LEGO HULK Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 As Ed Mack stated in his new article about Battle Packs, the 853373 Kingdoms Chess set is a great 'Army builder.' I agree. What do you think about 28 minifigs for less than $50? Quote

Spartikis Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 $1.9 per minifig is fantastic, plus you get a green baseplate, a $4.99 value, and 32 white and 32 black 4x4 plates, at least $5 value there and maybe another couple bucks of pieces from the rooks, so more like a $1.5 per minifig and that includes weapons and armor! StarPod Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Whats your opinion on the lego chess set? im thinking this is the safest investment out there. How many do you own and do you think it will be retired soon? Quote
emes Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I personally love it...I own 4. I'm assuming that it's going to be around for a while, but I doubt you'll see it on the shelves at WalMart. Quote

I own several versions, including the Castle Giant Chess set, which is a work of art. http://www.brickpicker.com/bpms/set.cfm?set=852293-1 Quote
quakerlaker91 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I feel like chess sets are solid, for not only are they a game, but they provide a ton of figures. The Kingdom's Chess Set has 32 figures (or 28 without the rooks) which ends up being about $1.5/figure (or $1.75 however you look at it). If nothing else, it's a great army builder. Also, over the holiday season this set was on backorder on LEGO Shop at Home and its value shot up over that period. It was consistently being sold for $80-$90 with a retail price of $50; perhaps that's a good indicator as to how it will do down the road. 1 Quote
CNH1974 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Noticed this had disappeared off LEGO Shop at Home a few weeks ago. I had hoped to find a few left on the shelf but they had all gone. They told me it had been discontinued as the new Castle theme has replaced Kingdoms. They also said they may be a new chess set replacing this one but I suspect that was pure speculation. Lastly they suggested I try eBay to find! That made me laugh. Forced to buy another 10230 instead. :) Quote
Guest ph4tb0i Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 hmmm, they're still around in Canada so I'm wondering maybe I should go and exchange my VW camper for some of these... Quote
CNH1974 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I would keep the camper AND buy these. But hey could be doing a staggered EOL. 10217 was available for 6 months longer in NA. Quote
Guest ph4tb0i Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 weird. i can find them on S&**** though. Maybe it's the staggered EOL as you said. http://shop.lego.com/en-US/LEGO-Kingdoms-Chess-Set-853373?_requestid=1073956 Quote
willy431 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 SHhhhhhhhHHHHhhhhHhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was grabbing a couple sets a couple weeks ago, and guy at Braintree mall lego told me they weren't ordering anymore at his store, and only selling it online until they are gone. Also mentioned the new castle sets, as reason for stopping the chess set---though not sure how they are related. He might have just thought I looked dumb, and would buy all 4 with a story instead of the 2 I had---he was right! Not sure if true--and don't care---I thought this was a good value, so bought the last 4 he had. Quote
weakside Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 hmmm, they're still around in Canada so I'm wondering maybe I should go and exchange my VW camper for some of these... I picked up 2 Chess sets and 2 VW at that Yorkdale grand opening...good value and deal when you consider the freebies included. Quote
scottjs Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 I was going to grab another Chess set as well this weekend anyways as I really like the set. Whether or not it does well it really doesn't matter to me as you get a good amount of minifigs or army building if need be. Quote
sadowsk1 Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Chess set is classic. I have one for my own collection, maybe worth picking up for resale someday. Quote
rafcon Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Big fan of chess and while this set is more simple looking than the one Ed mentioned he has in the other thread, I just picked up two to add to my slowly growing new collection. Regardless of potential EOL, I'm a fan and look forward to trying one out! Thanks! Quote
beartrapper Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 For the amount of figure you get its a great buy even if you don't have any interest in playing chess. History suggests that Chess games are the one game from Lego that always appreciates well. Quote
kerrmando Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I love this set, just picked up two more this past weekend. Trying to grab a couple a month until it goes eol in the states Quote
CNH1974 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Just looked at amazon.com. $72 plus shipping Plus vat plus custom duties not really worth it.. Can you buy from LEGO Shop at Home from counties other than your own. Anyway thought you were banned from buying lego. Something to do with buying a "real" house ;) Quote
CNH1974 Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Well I am confused. Popped into the lego store today and they had 6 on the shelf. It supposedly went EOL in May. The store confirmed they were out of stock for months, and now it's back for The foreseeable future. Which is odd as its a defunct theme. It's available from LEGO Shop at Home as well. Is it available in other markets? I expect the UK eBay to drop on this set now that its back. Quote
blocktator Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I'm not sure. I have been buying them through LEGO Shop at Home for a couple months now and it was at the Lego Store. Quote
lowillsw Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 There has never been any indication it was EOL in the states. TLG could have stopped producing them back in May and never put up retiring soon on their site. Quote
CNH1974 Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I seem to remember a discussion on here about it, maybe early June. And when I queried it in store in May they said it had been retired because of the new Castle theme. Quote
sadowsk1 Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I would trust what the Lego employee told you. Quote

Which is odd as its a defunct theme. It's available from S@H as well. Who ever said this was EOL? I probably sound like a broken record, but I can't stress this enough - until it's gone at Lego S@H, it's not EOL. This set has been available on S@H for over a year, and still is right now. Even the "retiring soon" label on S@H can be a bit dubious - see recent examples of Orc Forge, and Chima Speedorz sets that both had this designation subsequently removed. Quote
