I saw the movie tonight and was instantly compared to Lord Business by my other half.

The movie is a lot like the sets in a disjointed fashion but the spaceship and the boat looked really neat.

Is the movie more for kids? A friend of mine who is in her 40s said she fell asleep in it.

Where movies like Toy Story Nemo etc can be enjoyed by adults can this one be as well?

Didn`t realize you could extend the wings on the spaceship! That is really cool! I can`t recall anything, but has Lego ever done anything like that feature in the past?

I don't recall any set with a movement like that. It's pretty cool. I do wish it was a little more "classic spacey" in appearance and would separate in a way more similar to the classic sets. Still picking it up though.

In my opinion; the movie is definitely for kids and is written in that manner. I found it boring for stretches and I am unlikely to watch it again. If I paid to see it in 3D, I would be disappointed.

This doesn't measure up to the quality animated features of the last 20 years or the really fun ones. It just exists.

Both kids and adults will disagree on how good it was.  It's all a matter of opinion.

As always it's a matter of opinion, that was a very good review. So if you played with lego when you were a kid and like and know the product you are more likely to enjoy this film. I have a 24 hour flight coming up in a months time, hopefully it will be available on the plane.

Also, I cannot wait for Mark Kermode's review on this, hopefully this week on BBC Radio 5 Live.

My worry about the theme (for investing) isn't how it will do in the short term, but will anybody remember it 2-3 years from now? Will anybody want the sets then?  I definitely think there are some winners in there, but when you have such a large assortment of sets to choose from within the theme, it gets hard to have shortage.  I have some Cloud Cookoo Palaces now since they are about nowhere to be found around here.  It is the only set that is selling out and not on the shelves here at this point.  I can find stacks of the other sets, but this one is the one that is gone usually.

If there is a sequel coming, that will definitely help first run investments when it comes time to sell.

Good point. I remember that How to Train Your Dragon came out about this time 2010. (I remember the commercials during my Olympic Hockey :) When Christmas came around, the toys for this movie were NOWHERE to be found, and stuffed animals were going for about $100 on ebay. They were $35 at the store if you could find them. Maybe we'll see a scenario like that. Likely, LEGO will be able to ramp up production before then if there is a huge rush though.

While nothing excites me about a Lego movie or sets based on the movie, I wouldn't want to miss out on any half price sales.  Die hard Lego fans will like these sets, I agree the appeal may not last long, benny's spaceship would do well, every classic space fan will be removing the kitty and placing it with their collection.  When I used to sell classic space lego, every other buyer was "getting back into their childhood lego",  So this will be popular for the next 10 years.

Benny's spaceship is the $$$$ set of the 2 waves so far, even more than that crazy pirate ship.

I'm salivating thinking about how many young, new LEGO fans there will be if this is a hit.  I'm also thinking about the new AFOLs that might enter the market.  Hopefully more of them will be collectors vs. investors.

I'm mostly excited about the existing themes and not the Movie sets. Most LEGO fans want the licensed, more popular themes.  I think an "awesome" movie can help them rediscover their childhood.

These could be some very exciting times ahead...

People that know I love Lego continually keep telling me 'did you know there is a Lego movie coming out?' which cracks me up.  Still, I think the best benefit for investors is overall growth/desire for Lego.  I think the movie will push people to visit S&**** and see what kind of awesome themes/sets there are, and hopefully become addicted.  Then we take these addicts and feed them secondary market fixes.

If the movie bombs, then the sets go for 70% off when summer is over and we buy them to part out.  If the movie is great, we buy the sets at 50% off and sell them right before Part II comes out.  If the movie is so-so, we do both.

Edit:  I guess I meant the royal 'we'.

The movie's chances look good so far, which is good for the possibilities of nostalgia buying in future, and/or sequel.

My 19 year old, who visits all the cool sites I'm too old to comprehend, tells me the general opinion of her age group is, "OMG, the Lego Movie looks so dumb! I can't wait to see it!"

Here's some early perspective on the movie.

Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Chris McKay pulled off a miracle: They turned what could have been a massive commercial for LEGO toys and turned it into a vast, beautiful science fiction world that channels The Matrix, Time Bandits and whole lot of heart. In our exclusive interview, the directors explain how they pulled it off.

Minor spoilers ahead...

I'm afraid to bite on these sets now, but I am also afraid to be caught napping and have missed the good opportunities once the movie comes out and some of the sets blow up.  :swoon:

Other than the Cloud Cuckoo Palace, has anyone else been noticing shortages in the availability of other sets?

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!...

My kids wake me up every morning lately with that.

I am sure millions more will be doing the same after this weekend.

I am banking on the massive influx of girl power from this movie. I am grabbing all the discounted Friends and Cloud Cuckoo Palace I can. The Disney Princess line will also get a huge boost I bet, but waiting for the prices to drop some before the hoarding begins.

I just hope they do us a favor and drop the DVD for Xmas to rejuvenate the AWESOMENESS!!

....when your'e part of a team.

Put me on the record for saying Metal Beard`s ship will be a big time winner. It looks incredible, even from just the one image that has been circulating. Lego has never done anything like it, a Steampunk/Sci-fi/Pirate mash up ship that actually delivers on the premise. Ships do very well regardless, but something like this will no doubt be a massive hit to collectors and hobbyists especially. That is my guess for the biggest winner, assuming a 2 year retail life from release date. If it`s big enough and Lego for some reasons decides to make it the next live star, it will take more time, but it`s a superbly unique set and will make an excellent display piece for virtually every Lego fan who can afford one. As far as I`m concerned, the "Lego Movie" connection is just a bonus, it`s incredible (did I already say that?  :ahappy: ).

The rest of the sets, ya well, pretty sure most everyone who`s been paying attention has caught on. These are going to be a hit and a planned sequel will help ensure that they do in the future. All of the sets are very different from Lego`s past items. They are fresh (for lack of a better word) and have a very wide appeal. Kudos to the designers one all of them IMHO  Everybody stock up if you can land decent discounts, on any of the sets, you`re not going to be disappointed.

At first I was not enthusiastic about the movie or the sets but it looks like the movie is at least going to do well in the first weekend and since it's a "kid's movie", it should hold up well for several weeks with little competition until late March/ early April when the spring movie season starts. The advertising has been brilliant so far with ads pushing Batman and all the star actors doing the voices.  I still think the sets and mini figs are weird but as pointed out previously, LEGO intentionally made them different so they would stand out. Some of the sets on Amazon are selling out this week with the 20% off like Melting Room, Metal Beard's Duel, and Cloud Cuckoo Palace. I don't know what to do either. The movie could blow up this weekened with $40M+ in ticket sales and all those kids leaving the movie to buy the sets causing stock outages and very good activity on ebay. It depends on how many of these sets LEGO has made and shipped. If this does happen I will have missed the boat since I only have a couple sets right now but 20% is not good enough discount for me.
