10227 - UCS B-Wing Starfighter

According to me this is an interesting set with remarks

1/ in 12 months there will be scarcity @ resellers

2/ the European market is less saturated as we didn't get that riduculous US discount deal.

3/ the set will have a hard time breaking the 200E mark as there's stock left at the B&M retailers still

4/ The built is fragile and not easy to showcase. Removing dust = risk of breaking. No playability.

So I agree that 2015 should be the year it's time to start selling some and 2014 (between now -> Nov) the time to buy if you haven't invested enough, but with moderation.

good luck

We will jump with joy about this set in another 2 years or drain our sorrows together.

A-lot is riding for many on this underrated set.

Honestly I think this one is already a winner if you bought in at the $99 blowout price and got the Hoth Han and Chima pack for free with it.  I think my net cost for these was $85 each after selling those extras on ebay as soon as they came out.  Considering this was purchased just a little over a year ago and it's doubled my investment (after fees & shipping), I'll take that all day long.  I don't know how much this set will grow beyond MSRP, but I'm sure holding out until closer to the new Star Wars movie is a pretty safe bet.  That will probably be when I unload my five.

Regarding 4, I don't think the build is that fragile, the only thing that has a tendency of breaking on mine is the back part of the cockpit, and adding a technic axle solved this issue.  UCS sets never have any playability and people expect them to be large.  These issues won't have an affect on the price of this set.

So the June to May BP value has appreciated on this set 41.09%.  Not bad for 11 months.  Down side is that CAGR on all of the other UCS is measured from RRP, which in the US was 199.95.  So in 7 months since retirement if measuring from RRP like the other UCS sets the ROR is 1.76%.  This simple observation makes me feel really good about LEGO price fixing the exclusives.  The fact that the B-Wing is a UCS and has such a poor cagr over RRP is an important observation that blind UCS or exclusive investing is not necessarily a sure thing.  If by this time next year this set is not producing a CAGR from retail of at least half the other UCS sets I will sell my two.

Not if you bought them at the firesale (in for 11 at $99)

true. i just wouldn't include the $99 buy-in whether 10227 is a success or not.  we should use the $199.99 msrp.

If i remember correctly the only reason why they dropped the price (aside from may 4th promo excuse) is that it hardly sold as it was initially overpriced. I hope most here purchased these at the right time :)  However, i know where you're coming from regarding the CAGR.

regarding the reason it wasnt selling until and after the $99 sale.  there were a few reasons...

- not the most popular ship. it was also only in 1 movie.  at least the y-wing was in ANH and ROTJ and the A-Wing has notoriety of crashing into Vader's "10221" which then crashed into the Death Star Take 2.

- the larger elements used in the set (compared to the element count) caused the high retail price.  part of the same problem w/ the 10226 sopwith camel set.  actually, 10179 was complkained about all the time for it's high price.

- no minifigs. granted many UCS sets don't have any but it would have helped.

Right, UCS sets are not for play, but display.

The Y-wing was also in ESB, towards the end.

Couldn't agree more.

Actually Built one of mine recently, and wow it is so much bigger/longer than i thought. Quite impressive outside of the box.

At first i was reluctant to build it, but now i am sure glad i popped one open! such a nice set.

Now where to put it....

Mine fell over and broke pretty quickly. Its structure reminded me of general grievous >.< Nonetheless it is still a money maker

...same could be said for 10175 Vader's Tie and even 10179 to an extent.   Most UCS sets are pretty fragile due to size and detailing:(

10227 prob just needs a better stand.
