41999 - 4x4 Crawler Exclusive Edition

I for one am all for it, and I don't see why anyone else who is sill holding a crawler wouldn't as well. This guy is just accelerating the inevitable. The way I see it, if he gets 19,995 Crawlers, and I have the other 5, then he's done all the work for me and my 5 will all be worth 4 figures minimum!

Go random British guy!

The real question I have is why so many of you sold this set so early? What is the rush to sell an exceptional set like this? This set is a keeper IMO...but what do I know?

Well, technically every set you buy is a keeper right since you don't sell sets? Lol

But I am with you. I have sold several - but they were all ones my friends bought and wanted me to sell for them. I have my two in mint condition stashed away to not be touched for years. (I did get a third that I sold, but just because I needed quick money to pay for another score - which was better than a crawler).

I think a lot of people were just worried that Lego would somehow produce more or something of that nature. I don't see that - but even if they did, I feel like you could still come close to getting your money back, so whats the risk?

It's like Wall Street giving you an allocation on an IPO.  It goes up 100% on the first trade, there will be a lot of weak hand that will take the money and run.

Lego played this right for the resellers.  They throw you a bone like this every once in a while to suck you back in despite imposing limits and banning people.

With all the efforts to slow down resellers you think they decided to make a limited edition set to help us out? Not quite. I think they've done just the opposite, but we'll see.

You think they created it to lure in resellers and then deal them a "crushing blow"? I don't know - I mean it would be bad, but I don't think we are yet to this point with them. Maybe so though.

So you didn't keep any of yours?

Just think of it from the perspective of someone that can only afford a few hundred dollars and was able to flip this set.  It's not just the big timer that benefited from this.  That gives the small timer hope they may have a UCS Falcon in their hands.

I believe this set will be a long term success. However, I think a lot of people picked it up hoping to make a killing this Christmas. I don't think they are going to allow that to happen. I sold all of mine.

I'm not worried about more Crawlers, I'm worried about the next "exclusive" item.  My lego store told me they'd be doing more of these...what if they come out with another limited edition set in 6 months and it's more awesome than the Crawler?  What if they do this four times in the next year and people get "exclusive fatigue?"

Though, my gut tells me that this one being the first will always make it special.  Kindof like the first modulars being worth more than the recent ones.

I haven't sold any of mine yet.

I don't think that would make too much a difference in the price of this set, but it could attract other people - like the guy that made that youtube video - into competing.

still almost doubled our money in 2 weeks, who can complain about that?  It's like going to the casino but you know you are going to win the hand.  Just because you didn't get the royal flush you can't really be upset.

Nobody should complain, but is it smart?  Tell me another set that has the potential to appreciate like this set over the next 2-3 years?  Regardless of whether or not LEGO releases more, it will still be limited.  All of you who flipped it at $400 or less wasted your time IMO considering you all paid more than $199.99 for it when you include taxes.  So most bought this set for $210 or more in the US considering taxes.  So you already made less than double your money, even taking into consideration LEGO VIP points.  Then subtract eBay/Bricklink commissions, possible shipping and packaging costs and your time and you weren't even close to doubling your money.

If you sold it for more than $400, you might have made a solid deal, but many did not.  I don't know of a $200 LEGO set that has this sort of potential for growth or a chance to hit $1000 in the next 5 years.  Let it sit and appreciate.  In three to four years you will thank me...

There is No problem with this UK fellow buying 10,000. the personal info was to make sure he is one and the same.

The object of the post is is Say HE WILL PAY MORE!!! Get It.

Get as much as you can, because this gentleman will be making money off of your Crawlers..  I believe this UK fellow is onto something regardless.  He is calculating this set hitting $1000 or more.  He might be right.

In my opinion, all 20,000 haven't been released yet. Since I believe this without question, it only makes sense to sell what I had, as I think I will be able to restock my supply sometime in November. In that sense, it doesn't make sense to hold on to them at this time because in the short term I will be able to replace what I sold while making a decent, quick gain.

Everything has a ceiling.  I am thinking the ceiling on this is ~600.  I averaged about $170 profit on the 14 I sold.  Still have 2 more that I am holding to see if I can prove myself wrong.  I really doubt someone would pay more than $600 for this.

I also tend to agree that there are more coming--that haven't been released yet.  I was going by license plate numbers--and some are posting well into the 18k numbers now---so I assumed they were all sold.   Did some more thinking and some math---and I don't think more than half have been sold yet.  It's a lot of fuzzy/gray math---filled with guesses and assumptions--so i won't bore folks with details.  I just don't think more than 10k of these were released initially--and expect another wave.

Bought mine for $190 (Discover CB and no tax in my state). Sold for $400 after shipping (no fees). Already on to the next deal. I aim for 100% net profit each year. So after 5 years while this set may sell at $1k I will have already turned my $200 to close to $13k. Started out with $300 5 years ago and already have over $40k in inventory....I did not get there by sitting on sets for 5 years lol.

Funny if Lego issued a recall notice mentioning that some components of the 41999 are unsafe (eg. toxic pigment in the blue pieces?) rendering them illegal to sell on and only offering RRP in the refund.

I sold all mine also and will do the same if I ever get more. I am concerned about the long term value of this set. The vast majority of sales are to a handful of international buyers. I don't think any actual customers care about this set at all to be honest. If they want a set like this they can just buy one that's not limited at the store at any time. If the current international investors stop buying who will keep the market price up? None of us are buying these at the current prices and regular consumers don't care about this set so where does the market appreciation come from? I could easily be wrong and likely over the very long term there might be value in keeping this set given it's limited nature.

I am with you Ed -- I don't see the risk in keeping it (I didn't spend 100K on them though). This guy just bought two from me as well - $490 a piece - was really surprised.

Evidently you and Alcarin have the same sense of "humor". I see it as irony, but I don't think it would be funny for the people who spent money on them. :)

How are you making all that money with it then? I mean, going from 300 to 40K is a CAGR of somewhere around 250%. Maybe you mean you are only holding sets for two years or so, but I don't know how flipping you could ever do something like that. Unless you are selling stuff constantly to add up only making 5-10% off each set.

I was wondering why they were advertized in the Fall 2013 catalogue after they had 'all' sold...
