;
  • At the "Niet meer leverbaar" tab a few more reselling webshops similar to SpeelGoed.NL sold the set at a premium price as well;
  • Around May 2015 it was temporarily OoS and there was an immediate increase in demand and a price-hike as well;
  • Another interest-peak happened around November/December for the obvious Christmas shopping and getting it together with the 40138 and 40139 seasonal promo sets.

When this Ideas set finally goes Retired (I expect early 2016, probably just after the next Ideas set (the Labyrinth) becomes available, I expect a nice rise in value over time. :)

I think it could be just Christmas shortages. I reckon they'll want it around for a few months following the Firehouse HQ release, but I'm hoping I'm wrong. In the UK Tesco's cleared their stock out with a discount last week, Asda and Entertainer are now OOS and Smyths have been OOS for some time. Only Toys R Us and Shop at Home out of the major retailers are carrying any stock.

When I read this thread the theory is posted that the ecto won't retire because of the GBHQ. This doesn't make real sence to me. The GBHQ has a very high end-consumer price tag with over 300€. I don't think that anybody who hasn't got an ecto until yet wants the building too. A real Ghostbuster or Lego Fan own the ecto a long time before, I think! So there is no need to keep it longer alive only because of the GBHQ!! Also we can see in Germany, where I am from, on the LEGO Shop at Home site that the set is limited to 2 sets for purchases. On GaleriaKaufhof it is no more available. Till last month you could order 6 sets with every single purchase. So signs are there that the set will be fade away... hopefully... 🏻

On the other hand, the Big Bang Theory set is also limit: 2 and that set is a very bad seller as far as I know. While the newer Wall-E and newest Doctor Who are both at limit: 1.

So the limit: 2 for Ecto-1 doesn't really tell us anything.
