It's steep but I'm in. Just to collect.  I do woodworking but have little time to do it these days and oak is my favorite wood.  Also the first release of a new line... (sigh)... bite.

Is it really a new line though? With the set #853967, that is like calling the Christmas bauble ornaments, magnets or keychains each their own line.

From what I understand in the article: 

"LEGO Originals is the company’s new line of products that intends to celebrate the legacy and humble beginnings of the LEGO Group."

I guess they show examples of people customizing them.  I won't be doing that.  There's also bundles coming soon.

That will probably be an add on that you can purchase separately at some point down the line... buy a set of green, brown or any other color to customize your minifig as pictured above.

Personally, I find this customization thing confusing.  If I'm going to pay for fine quality oak, then I'm not going to cover it up with paint and a dress and all that nonsense.  If these are truly handcrafted and I'm paying for someone's labor and care to make it look very nice, why would I cover up some or much of what I'm paying for?  I'd like non-painted oak hands instead of the yellow ones and then I'd set this up as a display piece.

Yea the yellow plastic hands seem odd (and a bit unfortunate) - I guess maybe they were too easy to crack, if made of wood.

Any woodworkers out there? I'm not, but it would seem for someone with the knowhow that a wooden LEGO minifig could be created fairly easily (if you know what you are doing).

That's exactly correct....being as fragile as they are, the hands have to be made out of plastic. If they were made from wood, the chance of the hands cracking would be huge. Especially if you live in a drier climate, the thin wood has more of a tendency to crack. 

I agree that the yellow hands look funky...but I'm not sure they had a choice...

My opinion is that if it couldn't be done properly, then maybe they shouldn't have done it at all.

Yep. I'm sure plenty of people will want this - but the goofy yellow hands makes it a pass for this AFOL.

What is happening to Lego, instead of letting their sets become collectible on their own, they are charging sky high amounts to kill the collectible nature of actual sets while remaking everything and keeping sets on the shelf forever, now they are making wooden figs and charging insane money to create a collectible.  Feels like the 90's comic book era.

One of those customized-looking ones appears to have oak hands (middle one with the hole in the torso).  However, they look like prototypes, they don't look like the legs articulate (it looks like they simply used a router to make a line down the center to show separation between the legs.

The official images of the boxed one appear to have articulating legs and you can see a true gap between the legs.  Maybe I'll buy one to gather measurements and make some jigs to craft my own for friends and family.  Oak isn't cheap.  Panels and boards are expensive enough (for tables and shelfs, etc.) and once you begin to increase thickness of the wood (i.e. for the torso, the head) the prices really begin to rise.

Perhaps they are testing the market to see if there is potential for a whole line like this. 

My first question was, how big is this thing?  Is the hand really the size of a 2x2 brick or does it come with micro-bricks and will that be a new thing for LEGO?

NOTE: LEGO has images on their website.  This wooden "minifigure" is huge. https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/lego-wooden-minifigure-853967   "Measures over 7” (20cm) tall, 4” (11cm) wide and 3” (8cm) deep."  Looks like the wooden figure can hold a regular minifigure in its hand.

$120 US for the wooden figure is nuts.

Series 19 minifigure = $4

Am I missing something? Even the sale price of this bundle is $50 more than what the individual pieces cost.
