It feels like LEGO has a Low Initial Rate Production for rollout that maybe they are using to gauge their full-rate production needs.  Even still, I"m not sure that they're even able to overproduce this one even if they wanted to, given that a factory has only so much capacity and production rate.  I think it will go out of stock online very shortly after it goes live, and will sell out in stores on day 1.  I don't dismiss the public's ability to panic and drive the price of this up to the ranges that you're talking about.  Personally, I think it's stupid, but I'm counting on stupid to help pay my bills. Being D2C, if SAH has it unavailable for backorder and the only supply becomes what those of us close to brand stores can acquire,  this should have a QF window up to Christmas.

I only said that it was sad - The 10179 has represented something special, and to many, it may very soon represent little more than a foolish wasted investment.

I think that after 10 years as an investment it was the best lego had to offer , and to think that it was going to last forever was foolish and greedy...

Most of us in the lego game , ( the ones still holding 10179 NISB) knew this was happening with plenty of time , if they still have it , is because they choose to lose on their investment....

I choose to ride this second wave than complain that the first one is over ....

There doesn't seem to be many users left around voicing concerns over LEGO doing such damage to it's own collectibility - but these continuing events are just sad, sad, sad.

How is LEGO damaging its own collectability? Do reprints of classic comic books hurt the collectability of the originals? Do new versions of a Darth Vader figure hurt the collectability of the original? No. They're just as rare as they were before.

What hurts the collectability of LEGO are people hoarding massive quantities of sets in anticipation of their "collectability." They're never truly rare hence not as collectable. When investors panic about new versions of sets and try to sell off their old ones, values plummet because supply is high and their true lack of collectability has been exposed a.k.a. the bubble bursts.

I understand the draw of buying LEGO sets as investments (I bought a few as just-in-cases that I wouldn't mind putting together and putting on display if they end up with no value), but don't blame LEGO for what you've done to the secondhand market.

I don't have any 10179 left, and correct - it didn't need to be an issue for the 10179 investors (since yes, they could have sold).

But the buyers of the post eol 10179's are going to learn their lesson - and they won't be making that same mistake again (on any other sets).

Maybe not the same buyers, but the new ones 10 years from now, probably will......

For anyone thinking about quick flipping this set, even beyond the challenge of achieving a price above sales tax, shipping cost,  insurance,  packing material,  giant sturdy shipping box,  fees,  risk of damage inherent with such a heavy item, etc,  please know you will be the target of scammers more than any Lego set ever.

Scammers don't waste time on my small sets.  They hit buy it now on my biggest sets.

They will snap these up at your highest buy it now,  and they will do so with highjacked accounts that look legit.  You'll think you've scored,  and you'll ship it out quick,  only to get an automated notice that this was a fraudulent purchase.  They might freeze the funds,  they might just refunds the buyer,  even if you both get your money back,  we all pay more in fees and you've just aided a criminal.

The money they make off this crime may go to pay the rent or feed their baby,  or maybe it goes to drugs,  terrorism,  and human trafficking.

Overdramatic?  Maybe.

I'll I'm saying is,  just wait till I post that I've sourced my copy,  then go crazy you QFLL's

?

This Christmas...wait till you see some buyers pay $1200.00 for a set that sold for $800.00  a few weeks earlier.   This set will be a flipper's dream.  Long term...who the Hell knows?

You have to risk it for the biscuit.  There is risk in all en-devours, the acceptable level of risk is up to the individual.

As far as LEGO re-releasing classics I am not too worried about it.   We have had hints of this for months now. Also if you look at the car world they have been doing this for decades.  Releasing and improving classics.  Sometimes to great reception (New Dodge Challenger) and sometimes to lackluster discontent (New Ford GT).  Nothing new here,  I think it just comes to how great the redesign is.  And LEGO is not going to add cheese wedges and call it good to their party piece.

Meh. We've come to expect it from you. The real surprise would have been turning down the challenge. :P

I sit out a few.  DS for one.  Ninjago City will be 2.  Mainly cause it was at sdcc and the early VIP will cut it to close.

This set will be available for a long time. No need to worry about it selling out. So many factors....box size, price, storage, early access for VIPs. It'll be around for a long long time. Anyone who pays more than retail for it well...god bless your heart.

You were at SDCC? Should have met me for lunch.

I did not go.  Had a few friends there and was keeping up with it.  Only been to Cali once.  First eBay live they flew out the powersellers and gave hotel.  Was only like 1000 or so that year.  Next year was like 10k and never free again.  All I did was explore the coast.

There will be more than you think...unless of course LEGO changes their typical "new set release shortage scenario."

Although the Saturn V won't be around as long, people have been snapping it up for more than retail despite it not making a lot of fiscal sense. Sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants. There are many, many Star Wars fans out there that will probably view $1200-$1500 as a bargain compared to the $3500-$5000 selling price of the original. If this set isn't widely available, it's officially  on.

Of course if it's not widely available however, I don't see that being the case. Saturn V is a different story. About 7 times less expensive. Not many people have 800 plus dollars to spend on a Lego set yet alone multiples of an 800 dollar plus set. Plus like I mentioned factor in the size of that box and where to store it plus all the other amazing Lego sets being released in September, ninjas city, ideas fishing store, etc. And if it is the early access vip set then I don't see any shortage of anyone that really wants one at retail for their opportunity to get it. The old fishing store is gonna be harder to come by than this awesome new falcon. Either way collector, seller, buyer, builder, Lego lovers, September is gonna be an expensive month to say the least.

Just curious but has any set that has been available for vip early access ever sold out and then not been available again on the actual release date?
