seems to be some voices calling for a return of this series

The sets both Hobbit and LotR have been on fire...latest Ideas set getting hype is the Map of Middle Earth

There's even a new streaming series set as a Prequel to LotR

I, personally, would love for the series to come back to LEGO since I missed out on them.

I liked the theme. A lot of people did not. The sets were a little overpriced for the time and largely consisted of walls rather than complete structures. Tower of Orthanc being the exception (though I like the Weathertop and Mines of Moria sets). I think the theme might do slightly better today as there are more AFOLs than six years ago. Aside from an Ideas set I don’t see it happening though. I think I remember Lego agreeing to the IP because of The Hobbit movies at the time. Those sets are even worse as far as being somewhat bland.

When I started buying Lego Hobbit was still on the shelvess, I was thinking to myself who's so dumb to plonk that much money on the Lonely Mountain. 5-6 years later I have most of the Lego castle dragons and all the Elves one. All I'm missing is Smaug... If only I could turn back time, I would have bought that set at rrp.

I was really glad Harry Potter came back and gave me a chance to collect the sets and figs. I hope the same will happen with LOTR.

Lonely Mountain has really jumped up in value. I sold my used copy a couple of years ago for a lot less. Oh well. The set itself wasn’t great.

I think every one is in it for Smaug, the last I checked a while back it was 80USD or so. Now it's 150USD cheapest on bricklink. 🙃

The biggest issue I had with the line was that the last run we had hoped for never came and the series lacked for anything decent from Gondor.

The Bag End set is amazing, but the rest of the Hobbit line is lacking.  Great figures, mediocre builds.

Lord of the Rings had some great representations of the locations with keeping the price point in check.  That said, no Balrog, Oliphant, Fell Beast, Minas Turith, Theoden's seat(can't remember the name) etc.  The list goes on of what we didn't get from the series, mainly from Return of the King.

I heard the new show is going to be rated hard R / MA, like GoT.  I doubt there will be LEGO sets associated with that new show

I also read that new show is going to be about Middle Earth, The Second Age.  That would cover the rise of Sauron, founding of Rivendale, and a few other setup people and places for the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.  So a prequel of sorts.  We could see Moria when it was still in its heyday and known as Khazad-dum.
