From everything Ive heard from my sources the set should come in at $799 US.......... Honestly cant imagine it costing anymore than that if they want it to be within reach of most people.

While I understand what goes into the cost of creating an IP protected Lego set.... $799 is out of reach for "most people" when it comes to a box of plastic bricks. The only people buying this set will be collectors with disposable income. Little Timmy from a working class family isn't going to have this under the tree. It will though, in my opinion, drive up the sales of 75105. Parents will be more willing to compromise when Timmy asks for this bohemoth, and the other set can be found more than $650 cheaper.

I think people with available credit will still buy this set.

I still think $800 is a pretty steep price, but considering the new DS is $500 and isnt half as interesting or built anywhere near as well as this MF will be it seems somewhat reasonable. I do think little Timmy will be very content with 75105 or any number of more reasonably priced sets. Even as a collector once you start to cross the $1000 mark you have to think twice about it. I know for me even with SS stuff my limit is around $500............not that some of the pricier pieces Id love to have just cant justify it.

Probably closer to $975 unless you sell it locally. Im just guessing, but if they sell out quickly and are scarce for Xmas this set should be selling for around $1200-1400 on ebay.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got some info today on the Falcon and it looks like it's a complete remake similar to the Death Star remake. Practically identical with some colour changes to rare parts with new radar dish and minifigures. Retail will be $799. Hope everyone has offloaded all of their spare inventory.

Do the cheese slopes add a much needed play factor?

Gotta know something though

Is there an extra cheese slope?

Something has to be different if this price is correct.  10179 was just short of 5200 pieces.  Even at today's prices, and considering the Star Wars theme, that can't be more $650.  $700 absolute max.  So where does the extra $100 come from?  Is that a tax just to thank Lego for re-releasing 10179 and saving lots of people thousands of dollars?  Or is the argument that they've packed more, smaller pieces into essentially the same model, and in so doing run the piece count up to 6000 and the price to $800?

If this model is largely unchanged from 10179, I really don't see it selling well at $800.  I'll hold out hope a little longer that we're going to get something that is a significant improvement from the original.  Unfortunately, the last time I held out hope that a Lego rumor like this wasn't true, we ended up with a WTS re-release.

Didn't get any info on mini figures so possibly more mini figures, for example adding in figures from new trilogy. Throw in another six minifigures and there's easily the justification for another $100. There will be new building techniques that they will have applied ( a la cheese slopes!) which will boost the piece count without changing the fundamental aesthetics of the model

here's where the extra money goes (when compares to 10179's MSRP)

  • inflation
  • licensing fee to Disney / LucasFilm.  i'm sure it increases regularly.
  • additional bricks, minifigs, stickers, printed elements, etc...
  • projected extra money the Lego suits know they can charge since many SW fans are fanatics.  Only problem is ANY $800 MSRP Lego set will sit on retail shelves and warehouses after the initial demand is fulfilled.  It's too much money even w/ nice discounts.
